The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a thread)

Personally, I saw now issues with it - I re-watched it again recently and it definitely looks like full HD to me, and not an upscale. ie. When you're watching it, it's definitely far better than DVD quality. I think if you're anything other than a super-observant viewer, you won't notice anything wrong with it.

The code geass blu rays are good value and look better than any DVD release you can get your hands on. There is quite a bit of banding but the show still looks fairly good.

What is banding exactly? It's not a term I'm familiar with.

Oh that. I'm glad to know there is a term for that because it bugged the living hell out of me when watching Non Non Biyori on Crunchyroll. Not a dealbreaker though.

Does anyone know if Nichijou is legally streaming anywhere? If not, what's the best Region B friendly blu ray option?

It was available on Crunchyroll but the license expired. The only legal source now is the Region 4 PAL Australian set from Madman.

Ah damn. Was hoping to watch the show in HD. The Madman release is fairly cheap though, if you buy the separate volumes it only comes to about £20 with shipping.

Thanks anyway.

I was wondering, where does everyone buy their figures from? I only own one figure and I bought it at a convention. I know there is obviously Amazon and eBay and the like, but I don't know if you guys use any figure specific sites. If possible, I'd like them to be UK based, I don't really want to spend a boatload on figures, about £10-£20 all in.

Anime Z has a physical shop in Newcastle but they do online orders as well. The owner is lovely as well, so if they don't have what you're after he might be able to get it for you. http://www.animez-store.co.uk/

Other than that, I mainly use AmiAmi or occasionally CDJapan (though the latter is usually more expensive hence I don't use them as much)

Thanks for the suggestions, AmiAmi seems to be the best site. A couple of questions, I was looking at used figures as I'm not wanting to spend a bunch and they mention that there is a scale to measure the condition of a used figure. I can find the scale but I can't see any indication on the page of what condition the figure is actually in. Another thing, how is postage and customs and stuff on this site? I would go for the cheapest postage option, the unregistered small packet and I'm only looking at the cheap prize figures. The fact they don't tell you shipping amounts until invoice is pretty crappy. I really don't feel comfortable ordering something when I don't know how much I'm actually paying for it...

Should be in the title.

Shipping & Handling Fees (S&H)
Some rough estimates of EMS fees are as follows:
Small-Size Poseable Figure - appx. 1,500 JPY ~ 2,000 JPY, to North America
1/8 - 1/6 PVC Figure - appx. 2,000 JPY ~ 3,600 JPY, to North America
(Oceania is generally the same price, Asia is appx. 15% less, and Europe/South America are more expensive)

Shipping Costs
Shipping costs are calculated after orders are placed and all items in the order are ready to be shipped. We are able to provide shipping estimates for in-stock items. If you would like an estimate, please contact us before placing an order with the item code and name. Please note that we are unable to provide shipping estimates for pre-order items because their final size and weight have not yet been determined.

I've never actually bought anything though so that's just copy/pasted from their site.

I see, now I feel like a moron haha.

Also, if those shipping rates are right, It looks like I won't be buying figures from AmiAmi. I know it's expensive to ship stuff from Japan but when the shipping is shaping up to cost more than the figures I'm looking at, it's probably not worth it.

Eh, EMS is for the impatient and those with disposable income. When it comes to shipping, most sites will offer EMS, Registered SAL and SAL. SAL is the cheapest and unregistered (costs about 800 yen), so there's a risk you'll lose out if your parcel goes missing (though, personally, I've never lost a parcel this way) but on the upside, because the parcel doesn't have to be signed off at customs, there's a chance you'll get delivered without the ransom fee from Royal Mail.

Though, if you really want to cover your ass, buy from HobbySearch (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/) instead of AmiAmi. AmiAmi mark everything as consumer goods but Hobbysearch ship everything as gifts, so even if your parcel is searched by customs, you'll avoid the fee anyway.

EMS is for those that want their 2-5 day shipping items delayed 10 days by customs and parcel force with a nice 20% + £13.50 bill attached.

I've used AmiAmi and HobbySearch quite a lot. AmiAmi are cheaper on shipping and on item cost and I've only been hit twice on Reg Sal shipping. HobbySearch tend to have things in stock longer (as they cost a little more) and don't offer Reg Sal for some reason :(

On a slightly interesting note I did manage to avoid paying customs on one of my reg sal items quite by accident. While tracking it royal mail showed an attempted delivery, which I knew was wrong since I was home that day so I used their website and the tracking number to rebook a delivery. The following morning I got a card saying it was being held at my local office for customs payment, but when I got there the clerk told me it'd been put on a van because of my re-delivery request. Online tracking showed it was being returned to sender (which freaked me out) but it was delivered to me the following day.
