Evangelion 3.33 You (Cannot) Have It

Any guesses for when the final movie will see a Western home release? No? ^^;

Given the number of times I've enjoyed the first two I might start writing parts 3 and 4 for myself

Right now my worry is more how much longer will it take for the UK release once the U.S. release comes out.

I would hope, given the ridiculous hold up which has ensued, that it'll be a simultaneous release, but until they actually release any info of any value it's all academic. I'm guessing our best gauge on this is to keep an eye on the removal of it from this site's pending list. I do hope they get on with it though. This alleged hold off whilst they do cinema runs doesn't seem to be panning out - at least I can't say I've seen it advertised in any local cinemas.

Despite owning the admittedly excellent HK version of 3.33, I still find myself following up on the trainwreck that is Funimation's handling of the North American release. It should be a case study of what a PR department should not do.

Anyway, this forum topic was brought to my attention. The key post is from The Eva Monkey, which casts more doubt over the official story from Funimation.

When they say the ball is in Funi's court though - that may mean, for example, Khara have said 'you can only release it if you re-do the dub as a literal translation, ball's in your court now' and Funi have the option to do that, but are staying put as to an English watcher, a literal dub would sound awful.

I'm still amazed we haven't seen or heard anything about it since they announced it had been put on indefinite hold at the start of the year. Something is clearly wrong somewhere..

I think I agree with the top post, if this doesn't come out this year or early next year at a push, I have serious doubts of it ever coming out.
Why would you not bother to release your most popular license? Unless you're suggesting the bubble has popped for Funimation and they can't afford to release Eva 3.33 or something?

At a certain point, you just give up. In 2016, 3.33 will be 4 years old, meaning the US Home release has been stuck for about 3 years. If what Eva Monkey says is true, and Khara aren't the ones causing issues, what could possibly be stopping them from just releasing it? It must be something, as you say, Eva is one of the most popular franchises they have, 3.33 would make a ton. From the outside, there is no reason why this shouldn't be out or at least have a solid date, so that suggests there must be something seriously wrong inside.

A shame really because I love the first two movies, and like many others would simply like to enjoy the last two movies. I took the leap to the movies because I expected that it would be a much better proposition to watch these and get the story, since the series was a great example of how something becomes episodically fragmented and expensive to buy. Ironic really.

The "ball being in their court" could mean anything. If Khara were to say "you can release this only if everyone working on it sacrifices their firstborn child" then the ball would be in FUNimation's court, but one couldn't blame them for not immediately capitulating.

I really wish NGE was easier to get hold of. It's one of my favourite series and it's one that everyone who's remotely into Anime needs to watch, not only because of how good the show is (In my opinion anyway) but because how iconic the series has become. The easiest way to get hold of the series is the seperate Perfect Collection volumes but even then you're talking £40+ for a release that has pretty poor picture quality due to the show being released very early in the life of the DVD. The best way to experience Eva are the Platinum releases but then you're talking upwards of £70 and they're quite hard to come across. I was quite lucky that someone here offered to sell me their Platinum Collection for a reasonable price. This is one show that is in dire need of a re-release, not just so I can get my hands on a nice blu ray set to watch the show again, but so tons of people can experience the show for the first time without having to spend a bomb.

And let's not forget that Manga's old DVD release of End of Eva is quite possibly one of the worst transfers ever committed to DVD.

As I say it's a real shame. Evangelion has always been one of those shows that I wanted to get into, and has been on my list ever since I found out about it after my initial enthusiasms in the wake of Gunbuster and Ghost in the Shell, but unless a series is only running to part one and two (Robotics:Notes and Steins Gate are good examples which I do own like that) I do have a somewhat stubborn insistence on looking/waiting for box sets to ensure complete viewing, which is what makes this Evangelion movie situation ironic. It really does become prohibitively expensive when you have a series spread over twenty irregularly available discs of four episode instalments at £10-20 per pop, and although you can appreciate that prices in a relatively niche market will be high (since the Japanese don't seem to go for hard copy ownership as much as we do in the west) it kinda shoots itself in the foot with this behaviour when it comes to envisaging a market grown enough for discs to become cheaper.

The price of Eva isn't high because it's part of a Niche market, it's expensive because the company that made the DVDs, ADV, went under meaning the discs are out of print and rare.

Eh, I'd expect them to at least make an effort, which does not necessarily seem to be what they're actually doing.

To be fair to FUNi they are making a hell of an effort.... at shoving the blame on to literally anybody but themselves.
