What Games Are You Playing?

I can't help but feel partly responsible for this...

Sorry to hear you're not completely taken with Syberia. The lack of challenge never bothered me; after years of mind-melting LucasArts puzzles, I was glad to play an adventure game that, when not presenting obvious solutions, I could brute-force my way through. I was also too captivated by the desolate atmosphere and whimsical story to care much about the lacking gameplay. In short, I a fanboy.

Hey, people have recommended me things I liked far less and cost much more - No worries.

I took some time out from Syberia to play my other cheap acquisition of the day, Victoria 2: A House Divided. To say it's named for a speech Abraham Lincoln gave prior to the American Civil War and features Civil War imagery on the box art, it doesn't feature a whole lot of Civil War themed additions if you choose to play as the USA or CSA, which is a little disappointing. The interface is much improved as is performance, but possibly the most annoying change is the requirement to prepare dodgy dossiers as justification for wars. In the 19th Century? Really? Even well into the 20th, you could simply stand on a podium, shout a lot, hand out weapons and point at Country X.

I finally got Dragonball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi cheap the other day. I refused to pay full price, because I've spent the last 10 years (at least) giving Raditz an annual battering, so I didn't feel like handing over £40.00.

Besides having different controls, it's pretty much the same as ever (but to expect a massive change would be silly - you know what you're getting yourself into with DBZ games)...I still really miss a lot of the characters from Budokai Tenkaich 2 and 3 though... :(

Completed Chrono Trigger a few weeks ago and loved every moment of it. I've given up on Trauma Centre. I didn't mind the fact that the game left me a nervous wreck after each operation but the difficulty in chapter 3 was too much... Sorry Amy, I couldn't save you.

Anyway I started Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes.

Just found out some good news: Broken Sword 5 is on the way! and it'll be 2D!!

Some fairly early impressions of Lollipop Chainsaw, to be taken with a pinch of salt as I'm tired and I've stopped deliberately so that I can come back fresh to this.

It's a Suda game alright! Well, the Suda of late (Ala, No More Heroes and Shadows Of The Damned) rather than the Suda of yore (Killer 7.) The combat actually feels really clunky at first, because you're actually restricted to only one button combo strings. A bizarre decision but you can unlock better combos easily enough (If you can come across a shop that is.) They feel quite satisfying when you do purchase them though.

The combat itself is...Interesting. Pom Pom attacks on square make zombies groggy for easier kills from your chainsaw attacks on triangle. Zombies can feel quite "chunky" at times and often take quite a few hits. I suspect that's me being quite fatigued and not understanding the finer nuances of the combat system just yet, whilst also obviously needing more combos.

It looks like there's some RPG-Lite elements to it, as you can buy power up items for Juliette at the shop. And the humour is starting to come through more as of Chapter 1, rather than the prologue.

Apparently Suda didn't have much to do with Lollipop Chainsaw (he's listed as producer) but the game's tone does seem very No More Heroes. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth £30 or whether I should wait for the inevitable price drop in a couple of weeks; but as a fan of both NMH and hot blonde cheerleaders, Lollipop Chainsaw is a tempting proposition indeed.

Also, I never knew that the Broken Sword Director's Cut was censored in any way. I played the original on PS1 (point & click adventures on controller = not fun) and I don't remember any salty language.

Summary of much of the death and violence that was cut/changed here: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=254238

There wasn't much swearing, but apparently even the rather innocuous phrase "damn the game" has been removed. It could be argued that stopping George from being killed made for a better game experience, but the lack of blood and knives through people's necks is unforgivable. I liked that Broken Sword could be pretty dark and shocking in places - it was one of the things that made it stand out.

That's pretty fascinating reading. I own the original and GBA/DS versions and I can't remember the swearing to be frank. I'm just glad that it's back in 2D and we won't get stealth sections and waist-high wall cover to avoid fireballs from dragons. What were they thinking?

Huh! Never knew. It still feels very much like a Suda game though, even without his involvement. It'll be interesting to see how James Gunn's influence will affect the game as so far it's pretty much been standard opening exposition and character introductions. So far I'd say if you're a fan of Suda games then you'll likely lap it up. It's certainly his most accessable game to date.

