TRSI Announcement #1 - Galaxy Angel - Blu-ray only

Darn. That's torpedoes that one for me. Had it been a DVD release, I'd have added it to the shopping list. Might seem a bit backwards, but I'm twitchy about importing region A BDs.

Crunchyroll has a new DVD & BD line (all titles listed for both formats currently, and all will be dubbed):
-Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
-Berserk (2016)
-Twin Star Exorcists
-Free!
-Gintama
-Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches
-Big Order
-Myriad Colours Phantom World

I have concerns about this endeavour:
Will this lead them to only focus on titles they can get home video rights for?
Will they actively reject shows they can't get home video rights for?
With Anime Limited getting an effective monopoly over titles, why shouldn't I be nervous about this?

I get that this site's general line is "AL good, Manga bad, MVM indifferent", but I must say I'm concerned about AL potentially excluding other companies from getting these titles. No competition can only be bad. And I don't know if AL can handle this many titles. Some poor title is bound to get screwed by the whole thing.

Odd comment given that it's a Crunchyroll announcement. If it lays your concerns to rest, Berserk (2016) has already been announced in the UK by Universal.

Out of interest, did they specifically say this would be North America only? I'd imagine that'd be the case but it'd be interesting if they had international plans.

I've seen quite a few comments worrying that this could cause problems for Sentai since they might not be able to get titles, I'm not sure why that would be the case. As I understand it, Sentai license things and then sublicense streaming to Crunchyroll. Even if it doesn't quite work that way, I couldn't imagine Crunchyroll picking up physical rights to every show. It could mean more competition for some shows but I don't think it would make a massive difference overall. It's quite possible that I'm missing something though.

It's kind of an interesting list of titles, I've heard mixed comments about most of those shows so I do wonder how they'll perform. I could see Kabaneri and Berserk doing reasonably well by virtue of being very well known and hyped, even if they're not loved by everyone. I've mostly heard good things about Twin Star Exorcists and Yamada-kun but I'm not sure how that'll translate into sales since they seem like the kind of titles that could easily be forgotten. I'd say Free is a fairly safe bet, though it'll be interesting to see how many people who picked up the DVD release will pick up a new one. Myriad Colours seems to have been middling and disappointed fans of the studio that made it. I don't recall hearing anything positive about Big Order at all.

Gintama will probably be the most interesting, it certainly has it's fans but I wonder how well that'll translate into sales. I'd imagine it'll depend on the releases. I really can't see the show being released over here but I suppose you never know.

It should be very interesting to see how this works in the long run, I guess the success of their first titles will be a big factor. I'd imagine it might be a while before some of these are out too and the ones they could probably release earlier seem to be the ones I'm less confident about.

Wasn't Crunchyroll on the production committee for Kiznaiver? I'm surprised they didn't announce that one (also, Ojisan to Marshmallow, I guess).

I don't think it'll change too much, they'll probably continue to get the usual streaming but pick up physical rights for a few shows. I suppose I'd be a little concerned that the money they spend on physical rights might eat into their international streaming budget and potentially result in less shows for us but hopefully that won't be the case (and if they make more money from this they'll have more to spend too).

I could see Anime Limited getting the first opportunity to pick up shows from Crunchyroll but I don't think it would stop others from getting shows. As you say, Anime Limited probably couldn't release everything so I expect there'll still be opportunities for the other companies. I suppose they could end up with a distribution deal similar to the Funimation one, which would at least reduce the work needed for each release.

You're probably right that we'll miss out on some titles here but I think that may be unavoidable due to the nature of our market.

Very glad we finally got confirmation Viz is re-releasing JoJo on BD after Warner's travesty of a release. Definite pick up for me, unless it finds a UK release. Given it's Viz, there's a good chance it could be Kaze, which I'd avoid like the plague for a show I love as much as JoJo. The possibility of a redub is interesting and not something I really expected.

Oops, I missed that one. I guess that explains why Crunchyroll aren't releasing it.

Great news from Crunchyroll.
But I just hope it will not be "Sentai Type" release, aka 1-2 disc on 1 amaray case and nothing else.
If that's the case, it's useless... for me.

Based on the titles, they have. I hope it is that.

CEs for Gintama... Ouch.

Re: Crunchyroll

I'm honestly fine with the Discotek style packaging. That is a slipcover, a Blu-ray case with a couple discs and a couple extras. Stuff like Gintama would work better in standard edition sets than collector's. Same goes for Twin Star Exorcist and Big Order.

As much as I am the one person in the world who likes Twin Star Exorcists, I have to wonder how a CE for AL will do. Especially given it's 50 episodes.

I like the show and not even I could commit to that.

I think Anime Limited should now consider just making normal releases for certain shows, because they have too many unreleased titles and giving them all collector's treatment is causing more delays and more backlog to sort out. Heck they still haven't even finished the Mai Mai Miracle kickstarter which was backed 2 years ago.

As I said in the main AL thread, im analysing my spending habits and I've come to the realisation that I'd be fine with just standard editions for a lot of the shows from them, so I'm in agreement here. Not every show requires a £40-50 release, not every show deserves that tbh.

Indeed. I would be happy on some AL titles (with Twin Star Exorcists as an example) having Part 1 with an artbox and artbook (a la Gundam) and then just having amaray's for the other parts.

Some interesting developments. I'll definitely keep an eye on the Gintama release, I always assumed that would remain physical release-less. JoJo and more Gundam is also great news, though I expected them going in.

Sentai Filmworks Announcement #1 - English Dubs for 7 different titles:
  • Gate
  • Monster Musume
  • Ushio & Tora
  • Amagi Brilliant Park
  • Food Wars
  • Himouto Umaru-chan
  • Is it Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?

After last year's surprise, the 7 dubbed shows were the only new announcements for Sentai.

Vertical's panel is up soon.

Glad to see Sentai is dubbing those 7 as they're ones I've been interested in watching especially Food Wars and Is it Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?.

Vertical Announcement:
