Oblivion Island - 7/10

Nice little film. Thought some of the CG was a little clunky at times but for the most part it was good. It did take me a while to get used to it being CG tbh. As much as i love pixars stuff, the standard in Japan just isn't there yet. In 2D terms there are streets ahead and they showed that with some really nice 2D backgrounds early in the film, although this did make the CG characters look out of place and seemed strange since it was nesrly all 3D but once on the island they seem to stick with the CG which I preferred. I've mentioned before but I just think it sticks out like a sore thumb when they mix it.

The story was basically Alice in Wonderland Japanese style and it reminded me of why I love anime so much, they can throw stuff into stories, that's clever, weird and unexpected. Most of all, something we don't find in western animation.

M.D. Geist (Directors Cut)- 6.5/10

I think I'm getting back into the swing of watching 80's/90's anime. Which is why I sorta enjoyed this.
Violence - check
Unnecessary gory violence - check
story that makes no sense - check
crap dub - check
dub that's that bad its laughable - check
and that's why I enjoyed it

Blood Reign - Curse of the Yoma - 7/10

Gonna agree with Animefreak here, it was good to watch. I think having the the history between the main bad guy and good guy characters helped. You got some backstory which can be a rarity in 90's OVAs. I thought the action was pretty decent too.

Black Butler II

6/10

What a disappointing follow up this was :(

Season one departed from the manga early on but still managed to be a quality show in it's own right and, in my opinion, equally as good as the manga in doing its own thing. So I found it rather disheartening that II didn't manage to maintain the same levels of quality, despite being a shorter season. At times there was such a departure from the tone of the series that it was quite jarring, the comedy became more over the top and slapstick-ish and there was less focus to the darker plot elements.

I did absolutely love the first episode of this season and real high hopes for how it would pan out. Alois and Claude were terrific additions and offered a different dynamic to Ciel and Sebastian. I wasn't overly keen on the Ciel losing his memories plot line but it wasn't inherently bad and could've worked fine. What did annoy me was that suddenly Lau and Ran Mao weren't dead and it was explained with a throwaway line in the last episode that Sebastian had simply let them get away. Aside form this obviously not actually happening in season 1, let's just say it did happen, why would Sebastian have done this? What would he gain by doing so? He's a demon he doesn't care if people live or not and he had been ordered by Ciel to kill them so not doing so would be a breach of contract. I didn't like the ending Ciel now a demon does nothing for me and just arbitrarily left the story open ended, guess they'd already blown their load with the season 1 ending teasing Sebastian eating his soul at last so didn't want to do it again,

I'll give it points for Alois, Olé, Alois in a dress, Hannah stripping down and a brilliant first episode.

I'd love to see BBC do a live action series of Black Butler (not that it'd ever happen), but wouldn't it be great? A British cast in a 6 episode series about Victorian England with dark supernatural goings on and a slight detective slant at times.

Ushio and tora

This series is from the 90s and I'l say it's fun to watch the animations old but the relationship between tora and ushio is complicated at times,

I liked this series and thought it was fun to watch

8/10

It seems like a high score but hey I liked it

Naruto: Series 3 - 8/10

Still enjoying it, thought it was great to get some back story on Gara. I actually feel sorry for the guy. Looking forward to starting Series 4 tomorrow.

Kurau Phantom Memories

This being a Bones production, I went in with some expectations. I was expecting well-developed, if slightly off-kilter characters, which it delivered. I was also expecting a complex story told with as few cues as possible. For better or worse, it delivered on that front too. Music was excellent as well, with Akino Arai’s “Natsukashii Umi” being a highlight.

Pacing is on the slow side, yet the story stays clear of tedium. There’s hardly any filler, no recap episode midway through, now sideways diversions. The story progression stays logical and realistic throughout. Plot points you think are going to be filler — the introduction of Yvonne, for instance — serve as primers for new twists in the tale.

All of this is buoyed by the relationship between Kurau and Christmas. In trying to describe it, I find myself at a loss for words and so must defer to Faye Dunaway’s character from Chinatown:

Minds out of the gutter boys, it’s not like that. But given the context of Christmas’s origin it’s a close approximation. Regardless, the love and devotion these two show each other, their sheer selflessness through thick and thin, certainly places them in the top tier of anime couples. And it’s important that this was done right, because this is what sets off the events in the story. No Kurau/Christmas, no Kurau Phantom Memories.

I have a few issues however. Kurau herself is a dullard, and a stubborn one at that. In the heat of battle, the frequently insists she is fine when those around her can all see she is out on her feet and moments away from a coma. This is bound to become grating, which it does. And then there’s the name “Christmas”? Really? First thing that came to mind for me was Denise Richards in The World Is Not Enough — not a good connotation, not good at all. Finally, for all the closure presented at the end, the origin and nature of the Rynax remains vague and underdeveloped, which is peculiar given how central to the plot they are.

In the end we have an ambitious tale with themes of familial relationships and the ethics of scientific research, competently handled. That will be a 7/10 then.

If nothing else, it had the best outtakes this side of Berserk. Ushio imitating Elvis was classic.

I last saw this 15 years ago, and what really stood out for me was the hero. He gave the impression of being neither the best nor the worst in his class. Instead of being superpowered, he was competent and well-prepared.

Some quick comments on various stuff I watched in the past weeks and had no time to write before:

Redline

I miss 2 things about this movie: first, I would have liked to watch it at the cinema and not at home; second, some more story. Besides that, holy crap what a stylish blast!

