Revenge of the Simulwatch!

I do like the idea of doing some planning ahead, though I know people wouldn't necessarily be able to commit to anything (nor would they be expected to). The upcoming Anime Limited releases seem like particulalrly good suggestions to me, though it does feel odd to be favouring a particular company (though I suppose they've earned it by picking good releases). I'm looking forward to the releases of Gankutsuo, Escaflowne, Baccano and Gundam so I think it would be fun to do simulwatches for those, although if we did all of them in a row we'd be booked up well into next year (not that I'd mind that). I did also like the idea of a Ghibli simulwatch and I think that'd be worth planning ahead for at some point.

I don't think that it should be seen as a rule that every suggestion should be available streaming, though a reasonable level of availability through physical and/or streaming would make sense as a minimum. It's ideal if both are an option since some people are more likely to find it easier to do one or the other but I don't think streaming should be a necessity since that'd knock quite a lot of good anime off of the list of potential shows.

I'd agree that it'd be best if any poll gave people the option to choose as many shows as they'd watch from the list. It'd be much harder to just pick one option and that'd divide the vote as well.

Speaking of the poll, I'd be okay with the suggestions that DragonBlaze67 made. I would be interested to know how many people might want to give Bubblegum Crisis a go though. Saying that, I'm fairly flexible in general so there's a good chance I'd end up voting for most of the shows (and maybe even watching along with some I'd be less inclined to vote for, if it came down to it).

I'm not sure if this'd be more trouble than it's worth but you could also have an option for "None of the above but I would like to Simulwatch something". It might be interesting as a measure to see what the potential simulwatch audience is like even if we can't realistically please everyone. It'd also rely on people not messing about and choosing that option as well as actual shows (depending on how you'd be carrying out the poll).

If you're going to do upcoming AL shows, streaming has to be a must (although with the exception of Ffumofu and MSG, I think they all are). Their RRPs are far too high for people blind buy for this type of thing...

What about Tiger and Bunny?

You could be right, although there are bound to be exceptions and I think there may be a larger portion of people who could end up in that group in this forum (or at least a larger total number also including people who have seen the shows, since many of the newer releases are older shows). It'd be interesting to see how many people might give Gundam a go as a blind buy (I'd imagine a lot of people have seen another Gundam show and might feel it's worth a risk).

I'd be one of the exceptions, by the way. I have a habit of blind buying quite a few UK releases, although to be fair I tend to read up on things and I'm pretty good at guessing what I might like based on that. I suppose it's also worth noting that I don't really have a lot of money, though more than some and I tend to have less other things to spend my money on as well.

Regarding the Studio Ghibli suggestion, perhaps that can wait until Film 4 next does their 'Ghibli Season'? I know some people here don't have a TV per say, but I believe they have an iPlayer of sorts and that can allow people to join in who haven't bought them all on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Even if you think you'll like it, £90 is a hell of a lot of money. Although they're about £60 + shipping and customs if you order RightStuf's versions from the US.

Film4OD is a rental service. I'd be surprised if it had the Ghibli films on.

Depending on pre-order prices and such there's a good chance it'd be less than £90, perhaps closer to £80. That's still a little high but not so bad given that you're getting more than three times the episodes of a standard single season anime, which could set you back a similar amount. It being a very old show maybe devalues it a bit but then it might could be worth more due to being something of a classic (or at least having historical value and a particular appeal to a certain fandom).

That said, I wouldn't expect anyone to buy it purely for the sake of following along a simulwatch. It'd have to be more a matter of there being enough people who happen to have bought it and would like to do a simulwatch.

As to the Ghibli simulwatch, waiting for the films to be on Film 4 seems reasonable. There's a good chance they'll do a run around the time that When Marnie Was There is released, assuming that's happening in the next year (I don't know what the status is on it off the top of my head). I think it might be worth getting an idea of who'd be interested in it, although it's maybe a bit early to even do that much (unless there happen to be a lot of people who have the films ready to go, I suppose).

Ah no, that's not what I meant. They have a live version of iplayer, or something. I remember seeing it when I was looking at their last Studio Ghibli lineup.

i suggested Outlaw Star as it's streaming and it's also quite cheap on DVD at around £9-10 atm for 26 episodes.

Wait - WHAT?! Where can I get it that cheap? And is it the Anime Limited release?

It was £9.99 on Zavvi last night, but the price seems to have went back up to £23.99.

It is. It was available for a tenner over at zavvi but the price is back up now. It'll probably drop again sometime... in the meantime it's availble on Amazon for £16

There is no longer a release date for Baccano! on Amazon so it could be getting released earlier than expected, I guess.

It doesn't look like this is going anywhere so I just went back a few pages and threw some of the suggestions in a poll. Sorry if yours isn't there, I didn't want to put too many things on there. I left Madoka even though it's not available for legal streaming because I recall quite a few people saying they were interested (though I don't know if it was for the series or the recent releases of the movies).

Multiple choice poll so tick any show you'd watch should it be chosen.

Yeah I put 5 of my picks, so what? Screw you, should have made your own poll!

Aww, no Bubblegum Crisis? I guess I'll end up watching it on my own.

Seems odd that there's only one Crunchyroll show on there, just by coincidence I guess. I think most people said they'd like to see something that's not too new so that's probably a factor.

It's a shame it doesn't seem to tell you how many respondents there are (unless I missed that), though I suppose it's not essential.

Yeah I looked it up but it's not available for streaming and the physical release isn't that cheap.

Yeah that's too bad... Especially since they give us the number of votes, which is kind of useless (I think we're old enough to have mastered the art of addition, thanks)

I hope people don't dismiss shows just because they've never heard of them, the simulwatch is a good occasion to discover something new.
