The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

The Discotek blu-ray news sounds interesting.

Im personally all for adoption of standard definition on HD format if it means we get series that we wouldn't otherwise. The only issue is region coding.

Discotek are hands down the one distro I'm always excied to hear new things from. Having just taken delivery of the Captain Harlock box set, I'm basically convinced they can do no wrong.

If I remember correctly, the [Madoka] TV series didn't sell amazingly for them. Which probably falls on Aniplex USA's fancy limited edition releases being region free
I think it's more likely a side effect of Madoka being an extremely otaku series, but them having to license it like it's a mainstream one.

Sounds like a perfectly good idea to me, why use ten DVDs when you can use one BD?
Because of the extra appeal generated by the "10 DVDs!!!" sticker on the cover, of course!

Considering how the first two Madoka Magica movies are receiving a dubbed release in Japan later this year, I wouldn't be surprised if MangaUK are waiting for the eventual Rebellion dub before releasing a complete box set.

I imagine Aniplex would only let MangaUK do a a box set of Beginnings/Eternal, then a release of Rebellion later down the line (to match the Japanese and American release formats). However, in the past haven't MangaUK indicated that they only want Rebellion and are hesitant as Aniplex are only selling the films as a trilogy?
Bit late of a response I know, and I don't know if this means much, but I was told at MCM that Aniplex usually look for partners to commit to the whole franchise, hence how the heavy hint about Monogatari Second Season came up in the conversation.

Plus Manga so set your expectations accordingly.

I'm hoping Manga have seen the reaction to their AoT 'collector's edition' and realised it looks cheap, tacky, and for lack of a more sophisticated word **** and have decided to make it an actual Collector's Edition and give that bad boy a CLEAN chipboard art box :) we can only hope. And while we're at it with the dreaming out loud INDEX! RAILGUN! HAGANAI! thanks guys.

Yeah because we can always judge something that hasn't actually been realised yet in its final version.

Yes, yes we can. Welcome to the Internet. If they didn't want it judged they wouldn't of put the image out. The blue banner saying 3 disc collector's edition on a box intended to house 5 or 6 discs (foolish). Them putting the image out months before the release is, if they're a smart company, a form of market research intended to judge the reaction of fans before the product is finalised. And the reaction has been massively negative of this design which hopefully they've taken note of and rectify to create a far superior release befitting what is undoubtedly their biggest release of 2014.

I second this, Manga UK need to stop being cheap and try something different for once (like their suggestion for chipboard artboxes for instance, Attack on Titan would have been the perfect start for that type of change except they pulled a Brotherhood).

Whatever they announce in July better be worth it, because they only thing that has kept me interested in their Q3 line up is Hentai Kamen and the Ghost in the Shell Steelbook. I was actually hoping that they would get the UK rights to Captain Harlock 3D (with Anchor Bay owning the license for multiple areas).

It's hard for Manga to stop being cheap when that's what their entire business model is seemingly built on.
Just face it, the best thing you're likely to get from Manga is a slipcover, maybe with some artcards if you're lucky.
Other distributors, both here and in other territories are trying new things which just won't happen through Manga, (AoT set, Psycho Pass Box + OST etc.) and let's be honest here, if MVM at the very least can do an artbox for their biggest release of the year that just shows Manga up completely.

Let's also not forget that they've taken the piss by stripping the extras from the discs, putting them on DVD only and selling them only as part of this so called collectors edition. The UK audience just gets the **** end of the stick in every way.

Yes, it is their business model to do budget/affordable releases BUT we're not expecting every series gets this treatment. You would think that they would go all out on the 'collector's edition' due to how popular Attack on Titan is. As you said, MVM realised that with Fate/Zero.

I can understand not going down the physical merchandise route as most of the comments, from regular fans, are along the lines of "How much? I'll buy the necklace/pins from ebay!" but, at the very least give it an artbox, none of this cardboard crap.

I'm keeping my pre order on Amazon in case it changes, otherwise I'll order the Australian version.

I'll just chip in with my standard maxim of 'cheap and affordable are magic words in anime' here.

All the talk of pricey limited edition releases over recent months and Japanese licensors dictating release plans is kind of disheartening for me. I've been effectively priced out of the fandom lately.

And this is a problem. Because if I love this stuff and I can't afford to indulge in it, then you can bet the same is true for other, more casual fans. The west needs keenly priced releases / budget options.

Just to add in my own opinion here but I think they should do both an affordable and a limited/collectors edition (at least for high profile series, like Attack on Titan and Fate/Zero). That way casual or not so well off fans can buy the series they want while fans of collectors editions can buy the expensive releases most other people can't afford.

^^ That's what I meant, thanks for wording it so well.

They should keep to their usual tactic of being affordable, but when it comes to series like Attack on Titan, they should offer a limited edition/collectors edition as well as a budget release, but push the boat out on the packaging by using a rigid artbox, none of this flimsy cardboard stuff that arrives creased.

Agreed.

The box around the FMA: Brotherhood collection is easily damaged, I took a look at mine the the other day and just from being sat on my shelf's and taken out a few times, there's obvious damage to the top of the box, its a nasty looking bend/crease... and I look after my things ya'know so I don't understand why it looks the way it does.

Though, with all this news of them looking into better quality packaging for bigger releases, I can't really complain as it's possible that next time we get a "better than standard" edition from Manga, the box quality will be higher and less easily damaged. I just hope it really does happen cause like pointed out here, if MVM, the smaller of the three companies can get a nice rigid box out for their biggest release of the year, there's no excuse why Manga can't.

Would be nice if Manga stepped up a bit and done something different. At least for certain release.

Anyone remember the days of yore, when on occasion Manga would do something a little different, like so...

Can I just chip in with I'm not having a go at Manga for their budget releases. I know things like Cat Planet Cuties and Freezing aren't gonna get massive releases in the UK and to be honest if it's a choice between amaray DVD/Blu ray release or no release I'll take the budget release. But if it's marketed as a 'collector's edition' collector's expect something to last. (I binned the Brotherhood box after 2 weeks cos of wear and tear)
