The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a thread)

This is a question I remember Manga talking about in one of their podcasts once - but does anyone on here buy DVD editions of shows instead of the Blu-Rays, even if they have a Blu Ray player, because of the lower price? I imagine it's pretty uncommon on here - but would be interested to know if anyone's done it on a show they were only casually into.
Absolutely not. The quality gap is just far too great to justify buying DVD at all if a HD master exists. DVD is completely worthless in my eyes.

Nope. Blu Ray or no purchase.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I have bought DVDs of shows I'd rather have on BD when the BD release doesn't exist at all, because I wanted to watch the show, but I'd never opt for the DVD just to save money. The price difference isn't big enough, and to be honest even weak shows often seem better when the picture looks good. Especially fan service titles.

Also, even if the video is theoretically identical for some shows, BD offers nicer subtitles >_>

It was more of an issue back several years ago when BD was rather niche and its future seemed uncertain, but now I buy everything on BD where possible.

I probably would, especially if the Bluray was an upscale from an SD show. It would depend on how much I liked the show and the costs as well.

I think this is probably the only time I'd consider a DvD over a BD, if the upscale was poor and the DvD itself was solid. Otherwise the quality of BD is just too great for what is a relatively small jump in price.

This is also hardly a consideration now with everything being animated in HD

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

At the moment, I only have a DVD player. So I only buy DVD's. I'm not as much into anime as I am to manga, so that's more where my money goes. I'm not knowledgeable about picture quality (or technology in general as a few on here know i.e. me trying to figure out Crunchyroll haha) . It looks fine to me :/ but I've never watched a Blu-Ray. As said before, I don't know anyone with a player. Maybe if I did see one though I'd be like 'Woah!! What was wrong with me?!' but....I've not

I'll catch up to you all eventually. Be patient with me ^-^ I've always been slow in this regard aha!

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I am guilty of buying DVDs when I have a blu-ray player, well a games console. Mainly because I don't see a large enough difference in the quality, that may just be down to my eyesight being awful.

Even if I did upgrade, I would probably still buy DVDs for blind buys.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Where possible I buy the Blu-ray; if not i'll just get the DVD - but i'll sometimes buy a DVD (if on offer) and then re-buy it on Blu-ray if it like it (such as American Imports).

Although if a Blu-Ray is available (in America) but it's region locked then i'll probably just get the DVD - it all comes down to pricing and how much I like the series I guess.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I still lack a blu-Ray player (yes I know I should get with the times) however if I did I may consider dvd over a blu-Ray if it was a show I felt very little towards and of course presuming there was a sufficient price gap. My sight is however rather poor (white stick type poor) so I am less bothered with visual quality than I would otherwise be as ultimately regardless of quality I will struggle to see it.

If sight was not so bad I like to think that it would be a case of blu-Ray only.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

My case is kinda similar to GolGotha's, I try to get Blu-Ray's whenever I can but I still get DVD for series I'm not very interested in or if they're on offer.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

If I saw a really good deal for a show I wasn't fussed about on DVD, I might get it even if a BD was available.

Even if I was in a state where I could afford the DVD but not the Blu-ray, I'd rather wait until I had the cash for the Blu-ray than buy it on DVD.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

If I have the choice between the two, I'll opt for the Blu-ray 99% of the time. But on occasion I'll take the DVD when the Blu-ray is inferior. It's happened with non-anime, Life on Mars which had 4% NTSC slowdown for the US market, and was an up-scale anyway. And I'm holding onto my Durarara!! DVDs until AL can released their fixed version. And also on occasion where it's only out on Region A. I may have the combo packs of Princess Jellyfish and Cat Planet Cuties, but only for the DVDs.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Does anyone know if the New video group digimon releases are region 2 compatible?

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Does the Australian complete collection of Penguindrum use the remastered blu-rays? Just want to make absolutely sure before I order it - Kaze's UK release is not doing the series justice.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Australian Penguindrum I believe uses their own encode over Sentai's. While it does look better, the English audio has been dropped down from the HD audio.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

And Siren's encode is 1080i, like Sentai's, though the video quality is supposed to be better. I thought it looked fine.

Also, it received a rather average subtitling job (which is nonetheless undeniably superior to Kaze's). Over to JustPassingThrough:

Siren use only the one font for all of their on screen text, whether it is subtitles or captions. There’s also inconsistency when it comes to placement on screen. Sometimes, the preferable option is used of putting the caption at the top and the dialogue at the bottom. Other times everything gets stacked up at the bottom of the screen. When two conversations are going on simultaneously, both translated using the same font, it can be very confusing, and there are times where text just doesn’t stay on screen long enough, or stay at the same position on the screen for it to be read.
Not mentioned here is the blinking subtitle issue that distracted me throughout discs 1 and 2 (it was fixed in discs 3 and 4).

So three Western anime distributors had attempts at Penguindrum and all ballsed it up to varying degrees.

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

Cheers for the info, might hold off picking it up for a while now. Shame that the show hasn't got an error-free release outside of Japan. :|

The Italian release was 1080p
Okay, an error-free English subtitled release outside of Japan. :p

Re: The Q & A Thread (for questions that do not need a threa

I imagine if (or when) Sentai release in a complete collection, it would be corrected. They did far better on the Bodacious Space Pirates set.
