The Visual Novel Thread

I've had Soul Link for a year (the sci-fi premise/spaceship setting interests me) but haven't played it yet. And with 23 bad ends it should last you a good while ^_^;

KiraKira is definitely worth playing.

Hmm, CloudedMinds also recommend KiraKira and I have read a couple of... mixed... reviews for Soul Link, so I may go in the more musical of those two directions.

Trying out Little Busters atm since its been recently translated. Why isnt this a anime yet???
They're considering it. The reason there isn't is because they(Visual Art's) would only trust KyoAni to not suck, and they only do one show at a time and were roped into K-on! and Nichijou.
They now accept other studios are capable of adapting a VN okay.

It still wouldn't feel right if KyoAni didn't animate an adaptation of Little Busters. And yeah, I'm reading it right now too. It has potential to be better than Clannad. I love the mini games and they seem to have upped the drama level to make up for the lower number of routes.

All my Kuddles

Seriously though just got round to completing Komari route. Can't wait to play around with the other options

Edit: another note to add is I came across what these stats work for in the game, use full to anyone;

For Baseball

Arm Strength - Affects pitching power and speed of passes and distance of balls hit
Body Strength - Endurance. Characters without a lot of it will perform visibly worse as the match drags on
Agility - Affects success rate for outfielder catches and running speed
Reflex - Affects success rate for infielder catches and accuracy of hits
Concentration - Affect the success rate of infielder catches (it's more like it makes the character less likely to miss a catch), as well as accuracy
Judgment - Affects general intelligence of actions (less bad judgment in who to pass to in defense, and less not ignoring balls and end up getting triple played like poor Tomoyo), chance of catching a ball in the outfield before it hits the ground (err... what's the name of that again?), and chance of stealing bases according to someone on KeyFC)

In Battles

Arm Strength - Determines damage for strength-dependent weapons. It's really useless in the ranking battle, but it's useful in Rin's barehanded fights against Sasami & Co. and those mystery creatures.
Body Strength - Reduces damage from strength-dependent weapons, has a minor effect on HP, and chance to block attacks (not evade, block)
Agility - Turn order and evasion
Reflex - Accuracy, Evasion, and Counterattack rate
Concentration - Accuracy, Critical, Block
Judgment - Not really sure, I think a little of everything
Luck - Criticals definitely. I think it has an effect on stuff like dices, but I almost never get that weapon so it's hard to confirm.

I actually gave Katawa Shoujo a go the other day as my first visual novel based on a recommendation elsewhere; although in 'safe mode'; I like to read and to game so this seemed like a nice way to relax, kinda reminded me of the old game books you used to get.

Gotta say I quite enjoyed the run through of the route I ended up on, and I was quite surprised at the overall quality of the game given it's a 'made for love' endeavour. It has certainly peeked my interest in the genre, although with my sitting ending up at something like 6 or so hours, with some sleep in between (I kinda have an addiction/compulsion to finish things once I start), I'm not sure I'll necessarily have time haha

I also found that zoomed to 1080 on my screen with the aspect preserved, it didn't actually look that bad. Music was quite nice.

I played the most static and choice free of the routes seemingly (Shizune), which also deals with my slight criticism of it'd have been nice to have a lot more choices. As the BIG choice with that routewhich affects whether you get the good/bad route is pretty near the end, I also read both out of interest. Overall it was pretty powerful stuff, even if with that route, a lot of things are perhaps more implied or hinted at, than directly stated (I understand some of the other routes are a lot more explicitly romantic etc), but when you think through some of it later on...yeah good stuff.

Am looking forward to seeing the other routes, especially as I hear some of the best story sections with Shizune...are actually not IN her route haha.

As far as it goes, I felt the material seems actually quite respectful towards the whole scenario as well, I can see a lot of other material in this vein would probably make quite a lot of jokes at the expense of disabled people, whereas the material I saw in this game seems in fact respectful and supportive in many ways; as you are not only dealing with whatever malady affects whichever characters you chose to involve yourself with (in Shizune's case, she's deaf, and can only speak in sign language, and largely gets through her best friend who translates for her), but also the writing deals with the psychological and physical affects the main character's situation has on him (a heart condition).

I'd quite like to play through the Lilly or Hanako route, but I dont think I'll be doing so just yet for the aforementioned time reasons, busy week coming up and the last thing I need is to get into work tired because I ended up staying up waaaaaayyyyy too late because I got really into a story :D

Why are people using Katawa Shoujo as a first VN? Your perceptions of VNs are going to be based on that and you will compare everything you read afterward to it.

Well you did ask. And I'd hazard a guess that my answer, obvious as it may be, is the same answer to that question you're likely to hear no matter who you ask.

Yep, it's free, and it's a 'for the community' effort which seems to have been made with a reasonable amount of love and care, why shouldn't I try it first?

I'd like to try some others like Kanon and Clannad (as I really like the anime), but I was recommended this one and there's...well no reason NOT to try it.