Score: 8 / 10

HeatGuy J

Some nice characters (Daisuke and Kyoko), some average characters (J and the other Aurora brother), some ruined characters (Clair). The story was decent but left me unimpressed.

Score: 6 / 10

Highlander: Vengeance

Kawajiri does Highlander, far from being his best work.

Score: 6 / 10

Blade of the Immortal

I like samurai series with a nice story, especially when the characters are a shade of grey and not the usual good vs bad. Until episode 11 I thought this was a great series and deserved a 8.5, but the ending sucked. Guess I'll need to read the manga.

Score: 7.5 / 10

Big Windup!

I've never liked baseball, the few times I tried to watch a game I always got bored (quite strange since I love almost all sports). First episodes really grabbed my attention, they explained a lot of details and tactics, so they were really interesting. After that the series started to drop and drop and drop. I thought that Captain Tsubasa would maintain its record for the longest match ever till the end of times, but I've been proved wrong. In my opinion the long match here is much more of a torture than the Endless 8. I'm good and I give it a 6 just for the great first episodes.

Score: 6 / 10

Devil May Cry

I thought that Devil May Claymore was just a decent show to kill time. The overall story was totally subpar, at least there were some fine episodes here and there.

Score: 6 / 10

Brain Powerd

Tomino trolled quite hard with this show, this is the main reason why I liked it. The story is full of holes and inconsistencies, but there are some great moments plus the usual great female characters by Tomino.

Score: 7 / 10

Baoh

I remember watching it on TV something like 15 years ago and thinking it was good. I must have been totally drunk! Or maybe I'm mistaking the show name for another one. Wasted time and wasted money (even the 3 euro I paid is too much), at least it's short.

Score: 5 / 10

Ristorante Paradiso

While watching the first episode my jaw dropped to the floor: the pastry chef in this series is called Teo! And even looks like me. This is enough to make this THE BEST SERIES EVER IN THE UNIVERSE!!!

Score: 11 / 10

I was warned that this was now the best review on the site, it didn't disappoint! :D

Shamanic princess

The character designs in this series is bad, like really bad in my opinion, there also forgettable, in fact the whole thing was forgettable and boring,

4/10

Watched ep 1 of ruin explorers ................... It's adorable or should I say Fam is adorable I just love her

Ruin explorers

Pretty damned good for a 4 ep series, I don't know why this didn't get a 26 ep series,

Yeah it's a oldie but a good oldie I liked the dub for Fam I think it suits her to a T and she is very very cute and adorable,

This reminds me of slayers in fact it's almost like slayers, maybe that's why they didn't turn it in to a longer series,

But I think I prefer this to slayers,

The animations not bad
The characters are likeable * Fam is so cute*
the story's simple but enjoyable and again that's because of the characters
The dub isn't bad

I really like this series

8/10

Kampfer OVAs

Pretty much the same as the series

7/10

I take it as you agree with what I wrote.

Another couple of comments:

Otaku no Video

This is some of the best anime trolling ever. I laughed hard while watching all the faked real interviews. Plus OTAKING!!!
I also appreciated all the references, besides the ubiquitous Gundam and Macross, there were also Future Boy Conan and Ōgon Bat (but they did not show Dr. Nazō, which is a shame).

Score: 9 / 10

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation - Heir to the Stars

Good things:
- they fixed the story pacing (all the holes and jumps in the original series are what prevents it to get a 10/10 in my book);
- the newly animated segments and all the battles are simply gorgeous.
Bad things:
- they cut the part with Sayla (shame on you!!!);
- they cut a lot of dialogues, which were the best thing of the original series;
- all the changeovers from old animation and new animation are too much noticeable, considering the amount of new footage I think they could have remade everything.
I still prefer the series, but this is a very nice watch as well. It seems too focused on the fanservice (battles and battles and mechas and battles), if they focused more on the character development this could have been great.

Score: 8 / 10

K-ON!! (1-24) - 9/10

I was going to play this safe and roll out the 8, but what the hell, I'm feeling bold today.

For a show that's supposed to be all fluff and air, K-ON!! isn't half poignant. Right from the start there's a hint of melancholy to proceedings as four of the five main characters begin their final year of high school, leaving the fifth to contemplate her final year without them. And as the show progresses that sweet pain of poignancy intensifies (though never dominates the light-hearted tone) until it reaches its climax during that wonderful scene following the school festival, and again at the encore of the final episode. And yet K-ON!!'s emotional catharsis is never overplayed; it's as subtle as the show's comedy, never loud or obnoxious and timed to perfection. How many series set in high school even deal with graduation? Somehow it even made me kind of nostalgic for my own long-past school days, even though it was not a time I remember fondly.

And then there's animation. How do Kyoto Animation produce something that looks this good on a TV budget? There's a scene in the latter part of the series where Yui is posing in front of a mirror trying to find the right hairstyle, and it's so simple but so well animated and charming. K-ON!! is not a flashy-looking show but there's always movement, even if it's just subtle gestures that other studios wouldn't bother with.

Onto the specials and then the movie. Yay.

Mad bull 34

Another oldie but a good and crazy with loads of violence and a few nudy bits there and there, I couldn't watch this in dub so I watched it in sub,

It was crazy and good that's what I have to say about it,

8/10

Heavens lost property movie

This is about a characters that was supposed to be in the series but got knocked in to a movie and for the first hour it shows you what this character is doing during the time the series was going though but seeing it though her, kinda got on my nerves I just wish they put this character inherent series then we wouldn't had to go though a hour of rewatching the whole thing but though her, but the last 30 mins was alright,

But like I said this should of been put in to the series,

7.5/10
