The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a thread)

None of my Kaze releases seem to have a production country listed on the discs, at least that I can see.

I did however notice my Black Lagoon and Code Geass volumes say "Licensed for private home viewing in France" on the back, which is uh, interesting.

I don't know why, but I suddenly remembered Manga UK said Nisekoi was delayed as they hadn't received the discs from Kaze.

If those discs came from France, there may be a problem. One of the big replicators in France was spectacularly buggering it up for about 5 years worth of blu-rays for most big French distributors, and nobody quite realised how bad it was until the beginning of this year. Consequently A LOT of French blu-rays are now not playing black, bronzing and presenting other errors. I wondered if Kaze's discs might be liable to do the same thing.

There's more info on the top post (from Torrente) here: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php ... 0&page=101

I had a quick look at one of my oldest Kaze discs, Black Lagoon, and the production code on the centre of the disc hub is LZ13, which according to this site,

http://www.musik-sammler.de/wiki/index. ... _/_DVDs%29

Refers to Technicolor, in Germany. So for all of kaze's sins, I don't think the discs will be affected by the French problem.

Has anyone here had experience with ebays global shipping programme?

Wanna grab a few things from eBay, and they all use it so was wondering if it's any good. Will it guarantee I don't need to deal with customs?

Used it once recently. Item was under customs limit but believe they allow you to prepay when you buy if it's over...

Last leg was not royal mail and it was "Out for delivery" for 3 days so last part of tracking was a bit flaky.

Now that you say that, all the items bar one are below the limit, and that one is only 6p over...I'll have a think about it I guess, thanks.

Keep an eye open for buy it now / best offer listings too. I made a reasonable offer on an item to bring it just under the customs limit and added a note to say "Best I can offer whilst remaining under the UK Customs limit" and had it accepted right away.

So, I'm looking at what older MVM collections I don't have yet, and I was wondering, have any of these come up as DOTW any time recently?

Elemental Gelade Complete Collection
Requiem From The Darkness Complete Collection
Solty Rei Complete Collection
Ah! My Goddess - The Complete Collection
Black Cat Complete Collection
Trinity Blood Complete Collection
Samurai 7 Complete Collection

Anyone want to recommend me some anime classics? With the upcoming release of Gundam on blu ray and seeing images od space cobra in the "what are you watching" thread, ive realised that in terms of anime shows, ive not watched much from before say the mid 90s.

What gems am I missing out on? Im rather interested in sci fi, so things like galaxy express 999 and starblazers/yamamoto jump out at me, but im not sure of their general availability.

Well the obvious place to start would be Macross - not sure if you've seen any of it already but I suppose the easiest way for us in the UK to consume it at the moment is sadly via the Robotech collection, but it's better than nothing. I'd also heartily recommend Macross Plus too, which is mindblowingly good.

Yeah I'd love to watch the original version of Macross (not Robotech) but it's a shame what's gone on with the license.

Macross Plus is something I remember watching and loving on sci-fi when they used to show Anime late at night :)

I would say, even though it's not the original, and I know it gets a lot of hate, it's worth seeing Robotech in the mean time. If you don't mind dubs, it's just the easiest way to consume the show legally right now and it gets the majority of what makes original Macross so good across. I can understand why a lot of people write it off on principle, but it's not all bad, honest.

I should also mention the Macross movie 'Do You Remember Love' - just watch this clip below and you'll see why it's such a masterpiece:

A personal favourite of mine is also The Five Star Stories - again, this clip below is a bit of a must-watch if you want some sweet 80s mecha action:

The Retro thread might help: http://forums.animeuknews.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19520

I recommend Dirty Pair, there was a region 1 DVD release a little while ago of the TV series, OVAs and movies (as well as "Flash", the later attempt at remaking/rebooting the show). It's a great fun sci-fi action/comedy show with excellent lead characters. It's mostly lighter stuff but it does occasionally deal with some interesting topics. The movies are more varied in tone and kind of follow different continuities (the show is mostly episodic anyway so there's not a lot of continuity in general). It's all good fun though and worth watching. I'm not sure if it'd benefit from Blu-ray or not but I think I'd still like to see a Blu-ray release at some point.

I probably need to watch more old sci-fi stuff myself.

It's difficult to disagree with Lutga.

Robotech is a good place to start with Macross. Robotech only suffers when you compare it to Macross itself, otherwise it's a great show. I'd check out after the conclusion of the Macross arc though, the Robotech-used versions of Southern Cross and Mospeada are not that great at all.

Lutga is also right about Macross: Do You Remember Love as well, it's an absolute masterpiece. That movie would always be highly recommended by me. It's not essential that you've seen the series prior to watching the movie, the movie is an 'in universe' depiction of what happens in the series.

Macross Plus, and Macross II were both released on DVD in the UK, should be able to get a hold of used copies. Both worth watching IMO.

Away from Macross, Yamato is another great series. Recently remade as Yamato 2199 - the Japanese BDs are expensive but do have English subs.

There's also Science Ninja Team Gatchaman - dependent on age you might recognise this as the source material for 80s favourite 'Battle of the Planets'.

Final one, Gunbuster, a Anno/Gainax 6-part series. Go for the series, and not the movie which is a condensed version of the series (eradicates app about half of the material). Well worth a watch. Kiseki did release it on DVD over here but its been OOP for a long time hence not sure how easily you'd be able to pick it up.

I was thinking of buying the Limited Edition Persona 3 movie BDs from Amazon.jp, but I'm a bit confused by what's what. I notice that only market place sellers are selling the 2nd movie too, is it OOP or something? Anyone know?

Anyway, can someone confirm to me that this is the Limited Edition?

Is Crunchyroll in browser being ridiculously terrible for anyone else at the moment? I'm trying to watch something but I have to pause it every minute or two to stop it stuttering like crazy. I find it weird how the console app on PS4 works far better than the streaming on their own site. You'd think the site would be their primary focus.

I vaguely recall that Solty Rei came up a few months back, and Samurai 7 surfaces from time to time.

Slayers seems to pop up once a year, albeit in single series collections.

Last I checked UP1 had the second movie (although oddly not the first), try there.
If you place an order with UP1 I guarantee you will receive an email telling you they can't get it since Rightstuf no longer sells the LE either.

Checked CDJapan and they say it would ship within 3-5 days so they would probably send me a similar email :/ maybe I shouldn't bother then if the 2nd movie is such a pain to get....seems odd that the first movie is easy to get but the 2nd isn't, maybe made less based on the 1st movies sales or something. Ahwel.