And this morning thanks to my body clock now being "messed up" so that I wake up at sensible times when I don't need too, I decided to start Gravity Rush. I kind of just want to filly my post only with "Ooo," "Aah," and "Wow!" but that's not very helpful!

It's...in a way very stunning. It's beautiful, the gravity mechanic works amazingly well and the music is fantastic. Even the opening hour or so of being led about makes you think that the game could be something special. I was initially a bit worried about evade being a screen swipe but you can do a small one across the screen so your fingers rarely move away from the buttons long enough to cause problems.

Then the new earphones that I bought yesterday broke and I decided to stop playing. I prefer my handheld games with headphones, despite the speakers on the vita being genuinely pretty good. Still, that's rather annoying...

Been playing Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour Edition recently.

Now with my new PC, I'm most definitley going to have to now get some new Games for that now I actually have the capability to do so.

Gonna have to get Gravity Rush sometime as well after liking the Demo.

Spent the past 2 nights playing spec ops on MW3 with my best mate, some good hours of gaming each night was a nice break from the norm.

Striker shotgun with grip attachment = juggernaut stopping machine

P99 sub machinegun with red-dot sight = infantry bullet wall. Cannot beat its fire-rate per second.

C4 planted in killbox areas

Sentry machine gun placed behind us

Prone at the top of stairs in a 1 entrance building

Predator missile for helicopter

Sorted. Literally a sure-fire way of reaching level 29.

I'm currently playing through Kingdoms of Amalur:Reckoning. It's such a huge game and drawing parallels to the Elder Scroll games are inevitable. I'm a female human level 18 Crusader going through the might/sorcery route, It's a shame the developer has gone under, would have been nice to see more challengers to the almighty Skyrim!

Also Devil May Cry HD Collection is being played on the 360 by my twin sister. Nice to see Devil May Cry being played at full 60Hz rather than the PAL 50Hz of the original PS2 version. The achievements look hard to get - there's 99 of them spread throughout the three games!

Currently into the first chapter of Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. Really enjoying it so far, love the soundtrack and the title screen is in English so it's easier to navigate the options.

Got Lollipop Chainsaw on thursday last week and have been playing it since then, only got 20 achievements left to get, but yeah, i'm enjoying the hell out of it. Sure, it's short, and it's not exactly overly complex, but it's great fun. I love the amount of references there is in the game as well, Pulp fiction, etc and the soundtrack is awesome, was surprised by some of the songs included in the game. Also, Micheal Rosenbaum is pretty good in his role as well. I didn't think he'd suit a comedy-style role, but it really worked.

I get the feel from the game that there is room for DLC if they really wanted to, obviously in the costume department(since there is a pretty big amount to unlock), but stages and such could be added in. So yeah, it's pretty great.

I've been playing a lot of Binding of Isaac and restarted playing Dungeons of Dredmor again with the "name your own expansion" dlc. I've got the whole Humble Indie Bundle 5 to work through now as well, i just don't know what game to start with(i've already beat Bastion though)

I'm having more fun than I've had playing a game for AGES with Lollipop Chainsaw. Awesome soundtrack and so much fun. I just wish it was longer...I'm nearly at the end. :(

I did end up buying Lollipop Chainsaw, and finished up yesterday. Great fun. It's a short game but I don't mind because it's really all about the high scores, and there's also unique zombies and different enemy patterns on higher difficulty levels, AND more stuff to unlock than is possible in a single run through. I've already started over on hard =D

That's basically what i've done, dawning Juliet with some HSotD costumes at the moment getting the special lollipops on hard where i can. Been trying to beat some of my friends high scores on ranked score attack as well, though only succeeded in 2 stages so far.

Same, using Saeko's costume - although I would have liked it more had they modelled Juliette's hair to be down, but oh well. What I really would have liked was the Ash costume from the Evil Dead films that the US got as a preorder bonus but we didn't. Still the game was a really fun ride and got better as it went on. Although damn it I had just gotten You Spin Me Round by Dead Or Alive out of my head and it turns up in a bloody crop plowing segment. Really!? Thanks for that Lollichain :(

Also finished up the Binding of Isaac by getting Platinum God so I started on Little Kings Story. My word, this is a charming little game. I'm loving the soundtrack being quite whimsical with one or two classic pieces. Not played it too much but it's good fun so far and reminds me a little of Pikmin.
