The Anime/Manga I Bought Today Was...

Grave of the Fireflies (BD/DVD)
Laputa: Castle in the Sky (BD/DVD)

Had been playing around with the idea of importing the Japanese silhouette editions, but seeing as I have a lot of them already I don't really want to double-dip. So, decided to start picking up the SC/O editions that I'm missing, and then plug the gaps (Ocean Waves) etc with the silhouette editions later on.

Bunch of stuff turned up today, but this takes absolute pride of place;

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Complete Collection 1 of 2 DVD

Going to see if i like Gundam Seed or not so i can decide on whether to try the original Gundam that AL is releasing later this year.

What version of Seed did you buy? If you bought the out of print Beez UK release you should have gotten the French release. You can get both parts together for under £20 and it has English audio and subtitles.

That's a little bit like saying "I'm going to see if I like the Adam Sandler remake of Citizen Kane so I can decide whether to try the original", but okay.

They're identical releases, the discs are even the UK discs, so I wouldn't bother unless you can't get Part 2 for cheaper than the French release. Still, that's a pretty good price for the UK release, they normally go for more being out of print.

I haven't seen the original MSG but Seed was pretty good. Either you hold the original series in very high regard or you really dislike Seed. I thought Seed was heavily flawed but not bad by any stretch.

When they're doing something interesting or different with Gundam outside of the pretty awesome 35-years-worth-of-lore filled Universal Century timeline, I feel like it's worth doing (00 or ∀ for example).

When they're just re-hashing stuff from the UC in another not particularly different or interesting universe with not particularly different or interesting characters, it just seems pointless. Such is my opinion of Seed - I don't even necessarily think it's bad, just sort of unnecessary. People can and almost certainly will disagree with me, of course.

I suppose that my opinion would be more in line with yours if I had seen the UC first. I wouldn't call Seed pointless though. If it is a rehash as you say, it's at least done in a way that is more accessible to those who haven't seen the UC or know anything about Gundam. A lot of people, such as myself, find the UC very intimidating. I mean, the UC stretches across a ton of series. It's a lot to watch. I think there is room for a more stripped down updated take on it for those not wanting to watch decades worth of anime.

It's a fair point, but the word I'd use to describe diving into the UC for the first time is "exciting" rather than intimidating.

I'm a sucker for huge, developed settings with long time-lines that span different eras (which is why I things like Star Wars, 40k and a dozen other fantasy literature and RPG settings). You get into the UC and it just keeps on going, there's always more to explore. You see characters like Char and Amuro live out most of their lives on screen and page and watch them develop and change. You see the rise and fall of different technology and politics. Despite its occasionally wonky writing and repetition, it's wonderfully in-depth and I wouldn't trade the UC for any other iteration of Gundam.
