Evangelion 3.33 You (Cannot) Have It

I certainly was Normanic.. Overall buying a multi region DVD player has served me well over the years, and probably no more so than with this unwieldy beast of a film.. Come pay day I do believe one of these may have my name on it..
 
I know that much. I looked into it a bit and as far as I can tell you'd have to actually rip the disc and add in the subtitles to the actual file, you can't just overlay them whilst play the disc, right? If so, that's a bit of a pain.
 
Depends on the software you're using. I don't know, but I think if you used something like AnyDVD HD or DVDFab's Passkey to remove DRM and then played back the files using VLC or MPC-HD you probably could.
 
I just convert to MKV, add in the sub track and then remux it.

It's a pain in the ar*e that your standard TVs can't accept a .srt file from a USB or something.
 
I know it's an LE and everything but at that point I think I'd rather just buy the HK copy with English subtitles already on. I know it's probably going to sound really odd and/or ****** but if I don't actually use the disc and just ripped a file to my PC I feel like I wouldn't be gaining anything over just torrenting it. I already have a version of the film on my hard drive of the BR release with English subs (Although I haven't yet watched it) so at that point I'd feel like I was paying £17 for a box. I know it's kind of weird but I feel exactly the same with most digital downloads too.
 
As Lavigne said, perfectly understandable. For me personally it's worth it enough for the Japanese quality video/audio alone. The soundtrack CD as well as the other extra which is cut from other releases is just the icing on the cake. When Funi's release eventually comes out I'll probably make a file with the Video + Audio from the JP BD, Eng Audio + subs from the US BD as well as UTW's subs - exactly the same as I did with the Index movie. I'm interested in building a HTPC soon too which should make the whole playing back from a HDD vs BD pretty negligible.
 
I've heard that JP BR releases always have better quality than their UK or US counterparts (I think AOA is the only exception to this where they're up to par) but I'm not sure I'd notice a difference. I watch all my Anime on a fairly small 23" monitor at the moment and I'm not sure I'd get any benefit unless I had a big TV or something.

MKV is just a container for everything. Anything you put into the MKV is left as is. The only thing it doesn't support is PCM audio - that would have to be converted to FLAC or AC3 or whatever you want to use first.

I watch all my stuff on a 22/23" monitor and I personally can see the difference like night and day - but that's just me. If you're not overly fussy about A/V quality you're probably not going to see things to such an extent. Also FYI, AoA BDs are just the JP files with English support options added.
 
Yes, but normally the big difference between an English and Japanese release is bitrate. As long as the English release has a fair bitrate (and anime releases nearly always do), I doubt many would be able to tell the difference (especially if they didn't know one was massively more expensive than the other)...

That's surprising to hear. I've never actually seen any JP blu rays but I assumed it would be negligible on such a small screen. I'll have to get one someday to try.

That's not the only factor - there's many things to consider like the state of the materials the licensor is given to work with, contrast/brightness issues, how competent the encoder is etc. That said some of the problems do lie in the source materials (like the banding in Monogatari and K-ON!), but more often than not they are introduced, or made much more obvious in western releases. (Black Lagoon, Fate/Zero, Lain).


I'll stop now before I derail this thread any further. TLDR for my last few posts - Japanese subless LE Eva 3.33 BD w/OST is on sale @ Amazon JP for £17 including P+P. If you have a PC BD drive and AnyDVD/DVDFab you can play back the file with external subtitles by creating an MKV using MakeMKV or MKVMerge.
 
Given the third remake film has received scathing reviews, even on 7-10/10 ratings only MAL, I can't say I am too fussed about the dub delay confusion. But it is a bizarre situation if it's true Anno & co are unhappy with the dub, rather than the quality of the film, given I doubt the voices were changed from the prequels and - Akatsuki no Yona aside - Funimation's dubs are usually pretty damn good.

I do have a question kinda relating to this topic: End of Evangelion. For me, the first remake was a pretty recap and the second was shi... err, a not-so-good Shinji shounenisation where Asuka's character was changed and it went more mainstream harem. So, a Nadia inspired submarine sequel holds little appeal. I would much rather own the Blu-ray of the movie sequel to the TV series. Is there some reason I am unaware of as to why one of the best films ever created is not out on Blu-ra in English, whilst more obscure older films are?
