UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Mode 1 is Aniplex right they don't even like us having 12 episode sets that's why we're getting DRx2 and Az Late (my belief anyway)

Not necessarily, Andrew has said Standard Editions of a few Aniplex titles will come eventually.

Also I take exception on AL's behalf to the classification of Durarara!!x2 as late, 13 months for full cour set is not bad at all. Tokyo Ghoul got a similar strategy, and there was no complaining about that. If you're genuinely attempting to compare AL's release strategy to AoA's, you are mad. There's no way AL will be able to get their releases out on the same timescale, given that they are not the corporate sibling of the company they're licensing titles from (and then there's the whole "more episodes, lower prices" thing AL have got going on)

Andrew probably knows more than we do, but I'd personally assume that the UK market wouldn't be able to handle a company behaving like Aniplex of America do. Hence the general attempts from everyone to avoid that strategy, and as somebody who would be priced out of any AoA-esque releases, I'm rather thankful they are trying to avoid that. :D

Some interesting insight into why things happen the way they do. I guess it's all about risk management, Japan would like a slice of the international market but are concerned about the ramifications of allowing too good of a release model.

For example http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail ... page=rt_11

The US got a collection of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya back in September 2014, we just got ours, Japan is still waiting. It's no wonder the 5 minute specials were not part of the US/UK release when Japan itself has not got it's collected edition yet, imagine if back in 2014 Sentai had got everything, no one in Japan would be interested in this release as they'd all of imported by now.

Onto other matters, I'd like to raise this complaint/concern/nitpick over AL releases.

I find it extremely frustrating that after selecting a specific episode rather than play all I end up back at the title menu after the episode has finished. It's quite common for me to watch things a few episodes at a time and it's rather annoying to find myself back at the title screen when I want to be progressing to the next episode. Pretty much every disc I own from other companies have it set up to automatically move onto the next episode rather than return to title.

Any chance we can see a slight tweak to your future releases to overcome this minor annoyance?

Hate to be this guy, but that feature actively annoys me. If I select an episode of Arrow, I want to watch one episode, not the entire bloody series (as Warner Bros. discs will do). And I was complaining about the way FUNimation set up their Danganronpa disc the other day, if I select an episode, I want the blu-ray to display the runtime of the episode, not the cumulative runtime of the disc as it would on play all...

This is probably as good a point as any for me to mention something I've held back from posting elsewhere on the boards where I wasn't sure if it'd fit:

I'm actually perfectly happy to wait for a physical release of a show. This whole business of getting shows so close to their Japanese release, which so many folks seem so preoccupied with, has never really been a big deal to me.

Just sharing this by way of communicating one punter's perspective. Having lived through the heady days of VHS when ANYTHING getting an official release was a really big deal, a wait of 13 months seems like nothing to me.

Of course, if you were saying 'UK release of the latest Gundam show, but you have to wait three years', my attitude might change a bit... :p

Good news is that is doable, I was just watching a Sentai BD this morning where each individual episode showed how long had elapsed for that episode rather than showing the overall time since the disc had started.

I know it's doable, it's just sheer laziness on FUNi's part for not doing it. They appear to just be using the episode menu as a chapter selection for the play all, rather than creating a new title for each episode. Although the font size on the episode names is so so small, unless you know the number of the episode you're screwed. It also has forced English credits at the end of every episode and 9 episodes on one disc, Warner Bros. took some heat for doing both of those on JoJo's but apparently it's fine when FUNimation does it...

It's even possible to display individual episode runtimes rather than a cumulative runtime in play all mode, if you set the disc up right.

I apologize if this has already been discussed but is the Tokyo Ghoul CE officially OOP? I've checked Amazon, the AL Store, Zavvi and it's affiliates, Base and even eBay and I can't see a single copy for sale.

Yes it's now OOP. The 1000 copies went fast.

That would be why the SE comes out on Monday. Looks like Tokyo Ghoul was a "Model 2" from Andrew's earlier insightful post.

The only person that isn't surprised is Andrew. He told us it was tracking insanely well and we should order quickly if we actually wanted a copy, I thought he was over-exaggerating to hype the release, he wasn't. :D

I'm guessing the situation with the US CE led to more people importing the UK Tokyo Ghoul CE?

That's what's making me very worried about not pre ordering a copy of Gundam...

I think Andrew mentioned that the box should last a while after release (could be wrong).

He said it was tracking well, but I believe that was in the context of it being an old UC Gundam series. (I think this might have been during the conversation where Andrew said non-UC Gundam performed way better in the UK, but maybe I'm muddled.)

I think it's more a case of anime fans underestimating the power of teenage girls. Tokyo Ghoul is huge sales-wise, but nobody really talks about it in anime circles, so I'm guessing it's mostly a casual/borderline casual thing. And from anecdotal experience, it seems to do really really well with teenage girls. If I had to guess, it's because it nails the violent but not scary, and if you're not a cynical ******** like me, it's quite emotionally engaging.

My copy of Baccano arrived today. It's a real nice set for sure, though it's a little weird that there's no information on the box whatsoever once you take the shrink wrap off. Just not used to it, I guess.

Not sure if anyone else noticed.

Should be Act 01 - 06.
