The General Conversation Area

I think Flame Painter does have an iOS version, but whether the Humble pack would cover that, I’m not sure.

Does iOS refer specifically to iPod/iPhone/iPad compatible versions rather than just ones for macbooks and iMacs? :) I think I will check the iPad app store and see if it's available on there, maybe drop Humble Bundle an email asking if they know as well :)

I'm the opposite because I struggle a lot with speaking and listening even in my own language (auditory processing issues) so while Japanese is a phonetic language, I'm way more interested in reading/writing than the other way around and never use my speaking unless I'm actually in Japan communicating with people. From my experience most resources favour the speaking/listening conversational side of language learning and there are a lot of books which use romanised text to avoid needing to learn the script, so you should be able to reach that goal. Japanese For Busy People used to be a very popular series (though looking at it now, they do seem to introduce the scripts too - from memory I thought it was all romanised) and I think a lot of the businessperson-targeted conversational Japanese books romanise everything because most people learning for work purposes don't want to go beyond spoken conversation.

Learning the actual characters might be a step too far but I would recommend learning the syllables of the text (you can just write the syllables out in roman text), because understanding how they fit together and which syllables actually exist will really help a lot with your speaking/listening. Romanised Japanese uses several different standards and knowing that there are two different 'o's (with different pronunciations) is quite important, for example; sometimes they are romanised differently (i.e. 'o' and 'wo') but sometimes they aren't, and you have to learn to look out for traps like that if you're reading from sources which don't use the Japanese characters. Once you have a grip on little tricks like how it all fits together then it's just a matter of as much immersion as you can handle to complement your lessons. Anime/live action films with subtitles switched off are good, Japanese penpals/language exchange partners are good, whatever works for you!

That actually does look pretty awesome, I'll seriously consider it, though my main goal is still to speak and listen. Remember when a bunch of people on here kept on extolling the virtues of credit cards to you and you were like seriously c'mon everyone drop it I don't want one! (and rightly so, in my opinion). Well, that's a bit like how I feel about reading and writing Japanese right now - I'm not dead against it, but I hope that I will not encounter an avalanche of people trying to convince me that it's pointless to learn speaking and listening unless I learn reading and writing, because I remain unconvinced that I am capable of handling it (I am disabled and neuroatypical so my learning style is not the standard I think). I know you are not saying that what I want to do is pointless, honestly this isn't even really directed at you just a general point for everyone on here to keep in mind, as I have seen some people elsewhere be very condescending and persistent with others who just wanted to speak and listen Japanese. But tbf I think this forum and it's members, you included, are unlikely to behave that way :) Also I like the wanikani crab-dinosaur creature illustration :) I hope that if you want to you can resume learning Japanese again one day too :)
Indeed if you struggle then it's perfectly fine not to learn the writing, I hope my post didn't come accross as an attempt to coerce that. It just came to mind as a means that once helpped me.

I got a final update from my November 2019 PROMARE night attack. It took a very long time because of COVID and also one of the individuals having a warrant out for them which the longer it takes, the worse it'll be. The jury also wanted to sentence them altogether and so as of today, it has been sorted and they finally offered the results.
  • Two of them will be detained for 32 months.
  • One of them has 19 months imprisonment and will be suspended for 18 months.
  • One of them has 18 months order, with supervision for 12 months, plus 150 hours unpaid work for 12 months and a curfew for 3 months.
  • One of them has 19 months imprisonment and will be suspended for 24 months.
There's apparently compensation involved but details are slim on it.

It's a frightening experience no doubt, but it would have been a lot worse if a weapon was involved. I didn't need any form of therapy, but sometimes I remember that moment and it only leaves me with frustration and anger. I'm happy the matter is now resolved as you would think they could just walk away free given how long it's been, but those individuals attacked someone else a week prior to their attack on me so they basically ruined it for themselves.

I haven't watched PROMARE since that night and while I do own it on Blu-ray, I don't know if I can rewatch it without remembering what happened afterwards as I generally have a good visual memory for these things. But we shall see.

Oh man sorry to hear about that experience. Glad you're OK.

It's been so long since I posted. @^_^'@ I do still lurk from time to time but I've been trying to avoid the temptation of buying anime as I've now somehow managed to spawn 2 mini hell beasts, the youngest of which needs to sleep upright which means I am on a weird sleep schedule of 3 hours early at night & 3 more in the morning.

I'm trying to get into programming so I can fund my anime fix again but it's been slow going as I've not really programmed in nearly 20 years (we're talking win 98)! Trying to delve into javascript mainly at the moment with a side of c# & a refresher on html & css ( the latter of which I dont think existed back then.) I'm currently at the overwhelmed, can't program sod all stage (clocked over 80 hours studying so far).

Sadly it looks like I'll have to sell some of my anime collection soon but I've no idea what they're worth and cant find much info or selling history on them. Dunno if anyone can help me valuate or is interested but I'll probably post it here later (stuff like evangelion platinum r1 boxset & ghost in the shell sac ltd ed with the art book).

I'm still clinging on to my hobby for dear life, I'm just stuck with streaming and only 1 or 2 episodes a day. I get sucked in and binge watch if I'm not careful which cocks up my studying!

Hope everyone is doing ok!

I recently finished banana fish which I quite liked. Currently I'm alternating between Psycho Pass Season 3 & Sirius the Jaeger. I have a massive backlog though, think I'm a season behind on Attack on Titan for a start >_<.

Ah OK that's cool I loved the Banana Fish manga and read all the volumes but never watched the anime, I really liked the first season of Psycho-Pass and I feel you about AOT in that I would quite like to watch all of One Piece but it's just so daunting a commitment! Kinda the same thing I guess XP

I try to avoid any anime that goes on for much longer than 26 episodes. There's a few exceptions but only due to me watching them a long time ago and getting into them (dragon ball, full metal alchemist brotherhood).
I don't mind shows that are self contained series wise though (with a definite beginning & end) like sword art online or psycho-pass but other than that I avoid anything lengthy as the time investment is too much, they tend to have way too much filler and I get fed up of the them.
