The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a thread)

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I've never had any problems with streaming on crunchyroll, but have either of you tried using their apps?

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I rarely have problems with Crunchyroll these days, it could be the times I choose to watch having less traffic or something but they have also improved things in general I think. I usually watch it with the App on the Xbox 360 (would watch on the PS4 but the app isn't available here, probably because of evil Sony and their pet Animax), which I'd say has improved dramatically over the year and a half that I've been using it.

I did used to have issues where episodes would skip (usually about 10-30 seconds) and where there'd be occasional sudden buffering but those are pretty rare these days (not sure when I last saw either, although I haven't streamed as much in the last few months).

If you have options, you could try using a different app or browser or maybe you could mess with settings (no idea which ones though). As NormanicGrav said, it's probably not an internet issue but it could be caused by all sorts of things and there might be a way around it at your end (or maybe not).

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

The android app works fine but that's about the only option I've got until we see the CR app on PS4. It's not so much of an issue as it is an annoyance. I can deal with it, I just wanted to see if it was me or them.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Crunchyroll is pretty much perfect for me these days now I've got better connection speeds - and this is on both iPad and laptop. The only other issue I can imagine is if your hardware (ie. the device you're using to watch on) is old, as opposed to connection issues?

And yeah, the lack of a CR PS4 app continues to be a major bug bear, due to Animax's stupid lockout.

My computer is getting on a bit but it should handle video streaming just fine.

Looks pretty solid to me. I'm using a 16GB to be fair, but I'm pretty sure CR doesn't require something that high just to work.

You can get the CR app to work on a PS3/PS4, you just need to create a US PSN account which has access to download the Crunchyroll app and then you can use it on your main profile :)

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

The CR web player was utter balls when I'd tried to use it in the past. The IOS/Android and PS3/4 apps are by far the more desirable option for viewing IMO. As DragonBlaze stated above, create a US PSN account and give it a go on your PS3/4.
The only problem I really have with CR now is that when I try to watch Jojo on the way home on Fridays it'll only display at 144-240p for absolutely ages - so it's unwatchable with god awful audio. I can download the 1080p rip and watch it at least twice (probably) before it's even watchable on the app.

Ah right, thank you. I already have a US account, I just never thought about it :p

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I only have problems with Crunchyroll if I'm at my parents' and it's after 6pm as I'm fairly sure their ISP throttles their bandwidth. I occasionally have problems where an episode will randomly end partway through but if I go back into my queue and reload it it will start again from that point and play fine.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Only problem I've ever had with CR apps was on the xbox 360, now and again the episode would just skip forward about 15 seconds and even if I went back it would just keep skipping that same part, only way around it was to go back, then fast forward about 1 second into the part it was skipping and press play, was really annoying.

Thankfully I have since moved onto using the CR app on the PS4 (thanks Rui for telling me I could do the US account thing), and not had a problem since (although I did prefer the 360 apps interface).

That was the same problem I was talking about earlier, it seems they may have fixed whatever was causing it since I haven't seen it for quite a while (this is on the Xbox 360).

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

IL, your computer and connection are both many times better than mine :D

I think a lot of the troubles with Crunchyroll are software-based - Flash chomping up memory after visiting a certain website or some obscure plugin clash - rather than it being especially demanding technologically. I see a lot of people worrying that their computer is too slow for it when their PC is a veritable beast of a machine.

I have noticed the thing where pausing an episode for too long stops it working properly (fortunately resume works quite well, so I just reload if I've gone AFK for a while). And I've only had the issue where the opening credits of a show freak out and stutter once, with Nisemonogatari, but that was because I watched it right after it went up. I don't know why but the most popular shows seem to suffer from congestion sometimes, whereas if I watch them later in the day they play perfectly (fortunately I don't watch many super-popular shows and everything else is fine). You'd think their content distribution service could handle the entire UK anime market without breaking a sweat but maybe it takes a while for the video to get to the right parts of the network for smooth streaming.

I've heard it's pretty good for anime only watchers. For those who read the visual novel they say it's a below-average/poor adaptation due to various reasons like additional fan service added.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Also due to reason like "those people always complain", I'm guessing.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

How were the Kaze releases of the Berserk movies? Specifically the Blu Rays? People always seem to crap on Kaze but I've never actually bought any of their releases, so I don't really know what to expect. The Australian release is actually cheaper (Cheapest UK Blu Ray I could find cost £13 but to buy from Australia, with postage, would cost about £11.50) but it would have the added wait time and risk of case damage. There is also the fact that it would only work out cheaper for movie 1, it would be more expensive for the other 2.

They're not that bad. I own the first film through them. Apparently all of the extras are on the third movie but Viz's release will work on Region B players by selecting the top menu (Mangaranga owns them and has tested it).

I'd definitely watch it - it takes the initial premise of a harem set-up and completely turns it on its head, eventually developing (in the second season) into a show that's far closer to the likes of Jormungand and Canaan. It's properly dark, edge-lord stuff at times, but I'd argue that only makes it better. Every episode has examples where it 'goes there' where other shows would shy away, and if you can stomach it, you're in for one hell of a ride.

I see. I'm not really bothered about the extras, so that's not an issue. As long as the film itself is okay then I'll be fine. Thanks.
