Neon Genesis Evangelion

You finally get to see what it's like when Asuka goes on a mental, solo ass kicking rampage.
I thought it was rather good that instead of her saving the day she got slaughtered and ripped to pieces. Not so expected.
Because it filled the watcher with a false sense of hope?

I gotta say that after watching the series again recently(in Japanese) that Asuka is way more whiney than Shinji. On top of that I never really felt that sympathetic towards her because she was a bit of a tart throughout the series.

Shinji is A LOT more whiney in the dub though. His dub actor just goes too over the top at times. The dub is probabl one of the main reasons why people see him as pissing and moaning more. It's a rather different look at the character, and not in a way that adds to the show.

Nah, because she's a bitch. :)

ok it's not the be-all and end-all most holy of the holy that a huge number of people seem to think it is, but it's still a brilliant series.

I think you could definately claim that it's the best post-Akira anime series so far. All of my other favourites don't even come close. Even NTHT doesn't quite capture the same depth of feeling.

NB I'm not saying that anything made in the 70s or 80s was better I'm just saying that was a different era and there's not much point comparing.

Yes, Evangelion is pretty freakin' fantastic!

Personally, I think Fullmetal Alchemist just about edges it out as "Best Anime EVAR".

I was watching Invader ZIM episode Hamstergeddon with the commentary on, and before i didn't noticed, but Jhonen Vasquez mentions a EVA reference in it. I was quite in shock, i knew he was a anime fan and all but a anime reference, haha.

The Megadoomer zim rides around in on one episode is based on Eva. It even has to be plugged in.

Hehe, Evangelion references in US shows - that's a pretty good indicator of how popular the show is. I don't think aby other anime bar Akira gets referenced in US shows.

Also, I found this video today that shows a Japanese middle school performing the Evangelion OP - Evangelion must be really, really mainstream there: http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=wshOecPxgm0

Hehe that's great, I wonder how the discussion for 'that' meeting went.

Teacher 'What shall we do for the concert this year?'

Student 1 'I dunno, Wagner?'

Teacher 'No! We do that every year. We need something that's never been done before.'

Student 2 'What about a Britney track?'

Teacher 'Do I even have to justify that with an answer?'

Student 3 'This is going nowhere. Gimmie a nudge when you decide on something.' - Takes his PSP out of his pocket and turns it on -

Teacher 'Tight then, how about...' - Stops dead at the sound of the Evangelion opening titles coming from the PSP -

*SPOILERS for End of Evangelion*

Just watched it and WOW! It was excellent, just as I expected. I particularly liked the part with the "tumbling down ..." song in the background. Asuka is awesome beyond awesome! Why did Misato have to die? ;_; I supose it doesn't matter, though, since everyone died. A lot of it didn't make sense though, so I'll have to consult some plot explanations and the commentary might clear some things up. Would you believe I didn't realise what Shinji was doing at the start until I watched that part again with the commentary. Didn't understand the very last scene at all.

Overall, this movie blew me away! It was awesome is pretty much every way - this is definately the ending Evangelion should have had! ^_^

Nope. They just pretty much make fun of the movie the whole time and talk about how they added 'cool' sound effects in the dub. Like that stupid gunshot splat when Misato blows that guys brains out.

Good reaction! These are things everyone says after watching EoE :p

People may disagree with me on this, but I tend to think of it as the polar opposite to the ending from the TV series - in the series he accepts everyone inside the egg of lilith (or whatever), in the movie he rejects them and is left alone on the world.

Nah, I think he accepts individuality and now he just has to deal with it.

*SPOILERS*

So, you both basically agree the last scene wasn't just a metaphor or anything - that Shinji is still pysically living?

Darn, but I was expecting that, I think ;_; I don't think I'd mind these commentaries that attempt to mock the movie if they were actually funny, but they never are.

Pretty much the same way I see it.

Also, once he'd made this decision and Rei had accepted it, wasn't there some mention that others could too if they wanted to? Which would explain Auskas apperance on the beach with him.

I think there's a line said to Shinji something like 'If you want others to exist again then their hearts will seperate them again'.

*Spoilers for EoE*

I've heard some people say that EoE was just one big "f*** you" to the fans from Hideaki Anno - anyone else agree with this?

I think that certain scenes, such as Shinji masturbating and the flashing images of the hatemail Anno got after the series ended are obviously meant as some kind of two fingers up to the fans, but the rest of the film has too much meaning and the song that Anno re-wrote, Come, Sweet Death, makes me think that the entire movie was far from just being Anno's 'revenge'.

*End of spoilers*

Oh and if anyone is looking for the Evangelion special boxset, most other online retailers are out of stock, but HMV still it here. I think Virgin Megastore online still has it too!

EDITED
Agree with the idea that it's saying 'up yours'. What tipped it for me was the 'dream sequence' where they break into live action footage and there was a bit that seemed to tell the view to grow up, get a life and get out more.

No, I don't think you do =P I don't think that of EoE at all, I only think that certain scenes were meant to be provacative, but overall the movie is what Anno wanted the series ending to be.
