The Visual Novel Thread

Started Kara no Shoujo last night. I'm only a couple of hours into the game but already I'm intrigued by the murder-mystery plot and impressed by the detailed background art. I love the elegant character designs and subdued colour palette too.

What excite me most of all is the notebook, which contains profiles of every character you meet; clues picked up during the pont & click investigation sequences and from conversations; a map of the area of Tokyo where the game is set with selectable locales; and a detailed relationship chart. Kara no Shoujo is not just a visual novel.

So far I've not stumbled upon any problems with voice and font fan patches, so that's nice. No nookie yet, either, and at this point I actually would have preferred there not been any at all. I can see myself mindlessly clicking through the H scenes just to get back to the story.

I do find some sex scenes appropriate in the context of romance. It makes sense at least then. However when you have things like Saber in Fate/Stay Night saying "I need mana from you but let me suck your dick first" it does lead to eye rolling. I still read them though. Don't want to miss anything....*ahem*

I agree that the sex scenes are appropriate in a romantic context - those in Crescendo I found incredibly powerful - but sometimes they do feel tacked on, as if the scenario writer didn't really want to include them. You can usually tell when that's the case as they're badly written and about as erotic as kick in the knackers. For games whose entire raison d'être isn't porn, the more tasteful the better.

Anyway, Kara no Shoujo continues to deliver. I'm about 4 or 5 hours into the game (yeah, I'm slow) and we're just about past the character introduction stage. Did I mention how much I love how the notebook, and how it's continually updating with new information about the plot and characters? Well, I do.

Oh Man, OhManOhManOhMan!! I've fully completed Clannad, 100% unlocked CG's and every bit of music. Was it worth it? Defiantly since it blows the animation out of the water. I'd go about it in more depth but not right now.

As for the moment my next VN is De Capo, and have already started to go through Katori's route (yes I was that bored to start another ASAP). An interesting game that goes by 'trail and error' from when the protagonist wakes up to where he eats lunch

well in a guide I used to follow it said it was 300 hours, though I not sure if that's what I spent playing it. I did have it over a year at least mostly playing it when on holidays

Damn, son, that's some dedication. These days I feel like I've given a game a good go if I get four hours into it. ^^; Congrats!

It's something like 50000 lines.
Average confortable reading speed is 2 2/3 words per second. ~12 per line. so 4.5 secs per line.
~60 hours + transition effects which Clannad is heavy on

It's fairly replay heavy as well, without a guide. Going for 100% is prety brutal.

That's right. Some of the "Bad end" routes or even just "The other option" in a multi-choice decision may lead to an event to give you another CG. Or in F/SN, you unlock all the routes and Taiga/Tiger's Dojo marks, you get a special scene for it (as well as others as you unlock the different ends).

So yeah, unlocking 100% doesn't mean completing all the good routes.

I see what you both mean, since I've played other VN's that use that bases, but for Clannad that is not necessarily the case. Sure there are Bad Ends (or "A" Bad end as far as I'm concerned) and optional requirements for things to happen. Such as the Yukine's storage room curse. There's no CG award just an event, The CG's unlock for whatever route you decide. After Story only unlocks once the player has 8 orbs of light and has completed Nagisa's+Fuko's route. There's a preferable play order as well:

Misae --> Tomoyo --> Yukine --> Ryou --> Kyou --> Kappei --> Sunohara --> Kotomi --> Fuko --> Toshio --> Nagisa --> After Story

The one's in bold are where you get an orb of light from, after which in "After Story" you play 3 times. Once for helping the bakery, Once for not and then finally for the True End.

I can only guess that Maxon hasn't got all the lights from "After Story" to get the true end

No, I have gotten every light. I am talking about getting every event, CG and other hidden stuff.

Jast USA/Nitro+ will be releasing Saya no Uta and Hanachirasu together on one DVD for just $30, and also "various download configurations". No release date yet.

Linku (NSFW)
Still no release date for Saya no Uta? Argh!

Maybe your missing the other end with Fuko then, cause **** knows how you played it since it's not rocket science
