Evangelion 3.33 You (Cannot) Have It

I was listening to the ANN podcast a few month's back and they were guessing that it might be out before the end of the year, but tbh, with the lack of news we've had, it's seemingly increasingly unlikely now - unless it suddenly has a super-fast turnaround for a late Q4 release.

I think the thing that bothers me more is *when* it does finally get a release, how much of a lag the UK edition will be behind the US one, as having been made to wait so long already, it's going to absolutely cannibalise UK sales if the gap is significant.

All i know is it's sat in the pile of licensed discs in the listings in this site, but not moving.. It wouldn't surprise me if they did something completely out of left field and just released parts one through four in a box set at some point down the line!

At this point we should toss a coin - it's even money that 3.33 sees the light of day in the west before 4.0 comes out in Japan!

So frustrating.....

I really don't think it will. i agree its VERY frustrating. It wouldn't be so bad if someone would just say something.. a press release to explain anything. It cant be that hard surely!?

If 3.33 hasn't come out by the time that 4.0 is out in Japan then I'll be picking up a foreign disc and remuxing in an English sub track. Can't wait forever. :(

The final movie will slip into 2016 IMO. They've already cited the possibility due to Anno's Godzilla commitments T the back end of the year.

That being said, you're both right, I doubt we'll even see it in 2016 at this point.

Everything I've heard, very much makes it look like Japan was overly fussy but FUNi is mostly at fault. They probably aren't saying much, because they don't want the blame...

I have to admit i havent been looking for a while, but something like that would light up the UK anime scene anyway, so i cant think there has been anything. As for whose fault it is I dont think that matters now. All I think we really care about is getting the damned thing released.

You don't even have to do that; there are (legit) overseas editions with English subs already. It's the dub holding up the US (and everyone else who depends on the US).

If I hadn't picked up the JP BD long ago I'd definitely have defected to one of the Asian releases with subs by now. I sort of want the US disc for use on my non-kanji-reading friends but this wait has been absolutely killer.

Do you know what versions of the film have subs? I'd be quite interested in importing a copy for now then buying a UK or US release later for the dub.
It's the Hong Kong release which is subtitled. I think it was going pretty cheap on playasia (£18?).
It's also apparently just the JP BD with the short film removed and Engsub added.

Cheers Rui, I'd forgotten the HK version. Did anywhere else release an English-friendly version? Last time I had a look for the HK release it was.....costly!

I'm looking at all the blu ray releases listed on bluray.com and the HK version is the only one that has English subs. Looking at these made me realise how many countries that 3.33 is out in already; Japan, Hong Kong, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Korea. At least some people somewhere can watch it ;_;

It looks as though it's going out of print (a common issue for Asian releases in general!) but Play-Asia still seem to think they can get hold of copies and the publisher is still listing it in their (HK-only) store so I'd give Play-Asia a try http://www.play-asia.com/evangelion-3-33/13/707fer

As IL says, it seems that for this particular movie, the HK release is the best one to go for if you're an English speaker.

How is it!? Is it a good version, DVD-wise? I may be tempted myself..

I assume you're referring to the HK Region A version?

I hear it's a pretty good release with decent subtitles and good audio/video quality. Only downside is that it's Region A only.
