[Overseas] Anime News & Announcements

I also can't get on to my account. None of my email addresses are valid, even when recovering password.

A lot of people are currently having this issue. I decided to make a new account anyway since my Got Anime membership expired a couple months back.

I was briefly excited but as I already verified an account and the shipping charges are potentially more confusing to work out than before, I don't seem to gain much from this update. If they ever switch to using a real courier and not Brokers Worldwide I'll consider moving back though. Since the big parcels come via Parcel Force, the customs fine processing fees and delays aren't worth bothering with. I hate Parcel Force.

Still have loads of time to check my RS account, as i will only use them again during the 12-day sale and Christmas sale at the end of the year. Simply because i hate custom charges :)

So after a bit of back and forth between Right Stuf, apparently my old account isn't being migrated across as it's been too long since I last used it. Over 2 years according to Customer Service, 18 months according to my bank statements. And regardless of whether my account can be migrated or not, the order history (which is what I was really interested in keeping) can't be migrated anyway because of data conflicts...

So I'll have to re-register with a new account. I get the feeling that this site upgrade could have been handled a lot better.

I just checked my account, and that hasn't been moved over either (the reset password function shows that there is no registered account with the email address I gave) even though I'm still receiving newsletters but I stopped using them after customs got wise to their $5 per item declarations and started declaring full prices on the customs form.

With the changes in shipping charges, I might start using them again but only for manga since shipping charges means that I can get two and not pay more then what they cost in shipping and I won't have to worry about customs (or royal fail) wanting their pound of flesh in the guise of import charges.

So TRSI finally realized it wasn't 1998 any more... sort of. I guess this is them getting fully punished for taking so much time over modernizing their infrastructure.

They really are the worst.

A trailer has been unveiled for Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna), which was being restored in 4K.

Also, according to MAL this 1973 film is a hentai. what?
Think of it more as an arthouse movie.

Interesting to hear about Rightstuf! - although having to deal with ParcelFarce means I'm still not gonna use them.

In other news, HdE is a frustrated fanboy today. Checking up on Ranma 1/2 set 6 reveals that it's available via Amazon UK marketplace sellers on blu ray... but none of them have it on DVD!

Whaaaat??

I've sent some emails to my favourite sellers there. But it's kind of weird. I'd have expected Turn A Gundam vol 1 to be showing up on Amazon Marketplace as well by now. But still no dice.

Kind of annoying.

Have you tried the US Amazon branch? Thanks to the AmazonGlobal shipping option you can pay the 20% Tax (and no need to pay Royal Mail fees; £8) over there.

Price: $34.99 [£~22.03]
Including P&P & 20% VAT: $51.56 [£~32.47]

It's an option. Although I've never yet figured out how to do the pre-pay on VAT through Amazon.com.

I need to do some price checking first, though. Considering I paid no more than £21 - £23 per set for the other DVD volumes, a full tenner on top of that is the sort of extra on top I wince at a bit.

Buy upgraded shipping and it auto charges you equivalent VAT as well.

Unfortunately you can't do it on the basic option.

If I could 'like' a post on here, that'd be a strong candidate.

I'll have a nose about on the site later, and maybe investigate Up1 while I'm at it.

I think Amazon changed their system recently so that you can get the "Global" option on standard shipping (they may have also changed their prices a bit). When I was last on I couldn't see a way to turn it off at all.

If it says "Amazon Global" on your shipping option then it should include pre-paid VAT. You'll see "Import Fees Deposit" on the checkout page, that's where the import VAT goes in (although it may be zero if the total is low enough, they seem to estimate zero even if you're a bit over the threshold).

I think it's a pretty decent system anyway, they refund any deposit that doesn't get used and you don't have to worry about a charge from the courier (which is the worst part of importing as I see it). The only downside is that, between shipping and VAT, you end up paying almost as much in pounds as the dollar price. That said, it's probably much the same however you import things (or maybe you can get it cheaper at the risk of a charge that could end up more expensive).

I should probably also mention that you shouldn't need a new account, you seem to be able to use the same account on any Amazon site (though maybe everyone already knows that).

Not true. Although I've had a Amazon UK account for ages I had to set up separate ones when I first used Amazon USA and Amazon Japan. I used the same email but I had to input everything as I was classed as a new customer.

I think at some point in time you could use the same account for Amazon US too, but I might either be going back ten+ years or completely making that up. You've never (to my knowledge) been able to use the same account for their JP site as others.

My Amazon Japan account was originally my UK one. At some point in the past, the databases evidently diverged and I now have a different password on both sites - I once changed my UK one for some reason but it didn't change on the JP site. The first order in my history was back at the start of 2004 (not sure whether it was actually my first order there as I don't remember that far back).

In fact, I've never had to make a new overseas Amazon account at all since my UK one has always worked on the JP/CA/US/DE/FR/IT sites automatically.

So I think that might be why people are reporting different things. Amazon hasn't been very consistent, and your experience will vary depending on when you signed up. I know that nowadays, from a selling perspective CA/US are linked and so are UK/DE/FR/IT/ES. The rest are all separate.

Edit: I was curious about this and apparently Amazon's official line is that at this point in time, you can use your Amazon account globally aside from on Amazon Japan (where you have to make a new one): http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?docId=596896
