Evangelion 3.33 You (Cannot) Have It

Funimation's latest statement on Evangelion 3.33: "It should be out later this year."

This from the latest ANNCast.

Read between the line(s) and it's still nothing new: the release date is still TBD.

Kind of hilarious, but at this stage that's better than nothing I suppose - was actually starting to think we wouldn't get it at all.

The ball's in Manga's court to see how quickly they can get it out in the UK following the U.S. release as imagine if it's not the same date it'll totally canabalise sales

Agreed, if Manga decide to mess around and decide to release it a couple months after the US release, then many potential sales will be lost.

Wow. Appalling.

This is something I'm interested in a bit more at the moment as I'm in the middle of rewatching the original show for only the second time. Trivia fact: I hated it at first, but second time around, I'm thinking 'aaww yeah, now I geddit.' So much so that I actually just ordered the first two rebuild movies on BD.

Actually finding myself looking forward to new Evangelion material is a state of affairs I never could have anticipated. And seeing this kind of news? Late 2015, early 2016?

Oh well... plenty of time to save up for it, I suppose!

I'm amazed it's taking so long. So glad I saw it in Japan but those who have been waiting have tremendous patience. It would at least be good to get some screenings going here again for the subtitled version by now, surely?

So at least a year before there is any real hope of a UK release (and that's being optimistic). And probably another five years after that for the fourth film. I give up.

I'm actually really glad I went to that anime all-nighter now. At first I thought it was a waste of money as I had already seen 3 out of the 5 movies that were being shown, but I'm very glad I went now lol

I'd personally hope for the 'late 2015' option, myself.

But the situation is nuts. It's absolutely nuts. I mean, why allow so long for a Western release of a movie that some people are already saying is the weakest of the bunch so far? Why allow the waiting audience for this that much time to obtain it by other means? Basically, why allow so much opportunity for anticipation in the physical release market to cool off?

For me, personally, it took everything that made 2.22 fun and just swept it aside for the sake of raising the stakes or maybe as an obscene gesture towards the fans who had invested in the series til this point.

Wasn't Anno rather critical about the success of Eva, especially the way Rei was received by the public? I feel like that's the only way to explain Eva 3.33 was if it was intended as a slight towards the fans.
You've got me seriously hyped for 3.33 now.

Well, it's not as if people are going to stop caring for Eva. I mean, just look how long it's been since the original series was released. I suppose, had I not seen the film, I might be a little more upset but having seen it, I'm sort of upset that I had seen it. For me, personally, it took everything that made 2.22 fun and just swept it aside for the sake of raising the stakes or maybe as an obscene gesture towards the fans who had invested in the series til this point.

I feel like that's the only way to explain Eva 3.33 was if it was intended as a slight towards the fans. If I remember rightly from 2013, I'm pretty sure the entirety of the plot could have been averted if someone had just explained the situation to Shinji rather than treating him like an invalid.
Pretty much, everyone on Not Nerv treated him with equal amounts of Scorn for doing what Misato gave him EXPRESS PERMISSION to do in 2, ie: Save Rei even if it meant screwing the world sideways and indifference to the point where the only option was to go with Nerv and basically finish what he started in 2

I enjoyed 3.33 a lot more the second time I watched it - as with a lot of Eva, if you de-attach yourself from a lot of the lore and enjoy it purely on a visual level, nobody does it like Eva. I'd argue that the opening five minutes alone are worth the price of admission.

But then, all those deeper aspects are there for when you choose to dig into them - and boy does 3.33 need a lot of unpacking.

I just took a little time to read this whole topic back. Just like the subject matter, I can't believe its been nearly a year since I started this, or that the thread is still alive. I still have a little gap reserved on my shelf for this thing, when it does show its face.. I'd missed out on the little snippet of info regarding a late 2015/early2016 release.. I shall treat that little morsel with the contempt it encourages, but with a hopeful eye. I do know that the longer this drags on the more anti-climactic it will be, even though I've largely avoided reading or accidentally encountering any spoilers beyond the odd basic story hook line - since when hasn't this story thus far revolved largely around Shinji? Maybe they've given up on a separate release and will just tip it out with 4.44? That may certainly be a real continuity possibility, given how close we are to 4.44, even if it makes little business sense. I've never known a delay like this, for any movie, ever. Even the gap between "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back" wasn't this long, and that was back in the days when three years felt like thirty! Fingers crossed and ever hopeful..
