Neon Genesis Evangelion

Perhaps a good way of watching the series might be like this...

Episodes 1 - 25
End of Evangelion
Episode 26

I like how this thread turned into a RahXephon vs Evangelion battlefield.
Refuse to get drawn into one. For two reasons.
1- not the topic of the thread. Eva was what was asked about, therefore that's what I'm talking about
2-

or what it's worth, I enjoyed the first ep of Evangelion more than the first ep of RaXephon
First Two episodes of Eva ROCK, but can you stomach the emoness of the next two.

The trouble with the last two episodes of the series is that they're trying to be too clever for their own good. Death and Rebirth sort of falls under that as well but it seems like more of a cash in than anything else. End of Eva certainly does have flaws but it's a lot easier to watch and be able to enjoy than the last two episodes of the series.

Throughout the series is a constant build up and just as it's reached it's climax it breaks into phychobabble that has to be watched several times to gain a decent perspective of what it's all about. It was a good end in some ways, it cut down to what the series was actually about at the heart and that's Shinji. After seeing it once though I found it hard to go back to watch it again because it does get rather monotonous after about 20 minutes of being sprayed with imagery and cryptic narration.

End of Eva has imagery relating to Shinji but it's cut down greatly and in my opinion is presented a lot better than in the two part conclusion (the live action shots were a nice touch I thought). It's the action packed finale most people were expecting. The last two episodes break the mould and are different but how it was presented could have been a lot more interesting.

True, and NGE is what I was originally discussing, if i'd know I was feeding a slavering fanboi troll rather than having a bit of lighthearted banter, I wouldn't have risen to the bait, I thought all the people on this forum were above that sort of thing, obviously not everyone is. :?

Still, enough of that, it's over, the end, move along, nothing to see here.

... the way I watched it was as follows:

Episodes 1 -26 (21-24 OA) to see it in its original form.

Then ahead of watching End of Evangelion put on episodes 21-24 only this time viewing the xtended DC versions as the extra scenes tie in closely with the film.

That's pretty much how I watch it now I've got the tin. :D

All 26 originals, then the directors cuts, then EoE. Even though I prefer EoE to the original eps 25 and 26 , it doesn't mean I dislike the original ending, heck, to be honest in a strange way EoE makes more sense if you've seen the original eps. :D

I liked both the endings (original 2 ending episodes and EoE). They work on different levels, so I appreciate them for different things.

Anno created something that no-one else had done before and the 'psycho-babble' that confounds some people was what I found eventually to be extremely enlightening. I like that, where I can learn something from what I watch.

Wow, guys, thanks for the advice and stuff! ^_^

Is there any word on the live action Evangelion movie? That would be so awesome!
Live action has been dropped or at least put on hold indefinitely. There is however a remake being worked on. It's in the form of 4 movies, the first one ending just before Asuka arrives. Half looking forward to it, half dreading it, as while it will not suffer some of the same problems (no clear script form start, financial insecurity, mental illness), sequels and remakes are usually pants compared to the orginal.

Aww, dang! That's the official word from ADV on the live action movie?

And I've heard of the upcoming 4 movies - the first is out in Japan in September, right? And they are all just remakes and don't feature any new content, no?

Same here.

This is probably not a popular opinion but I think Anno is rather full of himself. At least that's how he comes across when he's interviewed.

Personally I don't really see what there is to add. I'm afraid it's gonna end up looking like a caricature of the original.

I feel the same way but you never know, we might be surprised with the outcome. Looks like he's pulling a George Lucas to me though and is just another way to milk money out of the series. It's rather ironic that Anno complains about lack of original anime (or something to that effect) and he does something like this.

Frankly I'd rather see the live action thing as that would have to be a real reinterpretation of the series that could be quite fresh and innovative. Although there are some people who think (or more accurately are hoping) the live action is gonna be a direct/literal adaptation of the cartoon which is of course completely impossible and ridiculous.

I'd rather see live-action than the new four film remake. Shame it fell by the wayside. If I won money on the lottery, I'd probably donate a nice big chunk to ADV on the condition that they make the NGE live action film!

BTW Citizen Geek, feel free to post thoughts as you watch the show, wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts, and for all of us to discuss the show in detail, beyond the finale.

I think I will! It'll be interesting for myself to read back over what I was saying of the series while I was watching it and I could see if my perspective of the entire series is changed by the last two episodes!

Oh and Ashley Riot is awesome, Akaten! :D
