UK Anime Blu-ray & DVD Bargains

Although that said, they haven't done a Blu-Ray upgrade since Samurai Champloo, and by their own admission, that didn't exactly sell well for them.

True; but the Blu-ray would feature the English Dub and be in HD (the original UK DVD was English Sub only) - which would possibly entice people to pay for it. MVM could also do a MangaUK and opt to release it on Blu-ray only - that would potentially drive sales up as well.

I've already got the DVD of Mayo Chiki but I do plan to get the Blu-ray at some point. I'll hold off for a while so if MVM does announce it that'd be great but I'll probably just end up importing the US release otherwise.

It's a good show, the characters have some pretty good stories and while it is one of those "almost harem" type shows it ends up being more of a romance with a "fixed" couple. Any other attraction is actually quite well handled I'd say, which I think is one of the strengths of the show. It's a shame that there's pretty much no chance it'll get a second season, it doesn't exactly end on a huge cliff-hanger but if you enjoy the show and get to like the characters then it'll leave you wanting more.

There's a few decent deals on Amazon at the moment:

Haruhi Suzumiya season 2 [DVD] - £9.99
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time [DVD] - £2.99
Cowboy Bebop complete set [DVD] - £19.99
Paprika [Blu-Ray] - £4.02

That's an awesome price for Bebop!

As is the Haruhi season 2 box... although, somewhat undermined for the ludicrous prices season 1 goes for if you haven't already got it and want to take in the whole thing.

Some good deals on Zavvi for their usual Mega Monday

Blood Lad Collectors Edition(Bluray) £24.99
Cowboy Bebop Complete Collection(Bluray) £17.99
Elfen Lied(DVD) £12.99
Gurren Lagann Standard Edition(Bluray) £17.99
Perfect Blue Standard Edition(Bluray) £5.99

Some drops on upcoming MVM Blu-Ray titles:

A Lull In The Sea - £102
No Game No Life - £30
Amnesia - £30
Muv Luv - £26

Onimonogatari is also down to £14 at the moment.

Jesus ******* christ. I don't think 30 pounds for short series is cheap price either but 100£ for a one series is crazy. I know that it comes with some extra stuff but still. It's a shame that this hobby is getting more expensive these days. I understand that it's nieche market but i can't blind buy anything with this kind of prices.

Movies especially are pretty darn steep. I would like to own copy of Wolf Children for example but i'm not going to fork 20+ euros for a one movie.

But anyways. I'm going to list one deal so that this post isn't completely off topic.

Hal DVD 11e on Zavvi.

I have to admit I did think that way when I first got into anime, but at this point, you kind of just get used to it - anime costs a lot in comparison to 'regular' TV/movies - it's just the way it is. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, although you can certainly understand the factors of why it is that way. Ultimately, it is a niche interest, where the majority of titles only sell a few hundred copies, so have to be priced at that degree to make money. In a way, I'm kind of glad we're in the UK, as even if we get stuff later than everywhere else, it's usually cheaper compared to American or Japanese releases.

If you know where to look, aren't bothered about collector's editions and aren't desperate to own things as soon as they're released, then you can get stuff for pretty cheap. Sure, most anime is never going to go down to the levels of £12.99 I paid for Castle season 6 in HMV of all places (24 40 minute episodes) but there are definitely bargains to be had.

A lot of the Americans seem jealous about the prices we get, and there does seem to be a bit of a debate as to the morality of importing a UK release to avoid US prices.

It would not surprise me if a fair portion of Anime Ltd.'s sales came from Americans trying to avoid Aniplex US (which, if it gives them a considerable windfall, could also explain why they licence so much Aniplex stuff)...
