Neon Genesis Evangelion

So, I just watched what the guide called the climax of the "Action Arc" which was episode 12. I've been really, really enjoying the action arc - the Angels are amazingly weird! I'm really trying to work out what the Angels are all about and it's obvious there's some huge conspiracy within NERV!

I know what the 17th Angel is after accidentely opening the guide on the wrong page :(

Yeah gotta love the angels.

Watch the rest NOW.

Yeah, the Angels are awesome! That "organic computer" one (the 11th Angel, I think) was awesome! I've now finished the "action arc" (eps 8 - 13) and now I've heard about Seele and all that, so I'm looking forward to what happens next!

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Argh! I saw the 17th Angel but I knew nothing of him, now some idiot just spoiled it for me! He asked me what the 17th Angel looked like then I realised it looked like Rei and now I know there is some connection there! Throughout the whole of episode 21 all I could think about was that connection! :(

The best is yet to come. Make sure you watch 22 and 23 in the Director's cut form.

Would it be better to just watch those episodes in DC form the first time, or is it better to watch the original aired version first, then the DC later?

There's no point watching the originals at all.

Actually in my opinion there is. :p

The directors cut was designed to lead the series towards End of Evangelion rather than the original last two episodes, ( hence the references to the EoE episode titles in the epilogues, the artwork changes to Central Dogma and the clarification of a couple of plot points that only make sense when you watch EoE. )

The original non directors cuts are all that you need to watch if you're just going to watch the original ending.

Also as a note, EoE is the same story as the last two episodes but from a different point of view, ( in a manner of speaking, ) and it's best to watch both as I personally think that each one helps you understand the other a little better.

So as stated in the past, The order 'I' recomend watching the series in is -

All 26 originals, then the directors cuts, then End of Evangelion.

Thanks for the advice Tasker, but I'm afraid you're too late! I've just finished the entire series and I watched the director's cut eps of 21 - 24.

*SPOILERS*

Intially, I was very disapointed with the ending (though I didn't "hate" it like many do, nor think it was necessarily "bad"). But, upon reflection, I think the last two episodes are actually quite good! I think I would have preffered a proper conclusion to the entire story, rather than just Shinji's mental struggle being concluded. In any case, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as some people have it built it up to be!

Kaworu was awesome! He should have had a larger role!

And now, I'm going to get my hands on The End of Evangelion! Is EoE any good?

I don't think anyone would say to you it's not worth watching, especially as you've finished the series.
I don't know I can really say it's good any more than I could say an individual episode picked out of the series is good - they all come together to make up the whole, which is awesome. I prefer ep25-26 as an ending to the series, but both they and EoE have their own merits.

Cool, looking forward to EoE a lot now! Just ordered it from Play.com. It's made entirely of new scenes, right?

Just thinking about this series makes me want to want to stay up all night and watch the series all over again! It was really, really, really brilliant! I loved the characters, the imagery, the plotline, the mecha action, the designs - pretty much everything! This is definately required viewing for any anime fan, isn't it?

Despite the impression that other people may have of my impression of the series, ( oh yeah like 'that' made sense :D ), I have to agree with you - NGE 'is' a great series, ok it's not the be-all and end-all most holy of the holy that a huge number of people seem to think it is, but it's still a brilliant series.

If you want a proper conclusion to the series, then End of Evangelion is the closest you're going to get, but don't expect it to make any more sense. It's more or less everything that went on in the last 2 original episodes, but set in the 'real' world.

And after you've watched it you 'will' want to throttle everyone involved in the making of it for ending it where they did. :p

Uh, could well be entirely new scenes. I can't remember it reusing any from the series offhand.

I generally recommend that people watch a bit of Eva once they're seen some anime, just so they find out what all the fuss is about. It's kind of a hard series to recommend to someone on the basis they'll enjoy it, I can never guess if someone'll like Eva or not ^^;

Oh, and I'm glad you liked it :D .

I agree, pretty much. But I do think that NGE deserves all of the raving it gets!

Well, the ending of Evangelion wasn't as confusing as it's usually built up to be, to be honest. It made perfect sense, really - Shinji is trying to sort his mind out basically and in the end, he does. Sure, it's more complicated than that, but that's pretty much all there is to 'basically' understand ^_^

Thanks! :)

I can't imagine any anime fan not liking Eva, really.

One thing do have to say about EoE, as it's my favourite bit. ( I'll put the name in as a spoiler incase you don't want to know who i'm talking about. :D )

You finally get to see what it's like when Asuka goes on a mental, solo ass kicking rampage.

I thought it was rather good that instead of her saving the day she got slaughtered and ripped to pieces. Not so expected.

Yeah but I wasn't going to mention that bit, I was going to let it be a surprise.

I think you could definately claim that it's the best post-Akira anime series so far. All of my other favourites don't even come close. Even NTHT doesn't quite capture the same depth of feeling.

NB I'm not saying that anything made in the 70s or 80s was better I'm just saying that was a different era and there's not much point comparing.
