Brainjar TV - HdE's Youtube channel

Re: So, I went and started an anime review channel on Youtube...

I had a chance to fiddle about with it for a bit a couple of weeks back. It's an intimidating bit of kit, but all the important stuff seems pretty intuitive so far.

I'm just looking forward to being able to do some of the stuff I can't do in MovieMaker. Half the battle in that software is working around its imitations. Plus, it compresses video and makes any sound issues you had going in quite noticeably worse.

To be honest, if my old pal hadnt so very generously given me the package, I'd be making do with what I've got so far. The only aim I have for the channel at this stage is to make back the money I've spent getting the equipment for it together. And that looks like it's gonna take a LOOOOOOONG time.

Re: So, I went and started an anime review channel on Youtube...

Youtube is kind of a scary place, I don't think I'd want to sign up there. That said, I'd vote for Summer Wars if you're taking votes here.

I haven't watched all your videos yet but your Sky Crawlers one convinced me to give that a go (when I get around to it, though I'll aim for sooner rather than later). Saying that, I think I have seen it before but have almost no memory of it so it'll be interesting to see how that goes.

That's literally one of the biggest compliments anyone could pay me!

That revie proved pretty controversial elsewhere online. It seems like any positive rview of that movie rubs people who didn't like it the wrong way. One poor character on another forum seemed to take my praise for the film as an awfully personal slight.

Personally, I was more upset about teh content ID problems I had with that video!

I've never understood people like that. I mean, people can have different opinions, why would you take it as some kind of personal attack?

I'll confess, I find that attitude strange as well. I mean, what difference should it make to somebody personally if their opinion of a short slab of make believe is challenged?

Two things I try very hard to do with my reviews is acknowledge that my opinions are just that - MY opinions - and supply clear reasoning to support them. You can't just say 'Bleh This is crap. Don't watch it' or 'OMFG! BESTIST SHOW EVAAAAHHHH! Ehrmagerd! Flawless! Here's some boobies!'
(Why, yes. I may have watched a few other Youtube reviewers for a bit before starting my channel. How did you guess? :p )

To be honest, it just makes me happy that people watch the videos, return for new ones and give them time of day. All I really hope is that people find them useful and maybe discover some new shows or movies as a result.

Aw yeah - a bazillion views on each video and some of that PewDiePie money would be nice as well. But, y'know... baby steps.

Getting upset when someone challenges an idea you're attached to seems like a pretty human response to me, some people just choose to defend it in a more emotional manner than others. Attack is the best form of defense!.. Or something like that.

I'd see it as a positive thing if you've managed to challenge someones beliefs in a rational way and still prompted an emotional response from them.

I get that but being personally offended, as if the maker of the video was trying to attack you, I don't get.

The more upset you get the easier it is to ignore facts/opinions, feeling as though the video is attacking you rather than the subject matter is a pretty good way to get upset.

I think it's a knee jerk thing, personally. But I also think a lot comes down to how opinions are put over. I mean, I notice that some of the most widely disliked anime critics on The Tchube certainly have a knack of putting their views over obnoxiously.

I remember years ago, on a movie review show, they had Kieth Allen on as a guest reviewer, and he was asked for his opinion on 'The Sixth Sense'. His response was something along lines of 'I think you've got to be thick to like this movie.'

That to me has always been the yardstick, and it's the kind of thing I took to heart when I started writing critically about stuff anywhere. You can criticise the work in front of you. You can call it dumb. You can even say some really mean things about it. But when you start saying those things about the people who are enjoying it, that's over the line.

It's not really in me to view somebody else negatively because of the anime they watch, movies they like, or the music they listen to. It's ultimately trivial. So when I see a contrary opinion on entertainment media voiced in a really extreme way, or accompanied with a condemnation of folks who disagree with it, I'm always a little taken aback. It's commonplace, I know, but it feels weird to me.

Personally, I'm quite happy for folks to disagree with points I make in reviews or have a different opinion. That stuff can be interesting to yak about, and it keeps things interesting.

Re: So, I went and started an anime review channel on Youtube...

Yeah, I agree that you cross a line when you start attacking someone's character for liking something. You might think someone is stupid for liking a certain thing, but it's not going to win you any favours as a critic by saying that to them, and you shouldn't be too surprised if people react badly.

But, if you enjoy a "bad" piece of work, and can talk about why you enjoy it, even though it's bad, then that's what makes things interesting. Or conversely, why you didn't enjoy something perceived to be good. After all, if we all liked the same things, the world would be a very boring place.

Re: So, I went and started an anime review channel on Youtube...

EXACTLY, St Owly.

I think theres very clearly a difference between a good critic and a bad one. The good critic informs, comments on the product under examination and hopefully entertains as they do so. The bad critic flings pejorative terms around like confetti, often supplies little comment on the item at hand and stands behind their dogma rather than any quality of analysis.

Re: So, I went and started an anime review channel on Youtube...

Just a quick heads up to mention that voting in the poll is now closed.

I had to draw the results from several places, but it would seem that ther was an even number of votes between Captain Harlock and Summer Wars. SO... I've elected to decide this via the time honoured tradition of the coin toss!

Here we go!
[Picks up a coin.]

[Flips it in the air.]

...

I'll be back once I've fished my coin out from under the sofa, folks!

Re: So, I went and started an anime review channel on Youtube...

And the winner is: CAPTAIN HARLOCK, SPACE PIRATE!

That'll go live, all being well, in a fortnight or thereabouts.

And seeing as Summer Wars proved popular in the poll, I've marked that to move up my review list.

Google and Wikipedia will set you free. Check out 'fair use' and do a bit of digging, and you''ll find something you can use.

Fair use, by the way, is something you REALLY need to read up on if you're featuring any video footage, images, music... it's a pretty tiresome thing to go through, but worth it to know where you stand on things.
