Quick question,is The Fruit of Grisaia worth watching?.im going though my crunchyroll backlog and I was thinking of starting with this.

I'd definitely watch it - it takes the initial premise of a harem set-up and completely turns it on its head, eventually developing (in the second season) into a show that's far closer to the likes of Jormungand and Canaan. It's properly dark, edge-lord stuff at times, but I'd argue that only makes it better. Every episode has examples where it 'goes there' where other shows would shy away, and if you can stomach it, you're in for one hell of a ride.

I'll give it a watch then,it's Expelled from Paradise tonight.but tomorrow I'll make a start on it.

How were the Kaze releases of the Berserk movies? Specifically the Blu Rays? People always seem to crap on Kaze but I've never actually bought any of their releases, so I don't really know what to expect. The Australian release is actually cheaper (Cheapest UK Blu Ray I could find cost £13 but to buy from Australia, with postage, would cost about £11.50) but it would have the added wait time and risk of case damage. There is also the fact that it would only work out cheaper for movie 1, it would be more expensive for the other 2.
Both the Viz and Kaze releases of the Berserk movies don't look all that good, so this is one of the rare times where it probably doesn't matter which releases you get. They both use the same low bitrate encode littered with problems like banding.
The only difference is the extras (which are all apparently on Kaze's Descent disc anyway, rather than each individual film). Madman just imported Kaze's discs for their release, so if you pick up the AU release you'll get a Kaze disc.

I'd never usually recommend a Kaze release under any circumstance, but for Berserk it really doesn't matter. Just don't buy any of their other releases...

That sucks to hear. Thanks for the help.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Is there a reason why Anime DVDs have this weird scanline effect when characters move or a camera pans? For example:
tmK7RwH.png

That's from Paranoia Agent. I've seen it in just about every Anime DVD I've owned across multiple distributors (Although I think MVM releases seem to have it the worst) and it is quite distracting. I never see this with non anime releases or on Blu Ray anime releases, so it's really quite strange. It's one of the reasons I'm not too big on buying DVDs. It's less the quality and more the weird lines.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I can't say I remember seeing that myself when I watched the show, but it's perhaps the symptom of it being an older show - a lot of the early widescreen prints on DVD were very poor (see Manga's release of Negima?! For example)

If you sit far enough away, you don't notice it. Also, the screenshot is an extreme example. If a character moves their arm for example, the lines only appear on the arm, and it's only on the frames inbetween the first position of the arm and the second position of the arm. One place you notice it the most is the credits since they're constantly moving.

Also, I had a look around to see if I could find a solution and if I turn on Deinterlacing on in VLC PLayer it reduces the effect a lot. Still kind of weird it happens at all.

Edit: Looking at the VLC Wiki seems to offer an explanation:

Traditional TVs do not display one picture-frame at a time. Instead, they display alternately all the odd lines and all the even lines of the picture. That way, they can get a fast display rate of 50 or 60 half-pictures per second, without the bandwidth requirements that full pictures have.
Computers however, do display full pictures, typically at a rate of at least 60 pictures per second. So to get optimum quality when displaying TV-material (such as DVDs) on a computer, the player can convert the alternating half-pictures to full pictures. That is called deinterlacing.
Modern HDTVs operate much like computers in that they display full pictures. Much like computer-based video players, they have deinterlacing built in so that they can display traditional TV material.

Sounds like it's more of an issue with playing the DVDs on a PC. I never thought to test the discs on another machine.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Is anyone else's Crunchyroll Queue acting up? For some reason it's removed all of my currently airing titles apart from Kinmoza and it won't let me remove Non Non Byori. Every time I click remove it goes but when I refresh the page it's there again. When I try to add a show back to my queue that it has removed it says it's already in my queue. It's weird.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

That doesn't sound good.

I know it's played up in the past - for a good while it wouldn't track your episode progress, which was a real pain.

I hope it gets sorted soon. It's one of the features I really like about CR the most. I've posted on their help forum, hopefully I get a reply soon.

That's Interlacing. Every other line is shown on screen in any given time, alternating at every other frame. Most DVDs as well as some anime BDs (whether intentional or via cock up - e.g. early 2013 Sentai releases) are interlaced, however you can find DVDs with progressive flags (e.g. Shana season 2, Sankarea). As you stated, viewing such material on a computer monitor makes the scanlines far more noticable. The best option I found for viewing interlaced content on PC was to use MPC-HC with LAV/Mad VR, and enable deinterlacing in LAV video.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Late comment regarding the Berserk Movies: If you want a matching set, avoid the special edition for the first one. I went for the special edition and as well as being lumped with a DVD sized case for a Blu-ray, I am now also facing the prospect of having to repurchase the first one if I want mine to match... (Same with Persona 4).

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Got a reply on the forums saying there are know issues. A temporary solution is to rearrange the queue and that has worked for now.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Why would you want to remove Non Non Biyori anyway?

I do actually have a bad habit of keeping things on my queue, it's kind of huge. I have a section for things that I've watched but either I'm hoping for a new season of or I will probably watch again. There are actually a couple that will have new seasons this year, so that's nice. Also, I have watched Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun something like three times so I guess it was handy to have it there.

It might actually be worth keeping Non Non Biyori on your queue for the second season, it's likely they'll add it to the same "page" so it'd just update into the next episode (I think that's how Kinmoza worked, for example).

Ah right, I guess I'll put it back. I did only remove it because I finished it, I loved the show :p

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I have no idea what the queue is even for, lol, I just click on the shows when I want to watch them. Is the queue thing genuinely useful?

I find it really useful on the console app as it means you don't have to go scrolling through loads of shows to find the one you want, then scroll through the episodes to find the one you wanna watch. Basically it keeps a bookmark on where you are in a show, it updates to the newest unseen episode which can be useful if you're watching something like Gintama as it always holds your place for you, even if that's half way through a episode. I don't have much in my queue but then I don't watch much on CR anyway.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Have funimation given any idea when the Steins;Gate movie will be released? Just finished the game on teh Vita and need it asap.

I seem to recall it was mentioned at an Anime Convention recently, but can't find any word of it, so think i'm making it up?
