K-ON!! (1-24) - 9/10

I was going to play this safe and roll out the 8, but what the hell, I'm feeling bold today.

For a show that's supposed to be all fluff and air, K-ON!! isn't half poignant. Right from the start there's a hint of melancholy to proceedings as four of the five main characters begin their final year of high school, leaving the fifth to contemplate her final year without them. And as the show progresses that sweet pain of poignancy intensifies (though never dominates the light-hearted tone) until it reaches its climax during that wonderful scene following the school festival, and again at the encore of the final episode. And yet K-ON!!'s emotional catharsis is never overplayed; it's as subtle as the show's comedy, never loud or obnoxious and timed to perfection. How many series set in high school even deal with graduation? Somehow it even made me kind of nostalgic for my own long-past school days, even though it was not a time I remember fondly.

And then there's animation. How do Kyoto Animation produce something that looks this good on a TV budget? There's a scene in the latter part of the series where Yui is posing in front of a mirror trying to find the right hairstyle, and it's so simple but so well animated and charming. K-ON!! is not a flashy-looking show but there's always movement, even if it's just subtle gestures that other studios wouldn't bother with.

Onto the specials and then the movie. Yay.
You just hit the nail on the head. Especially with the nostalgia part.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation II - Lovers

Good things:
- all the new footage and the battles look great;
- they fixed some of the holes and jumps in the plot.
Bad things:
- they ruined the Neo Hong Kong arc, which is one of my favourite arcs in all anime;
- they ruined the Dakar arc as well;
- there is much less tension about Quattro / Char;
- they cut a lot of important dialogues.
A nice movie, but it lacks the depth of the series.

Score: 7 / 10

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation III - Love Is the Pulse of the Stars

Good things:
- finally we see Sayla (YES! YYEESS!! YYYEEESSS!!!);
- Haman stole the movie, she totally rules here;
- all the new footage and the battles look great.
Bad things:
- it's too focused on battles;
- they changed the final (blasphemy!);
- the story is watered down.
It seems like Tomino made these movies just for money and to "please" the otaku fandom, without caring much about the integrity of his work (not surprising since he hated making the Zeta series). I would have much preferred if he gave them the same treatment as the 0079 movies.
Even the GREATNESS of Sayla and Haman is not enough to raise this movie above average.

Score: 6 / 10

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: The Fading Light of Zeon

0083 is my favourite of the 3 Gundam OVAs from the 90's. Too bad this "movie" butchered that series, everything got flattened. Gato was a total badass, now he is flat. Kou was a badass in his own way (half a puppet and half a stubborn non-newtype), here he's flat. Kelly Layzner was a great character, here we barely see him. Most of the tension is cut away. It doesn't suck on its own, it "simply" lost of the qualities of the OVAs. Only positive thing: Keith is almost absent.
Ah, almost forgot: Nina Purpleton is the number 1 contender for the title of "biggest b**ch in the universe" (the title holder is Minmay, of course).

Score: 5.5 / 10

The Adventures of 8Man / My Romcom SNAFU

A surprisingly fresh take on the familiar 'anime highschool' schtick, elevated mainly by the central relationship between its curmudgeonly protagonist and his equally cold-blooded female foil. The drama remains slightly blunted as the show plays it mainly for laughs, but it's shot through with a pleasing cynicism, sharp dialogue and some of the truest observation of teenage hierarchy since John Hughes was at the peak of his power.

Not one to revolutionise the genre, but certainly good company while it lasts.

