UK Anime Blu-ray & DVD Bargains

As someone who regards Detroit Metal City and The Ping Pong Club as the height of comedic genius, I was consistently amused by Desert Punk. The dub may not be faithful but it is hilarious and the I reckon the show is worth watching for that alone. Whether you think it's worth ten pounds, though, depends on how you feel about raunchy juvenile humour.

While the show isn't the greatest thing you'll ever watch, there's a twist in the second half of the series (which, like a lot of shows from that era, takes on a more serious tone) that I thought was brilliant. I'm not sure I've seen anything quite like it before. As for the ending, I don't remember the specific details (/getting old) so I can't comment on whether it's as bad as other posters have said, but I'm sure I wasn't left with a WORST ENDING EVER impression.

Oh, if folks are curious about the show, I think it's definitely worth a punt for a tenner.

My issue with the ending is that the show just fizzles out, and by the end, it's done things with its characters that might well make sense, but makes them feel completely throwaway. I can't really say more for fear of posting spoilers.

But then, feel free to ignore this ageing, embittered basement dweller. I am VERY exacting in my expectations.

Oooooooh FMA is a series I need to rebuy due to an Ebay error. Why oh why is it BluRay thoug. I need DVD :(

Do you think they'll be a DVD release again as I'm sure last I looked the series was becoming sparse.

Tempted to order Tokyo Ghoul from Zavvi.

You can get Funimation's Region 1 DVDs of FMA:

http://www.up1usa.com/Details/F1162-Ful ... Collection

http://www.up1usa.com/Details/F1169-Ful ... Collection

The series doesn't look like it'll be released here on DVD/Blu-ray anytime soon, Manga only has Brotherhood so i'm guessing the original FMA series is unable to be licensed atm.

Was Desert Punk ever on TV? I have very vague memories of the art work/OP from before I started watching Anime and I have no idea why, it's weird. Been tempted to purchase.

If they don't have an upcoming DVD release of FMA by the time I pick up the Blu, I'll sell you mine if you'd like? It's this release: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fullmetal-Alche ... +alchemist Four separate parts w/ English dub. I wouldn't charge you a ton either :3

Funny, I liked the concept of the twist for the latter part of Desert Punk but hated the implementation. I felt it required a bit too much stupidity and needless risk taking by certain people. Admittedly, the people involved were already taking a huge and stupid risk with their plan but for some reason their choice of commander just seemed a step too far to me.

I'd agree that the ending was pretty bad.

Cheers Dragonblaze!

Ooooooh name twin, if I don't see these before then (praying for an MCM miracle haha) then yeah i'd definitely love to be considered for them!

It's a shame the BluRay isn't combi play as I'm partial to those now haha.

No problem, happy to help :)

Yeah i think the reason they're not doing a combi pack for it is that it'll be a 6 disc set for the blu-ray so adding in the dvds would make it 14 discs overall which would make it quite a large set.

How much are you looking to pay for the DVDs? As i'll be putting mine up for sale as well as i'll be pre-ordering the blu-ray too, i'd do mine quite a bit cheaper than UP1 charge :)

Crunchyroll have the Persona 4 Collectors Edition for £58 for the next 12 hours or so

https://www.crunchyroll.com/store/p/165 ... rs-Edition

It's quite a bit cheaper than the UP1 price although once you factor in shipping and import tax, I'm not sure if it would work out that much cheaper.

Didn't even know Crunchyroll had a store

Looks like it's £65 without a premium membership, i think UP1USA is the best bet though ends up being around £75-80 inc postage and at least from there no customs charges :)

Indeed, shipping is €20 to Ireland which makes it pretty much the same as up1usa. Better off going with up1 for the lack of additional customs/vat charges.

I'm not sure yet Dragonblaze, depends on the condition and just my funds for that particular month. Had to pay out £500 to my credit card and Mum for purchases made in June this week for example lol.

Just trying to replace all my mishap buys. I need Escaflowne (buying from AllTheAnime when released :)), FMA, Hellsing and ScrYed though I never finished the latter so can't see me being too fussed to fix the mishap with that purchase.

Noticed Hellsing at an ok price but again hoping to find it for a good price at the UP1 stall at MCM hehe.

I never found the UP1 stall at the last MCM (I presume it was there... somewhere?) do they sell imported sets on their actual stall or are they not allowed to do that?

Gutted you couldn't find it! I spent ages there going from A-Z. Picked up 4 anime series last time. As for imported sets, I'm actually not sure I'm afraid. I'm kinda hoping they do as I want Hellsing Ultimate 9 & 10 :p

As I understand it, it's flat out illegal for them to sell anything that hasn't been formally submitted to the BBFC and doesn't have the BBFC ratings all over it (unless it's exempt, which most, if not all, anime wouldn't be), but theoretically no more illegal than shipping them from within the UK.

That said, I doubt anyone particularly cares about enforcing that.

I can't remember finding it at MCM Manchester; but I found it at MCM London (May) and they only had a handful of imported titles; majority of which were S.A.V.E Editions

Hyper Japan last weekend definitely had a lot of US editions at the UP1/Manga stall - definitely mainly SAVE Editions but also pretty recent stuff like the Darker Than Black deluxe set, Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon and the expensive Pony Can releases of Yuki Yuna is a Hero etc.

Not illegal afaik unless it contains banned material, e.g lolicon. Hell there is a movie memoribilia store near Orbital in London that sells a lot of R1/A imports of movies and tv series.

I think the rule for BBFC certification only applies to domestic releases.

As far as I know, it applies to any item sold within the UK.

So importing from US sites is fine, as the sale doesn't take place within the UK, but importing from UK sites isn't. Theoretically that means UP1's .com is legal, but their .co.uk isn't, and Anime Limited's sale of Gundam The Origin is very questionable.

I think it's more a case of not caring enough to enforce the law, rather than it being legal. I know there are customs cases where they have impounded material that they believe breaches the Obscene Publications act, but I don't think there have been many cases of that in recent years, as there isn't anything that's been 100% confirmed to breach the OPA in years.
