Neon Genesis Evangelion

I think it's crazy that he got so much hate mail anyway. I mean sure the ending was rather anti climactic after the set up but it was a fitting closure to the characters which was what the series was really all about anyway. No need to get so worked up about it to send death threats. I guess that's why they're called fanatics though. Gee Whizz!

Death threats are a bit crazy, but I can definately understand why so many fans got so upset and frustrated. People had spent weeks and weeks follwing the show and you really grow to like the characters after a while, so I can understand feeling annoyed at such an ending. I didn't freak out about the ending because I knew there was End of Evangelion, but if I didn't know of that movie, and the series ending was it finished, I'd have been very angry and annoyed I think!

What you also have to remeber is that it was the first series to have that kind of ending. Everything before was well Gundam, where they have a big battle and then everyone gets on with their life (until the sequel)... or everyone dies (which kind of fails to get sequels off on a good footing). If you where expecting a Gundam ending and got Eva you would be pissed.
Also you ask what people liked about Eva and 9 out of 10 will say babes or mecha brawls, with the remain 1 would say Pen Pen. All the depth people wax lyrical about is fairly low on the likes of the AVERAGE anime fan. Most don't get it or like it. If you got it and liked it, kudos to you, but the rest of us just just go irritated by it.

That's not been my experience with Eva at all. In fact, I'm a little surprised you'd say most anime fans don't 'get' or like Evangelion. I've found the exact opposite to be true. You say that most anime fans like Eva because of the mecha and the babes, but I wouldn't say that at all. Most people like Eva because, yes, it has awesome mech action, but the human drama and the characters are what 'make' Eva to the vast, vast majority of people I've spoken to about Eva. As for the "babes" argument - what? Misato might have flashed some flesh once every 3 or 4 episodes, but that was pretty much it. Also, if people only cared for the mecha and the babes, why did everyone go crazy over the ending? Most people didn't just say "that was disapointing", most people were passionate about the ending. And if these people cared only for the mecha and babes, I don't think you'd get that response.

More people seem to like Rei. It's probably because they think she's easy.

Okay so the original ending may not have been conventional or fit with peoples perceptions of how a series should end but heck, I personally am a fan of it. ending.
I love how shinji finds it in himself to love himself and how everyone claps him and says congratulations at the end with the little opening theme ditty playing on piano in the background.

I'm more apathetic, but I can see why people could consider that shallow. After about the 3rd watch i still didn't 'get' it and just couldn't be bothered any more.

Well then, you're obviously just not trying. If you want to 'get' Evangelion, you can easily formulate your own opinions on the story - there are many ways to interpret Eva's plot IMO.

Oh don't get me wrong had several opinions and theories about the story and what it all meant. However it often wildly differs from every other one I've come across.

And why is that a bad thing? I think that's one of the best things about Eva - that so many people have so many different ideas about the plot and what it meant. I could talk for hours with other Eva fans about the plot, which is something I can't say for any other series I've seen, really.

I'm getting vol. 1 of RahXephon soon, so I'll be able to judge wether it stacks up to Eva or not =P

Yes and no. I like open endings to a degree, but there has to be some closure, and some degree a drawing together of what has gone before. Good examples would be FLCL, or Ashitsure baby. The former had an ending which was open to interpretation, and the latter just seemed like a break in a larger story but gave closure to a lot of the idea and story threads.

If at all possible try not to compare the two while watching them, or if you are try looking for the differences. Rahxephon is the offspring of Eva, so there are similarities on the surface. Look beyond those to see the gem inside. Also stick with it, it's not the action fest like Gundams or even Eva.
And if you want giggle inducing review check this one out.

Did people only watch the dub because he's at least ten times more whiney in that, to the point of comedy.

I watched the dub and I found Shinji to be ... human! OMG!! How dare they put REAL human traits into an anime character!

Seriously, why do people call Shinji 'emo' and whiny and whatever? It's so ridiculous, really ....
