Neon Genesis Evangelion

I've heard that there are 4 new Eva films coming out in japan this year.

(well it was something I read 4 months ago, but I thought I mention it now)

VERY VERY UBERLY OLD NEWS Otaku XD, The first film has already been out in the cinema and stayed in the Japanese charts for a high number of weeks. The second will be out soon enough.

I'm getting annoyed by Evangelion for some reason. I'm hearing about it way to much. srsly.

Is there a particular point to this animation? A toy range or something?

Yep, the Petite Eva figure range. I have a "Petite" Misato and Shinji and they are absolutely adorable!

I would say it's Gainax doing all the whoring, rather than Anno, and they've been doing it for a very long time. But, I like the fact that there is so much Eva merchandise! ^_^

Because Gainax haven't been squeezing every yen, cent and penny out of eva that they can over the last decade?

I agree it really is time for Anno and Gainax to move on but NGE really does deserve a proper ending and tieing up once and for all.
I hope after the 4th film thats it, i love eva, but it needs to be left alone.
You'd never see Shinichiro Watanabe doing this lol.
But you know this won't be it for Gainax, we'll have the dvd's released individually, then packaged together then a collectors edition then about 5 years on we'll have the ultimate collection of series + movies etc.
Is the only credible anime series Anno has done NGE?
Not seen any of his other work but he needs to move on too.

Anyone got the Yahoo widget? T'is a pretty cute desktop clock, and you can change the characters. The majority are there, but I usually switch from First Rei, Second Rei and Kaworu. A few of the characters change outfits- from school uniforms to plug suits, and every so often these adorable little emotions show up around their heads, like a heart, or sweatdrops, amongst some.

You must tell me how to find this widget! Kaworu desktop clocks ft(potential)w!

Naw, there's also Gunbuster, which is hitting it's 20th anniversary next year, I hope he/Gainax do something for it, or I'll be PISSED. ;_;

Never heard of it lol, worth a watch?

The Yahoo! Japan Eva clock is so cool! I have Toji on now ^_^

Give us a decent DVD release? Ah think so.

The US already got a fantastic Gunbuster release, I think. Maybe they'll remake the series with lovely new visuals?

I think they should release two movies each being 1.30 hours long, with new animation, voice actors & so on.

By us I meant the UK, if the US got a good release then we should get that over here too. And no I don't think Anno should do anymore remakes, he needs to create something new for a change.

Eh, Rebuild of Evangelion is the only project in which Anno has revisited a pre-existing franchise ......

Yeah (Well I guess you could throw Rebuild and End of in there too) and he should leave the remakes be now and work on something new. Do we really want more retellings of older stuff or would you rather have something new and fresh. It would be great for Anno to kick everyone in the ass and prove that he can still make a great series/movie and isn't just relying on Eva for his pension.

End of Evangelion was always planned. EoE was the real ending for Eva, TV Tokyo just wouldn't allow it.

Also, RoE is not a retelling at all. The first movie was quite similiar to the original, but the second movie is going to be very, very different.

I would love to see Hideaki Anno use his new studio to make the awesome anime series/movies that he's more than capable of making. However, I'm more than happy with more Evangelion! ^_^

Thats assuming Hideaki Anno initiated these remakes. Obviously aI don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but I figure its a pragmatic choice on his part, better to be involved in it than cause a rift with Gainax. Maybe in treturn they will fund a new show of his...all idle speculation on my part I should add ^_^.

Nah, I'm pretty sure it was Anno who wanted to do Rebuild. He even founded his own animation studio (Khara) to make the movies.

You know, I always find the relentless merchandising of the show at odds with the message of the series, of growing up and such. Seems problematic when you then expect fans to buy bikini dolls - wonder if such things bother Anno_san...

Well, I have problems working out why the series is so extremely popular in the first place. All the characters have real, usually disturbing problems, Shinji is far from being the masculine, save-the-day hero that populates most anime and the plot is incredibly complex - just how is this so popular as to warrant the masses of merchandise?

I disagree that it devalues the message of the series in any way. EoE is an amazing powerful movie, regardless of the fact I can buy Evangelion-branded Doritos and wash them down with Eva-branded coffee, while wearing an Eva shirt and reading a spin-off harem manga.

Well... that still makes it a retelling doesn't it.

re·tell·ing

A new account or an adaptation of a story that already exists.
That seems to be a fitting description of Rebuild to me.