I think this is doing the show at least a small dis-service - the only characters that I think fall into this category are Hina (and even she gets her own moment or two), Saika, and Zaimokusa. I felt like the comedy was only there to contrast against the primary goal of the show, which was to provide genuine commentary. The subtlety of bittersweet scenes such as Hachiman and Yukino's discussion in the club room after the cultural festival - specifically the one moment in the entire series where Hachiman seems to lack internal certainty of his place totally alone and outside of society or genuine relationships with other people is unmatched within the genre, for me.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below Agatha Christie - 5/10

While Shinkai should be lauded for doing something different with this movie (even if it's aping Ghibli), I prefer his more contemplative works (Voices, 5cm). Whenever he introduces plot (this, Place Promised) I find my attention wandering. I think he's exceptionally talented at conveying melancholy and a sense of yearning, but not a good storyteller. The movie plods along for nearly two hours, jumping from plot point to plot point but giving me no real reason to care about any of it, nor the characters particularly. Asuna is likeable enough but it seems as though she's just tagging along with the teacher and spends most of the film needing to be rescued. The teacher is a potentially more interesting character but we get very little of who he is outside of a brief flashback that failed to make me invest in his plight. Ugh, I don't know. It took me several viewings to finish this film, such was my boredom, so my thoughts are muddled. TL;DR: I think it has some interesting elements (such as the themes of death and acceptance of death) but it does not hold together very well.

Avatar The last Airbender season 3
9/10
(I reviewed the previous 2 seasons so i'm going to review the last aswell. Only makes sense)
A great conclusion to an epic cartoon! Great fight scenes, great animation and a gripping story. Great stuff!

Avatar: The last Airbender (as a whole)
11/10!!!
THIS. CARTOON. IS. PERFECT!!!!!
I haven't seen anything this epic in a while! Everything is flawless! The characters are all very likable, the story is extremely engaging, the animation is consistently great and the fight scenes are loads of fun! I'm not afraid to say this but, this is better than alot of animes I've seen recently. If you haven't seen this show already, GO AND WATCH IT!!!!

Im ready for The Legend Of Korra now :) Which i think airs over here on the 7th.

It really is a great show. Though it's been ages since I watched it, some of the moments have still stuck with me. The animation is beautiful and the show has some of the funniest moments I've seen! I may have to consider buying it to relive it all again. A favourite of my childhood that would still hold up today beyond nostalgia :D

Yeah, it was probably a poor choice of words (teaches me to write last thing at night), but I do think it holds back a little more than it could have done, which is why I'd rate it as a good show rather than a great one. There's something to be said for lightness of touch, but I would have appreciated it if they'd plumbed the depths of neurosis just a little further.

We have been held ransom to the numerical demands of this thread for too long and I think we should cast off such yokes of imperialist oppression.

The Professional Golgo 13
7.5/10
Wow. I wasn't expecting this to be that good

First thing i must mention is the animation. It was REALLY good for 1983! Movement was fluid, backgrounds were nicely drawn and action scenes were well choreographed.

The story was pretty good and it got you pumped up for the action scenes. The build up to Golgos fight with Gold and Silver was pretty cool. Also all the action scenes here were pretty good. His fight with Snake was one of my favorite scenes. Snake was probably one of my fave characters! He was sooo damn creepy yet so damn strong! Golgo, on the other hand, was pretty bland.

2 things i didn't like about this movie are that it drags on a little in the middle, and the unnecessary sex scenes. After killing someone he usually goes and has sex with a woman. Why? Its annoying.

Overall a fun action packed movie. Check it out

Yes, on one hand this series is not on the level of Ressentiment and Welcome to the NHK (or even this season's Aku no Hana) from that point of view, but I think it remained true to itself in large part by always offering a touch of sadness to go along with its "happy endings". The discussion between the main characters and Rumi in the middle episode 7 is brutally honest regardless of the fact that things work out for her in the end, for instance, and I wasn't left with the impression by the end of the show that Yukino has become any more socially capable or any less pressured by things such as her sister's very existence.

Yeah, Avatar is awesome, I love it (the less said about the abomination of a film adaptation the better though). I watched the first season of Legend of Korra, and while it was good it did feel a little rushed in the end and obviously can't quite live up to the same standards as Avatar. I'm just gonna wait until it's all out on DVD before I watch the other seasons.

