Getting upset when someone challenges an idea you're attached to seems like a pretty human response to me, some people just choose to defend it in a more emotional manner than others. Attack is the best form of defense!.. Or something like that.
I think it's a knee jerk thing, personally. But I also think a lot comes down to how opinions are put over. I mean, I notice that some of the most widely disliked anime critics on The Tchube certainly have a knack of putting their views over obnoxiously.
I remember years ago, on a movie review show, they had Kieth Allen on as a guest reviewer, and he was asked for his opinion on 'The Sixth Sense'. His response was something along lines of 'I think you've got to be thick to like this movie.'
That to me has always been the yardstick, and it's the kind of thing I took to heart when I started writing critically about stuff anywhere. You can criticise the work in front of you. You can call it dumb. You can even say some really mean things about it. But when you start saying those things about the people who are enjoying it, that's over the line.
It's not really in me to view somebody else negatively because of the anime they watch, movies they like, or the music they listen to. It's ultimately trivial. So when I see a contrary opinion on entertainment media voiced in a really extreme way, or accompanied with a condemnation of folks who disagree with it, I'm always a little taken aback. It's commonplace, I know, but it feels weird to me.
Personally, I'm quite happy for folks to disagree with points I make in reviews or have a different opinion. That stuff can be interesting to yak about, and it keeps things interesting.
