Macros Plus - 9/10

This has been sitting on my shelf for about 3 years now but after listening to ANN Casts Revenge of the 80's and then 90's, I thought it was about time I watched it.

I have been hoping for years that there would be a gem from the late 80's or 90's that I hadn't seen yet. I found it.

Despite Zac's less than ringing endorsement on the aforementioned podcast, I would seriously recommend seeking out the earlier 'Do You Remember Love?' film if you enjoyed Plus and haven't already seen it.

Thanks for the tip Professor Irony.

I had taken a look at this but was just slightly put off by the fact no dub has been done, apart from an edited version (with 25mins cut) according to ANN. I still might check it out though but the wife won't watch it without a dub, which restricts my time for viewing. I'll let you know if/when I get round to it, if I can find it first.

Ah, fair does. I think an uncut version of the dub does exist, but I've heard it was a very poor effort, done on the cheap in Hong Kong. Haven't actually seen it myself though, so it could at least be worth investigating, even if it might take a bit of finding.

Sword of the Stranger (Rewatch)

I have a friend who's an action aficionado and who thinks that the Street Fighter 2 movie is the single best anime title ever. And I've never forgotten his reason for it being that way. He said that the movie featured great action with just the right amount of story to tie it all together.

Sword of the Stranger has similar aspirations and I'm sure he'd approve of the result.

We have Kotaro, a boy on the run with his faithful dog, who bumbles upon a nameless ronin. Nameless is forced to defend his impromptu ward from the pursuers, while piecing together just why there is a pursuit in the first place. This story aspect I'll admit is handled way better than it was in Street Fighter 2. For one thing we are actually made to care for (or at least understand) the main characters as they find themselves battling impossible odds between two megalomaniacal factions. Secondly, the bond between the main characters isn't forced by lazy writers but rather nurtured into place as they gradually warm up to each other. Thirdly, the bad guys are clear in their motives and just as prone to human folly. Instead of constantly posturing, they react realistically as circumstances dictate (panicking when things aren't going their way and breathing sighs of relief otherwise). That the bad guys are also plotting against one another also proves to be a major plus point.

But let’s not forget that all of what I’ve just described serves only to join together the violent bits. And I've yet to see swordfights done better than in here. Bones obviously had a decent budget to work with and it shows. Fights are well staged, well choreographed, and such a joy to behold with with no constant rapid fire editing; their purity is thus preserved. And they are graphic, but then you would expect all those sharp and pointy things objects on show to leave more than a few scuff marks. Speaking of damage, the depictions of bleeding are accurately modelled according to where a character receives a strike. Previously bleeding was bleeding as far as animation was concerned. Not so here. Bleeding varies anywhere from capillary seeping to full-on arterial spay: it’s a blood spatter expert’s dream come true.

In terms of AV presentation, SotS's colour palette is vivid on blu-ray, with no colour seepage and no motion artifacts even with the most frenetic movements. As far as sound is concerned…the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack convinces. The opening rainstorm had me shivering (though maybe that’s because it was cold outside when I watched it). There’s a constant sense of spatial awareness, whether a character is indoors, camping in the forest or out in the open. Of course the fights benefit most from this as the effects are thrown in all directions while remaining cohesive all the time. Summary: this movie should be seen and heard.

Bones has further cemented their reputation as an anime studio with this title. Here’s hoping they always remain true to their young irreverant upstart approach to making anime. A well-earned 8.5/10.

Phantom quest Corp

To start off the main lead in this is sassy and to me that's sexy.

The Animations a lil bit old but I liked it

Theres no backgrounds on the characters so There as bland as cardboard,

It's a 7/10

Battle angel

I think I saw this on sci-fi years ago and the part where the dude walks up this pip and falls re winded me of it, man good times good times.

Another oldie and was ok to watch, it brings back memory's,

6.5/10

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple Part 1
6.5/10

Wow. What a disappointment.

First I'll star off with the things i liked about the series, seeing as there are more things i dislike.

Some of the characters were decent and had some interesting development. Seeing Kenichi start off from a loser into a fighter was nice. The masters themselves were quite funny and fun to watch. The fight scenes were impressive. Kenichis fight with Takeda was probably the best in the collection.

Now onto the things i didn't like

My main beef with the series is that, for a series about fighting, there wasn't alot of it. Fair enough you have to develop the characters, but does it really need to take so many episodes to do so!? Secondly, it seemed to be focused more on comedic episodes, like Kenichis sister coming into the dojo and them having a day at the beach, than episodes about fighting! Infact, it didn't seem to feel like a show about fighting all that much!

I think another problem i had is that, last year i watched a Martial Arts anime called Baki The Grappler. I loved it to bits! It had great fight scenes, an engaging plot, fantastic music and good characters, all with good development. SO when i heard about Kenichi i thought i would of liked it like i did Baki, seeing as it was about martial Arts. Sadly, i was wrong. But its my own fault really, going into this without any research on the show and expecting it to be the same, so I'll admit that much.

Overall, a decent series. If you want a good Martial Arts anime, go watch Baki The Grappler. I might get the second collection of Kenichi when the price goes down

It wasnt a yaoi And it didn't bother me, it had a crappy story and bad dubbing.

Blood reign

This oldie was actully good it had that ninja scroll feel to it and I think it should of been at least 12 eps long for me to actully get in to the story but instead I'm given a 2 ep series but I'm not complaining,

7/10

Yu-Gi-Oh: Bond Beyond Time
7/10
Got this for free at the recent MCM expo with the goodie bag. It was actually pretty decent! It was quite nostalgic actually, seeing Yugi Moto after so many years! I used to love Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid. I hav'nt seen The other two guys before, so i didnt care much for them. Especially Jaden, what an absolute loser!

What i never really realised as a kid is that they waffle SOOOO much! Once someone has activated a monster or something, another person will be like "Well i activate my trap card, that brings back my dragon which has more attack points now, i can also do" etc etc. It's actually kinda funny!

The overall story was quite interesting, and its length was decent. Im glad it didnt go on any further than it did, because it might of been a little jarring after a while. The animation was also pretty decent. Probably my favourite aspect was the character designs. They all look pretty cool.

The only complain i have for this is the dub. I really REALLY hate 4kids. They bang out all these really cheesy lines. They don't suit the characters at all! "This dragon really takes the cake" "yeah, looks like he ate it all to".......Really? That's is supposed to be funny? But i can't complain much. I did get it for free anyway.

Overall, a nice, cheesy little fun movie that had quite a good amount of nostalgia. Give it a shot!

Metropolis 8/10 (re-watch)

1st time round I didn't care much for this, but I saw it on Amazon and thought, I quite fancy giving it a go. I certainly enjoyed it more this time, maybe I knew what to expect. I'll get the negative comment out of the way first. I don't like CG mixed with 2D animation, it just looks odd and in the beginning of the movie there's quite a bit of it but its not as heavily used thereafter. If you've seen Asto Boy you'll know what to expect with the characte designs and they are animated brilliantly.

I noticed that the dub was especially good, think it stood out so much coz I have been watching a lot of 90's stuff

As for the story I liked it, especially the crime noir feel it gave me whenever Detective Shinsaku Ban and Pero were on screen and its Cyber Punk which I really liked, add the friendship between Kenichi and Tima and jealousy of Rock over Duke Reds obsession with Tima and it was all there for a very good film.