Black rock shooter

To start off with, this series got to me like chaos head , the first half makes you think it's going to be about something deep but................... Well if chaos head, second half disappointed you, this series will do the same because I honestly thought it was going to do something with the fights that was in the world where they was fighting like how they was feeling while dealing with there emotions,

The animations nice
The story gets a lil complicated but sometimes you know where it's going,

I think I should like this series but it kinda falls on it's ass from time to time,

I was really getting invested it to some of the scenes but after one thing led to another which was disappointing and I feel I should like this series, some parts I do some I don't,

6.5/10

Guy: Double Target (1988 & 1992)

While rightly labelled an 'adult' release, this two part OAV about an amoral pair of outer-space treasure hunters is light enough on sexual content and interested enough in its actual story to give it a modicum of credibility.

The production owes an obvious debt to Go Nagai, both in the nicely executed character art and the gory demon-battering that actually makes up the bulk of its running time. Following central duo Guy and Reika's attempt to spring a missing scientist from a prison planet, the first installment has a rather warped approach to its tone - the light hearted banter between our two heroes being somewhat at odds with the graphic mutilation happening elsewhere. The combination of explicit sex and bloodletting was presumably an attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Overfiend anime, but mercifully the two were never really combined in the same scene, and the film did hold my attention enough to feel like there was artistic intent to it beyond mere titillation.

The second part, in which our heroes get mixed up with a strange cult, all but seems to confirm this, distancing itself from any pornographic ambition by cutting out the sex almost entirely.

Had it continued on in this fashion, it's interesting to wonder if this might have turned into a decent little adventure series, but (despite ending with a 'to be continued' tag), I don't think they ever made any further episodes. As it is, the spark is there, but the two parts aren't well enough written to have the sort of crossover appeal of Toshiro Maeda's output, and will probably hold little interest outwith OAV collectors.

While I don't think there's anything massively offensive in either film, it's worth noting that there is a brief rape scene in the first part, and it was apparently nasty enough to gain some notoriety upon the show's original release in the west.

Sol bianca

It's not a bad series but it's not brilliant either, il just say it's between okay and good,

The animation fine
The characters are average
The story is average

It's just a okay series but it was good

7/10

Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below / Jounrey To Agatha;

To be honest, I lost all patience with the movie (something that was slowing but surely being sapped by the movie's want to jump around like mexican jumping beans on crack) the moment it started to ape the whole "hair cutting" routine from Princess Mononoke and THEN the movie had the gall to Kill the cute kitty to establish some sort of story...mechanic, maybe?

Oh sod it all, I don't care, I'd be more pissed about it if I paid for it instead of it being a LoveFilm rental but as is, I'm just Hans Moleman, I'd probably have wasted those two hours anyway.

So yeah; Rent.

This series is both good and bad

The main male lead is annoying, no really this guy is annoying as hell, theres no emotion In him at all he feels like he's part of the background at times,

The animations nice and the story can be good but sometimes it kinda makes me go * wait what*

It sort of feels like a gibli film put in to a series,

It had it's fun parts and it's good parts and it's what ever parts,

I liked it in most parts

7/10

Kids on the Slope - 8/10

A moving tale of broship and romance. And jazz, of course, which primarily serves as glue that binds the characters together and perhaps as a metaphor for those tumultuous teenage years: both are unpredictable and full of contrasting emotions. I was particularly impressed by the genuine and believable friendship between the two lead characters, and also the portrayal of their insecurities, which affected each of them in different ways.

The two primary female characters were not as strong, though, and I wasn't at all sold on the relationship between Jun and Yurika. Probably this was a casualty of adapting a 9-volume manga into a 12-episode TV series, something that also had a negative effect on the pacing: since the series covers a period of 2-3 years, months pass between episodes, and it feels especially rushed towards the end.

But it's still a great show despite the flaws. It brought a manly tear to my eye on more than one occasion, and for that to have happened it must've done a lot right.

I totally agree with you here, if you placed importance on the order of these two. Kaoru and Sen's friendship is the rock that the show is supported by.

I think that's inarguably the case. Any doubts about that would be blown away by the events of the last two episodes.

It's sort of amusing that a woman wrote one of the most genuinely compelling male friendships I've seen in anime :p
