Neon Genesis Evangelion

Did people only watch the dub because he's at least ten times more whiney in that, to the point of comedy.

I watched the dub and I found Shinji to be ... human! OMG!! How dare they put REAL human traits into an anime character!

Seriously, why do people call Shinji 'emo' and whiny and whatever? It's so ridiculous, really ....

I know. I think one of the most hilarious things I've come across among anime fandom is otaku (which afterall means geeks) describing a fictional character as whiney and bitchy as they're all the epitome of masculinity. In my opinion it.s more to do with escapism. A lot of people don't want to watch something that has any relevance to real life.

And why is that a bad thing? I think that's one of the best things about Eva - that so many people have so many different ideas about the plot and what it meant. I could talk for hours with other Eva fans about the plot, which is something I can't say for any other series I've seen, really.
Yes and no. I like open endings to a degree, but there has to be some closure, and some degree a drawing together of what has gone before. Good examples would be FLCL, or Ashitsure baby. The former had an ending which was open to interpretation, and the latter just seemed like a break in a larger story but gave closure to a lot of the idea and story threads.

Well, the series ending might have been ridiculously open-ended, but the 'real' ending in the form of the End of Evangelion movie, had closure and open-endedness in perfect proportion IMO. I think one of the resons Eva is still being discussed to such a degree, more than 10 years after it was made, is because of it's ending and how open to interpretation it is.

If at all possible try not to compare the two while watching them, or if you are try looking for the differences. Rahxephon is the offspring of Eva, so there are similarities on the surface. Look beyond those to see the gem inside. Also stick with it, it's not the action fest like Gundams or even Eva.

Yeah, I'll do my best to look beyond the similarities - I'm pretty sure they're only superficial anyway. Really looking forward to RahXephon, actually!

I think I agree with the escapism thing. Perhaps Shinji is too 'real' for some people? In any case, I found Shinji to be one of the best characters I ever watched. He's not nearly as whiny as some people would have you believe and he's actually very, very likable. I think he's probably my favorite character in Eva, and given the standard of the characters in Eva, that's high praise indeed! =)

Agreed.

Did you ever watch the commentary for End Of Eva? I thought it was dire and didn't add anything to... anything.

I only watched the start of the commentary so far and it made me realise what Shinji was doing at the start of the movie. Seriously, I did not notice that Shinji was masturbating at the start of the film! But, one of the people doing the commentary used the word "wanking" so that pretty much convinced me that you were right when you said the commentary was dire!

3rded.

I completely agree.
I personally love Shinji.
I love that he doesint have all the answers or amazing bravery.
I love how human he is.
How people constantly moan about how whiney he is,considering what he is being subjected to, is beyond me.

I hate when people slag the crap out of somethng just cause thay dont understand it.

Agree with you 100% there, Outlawstar!

Some new Eva stuff:

Thye covergirl for this month's issue of Japan's Rolling Stone magazine is ...... Rei Ayanami! Apparentely, it's an eco-themed issue and the magazine asks if the first Rebuild movie is about the environment. Take a look at the cover (and some more info) over on ANN.

And here is the official second trailer of the first Rebuild movie.

Seriously cannot wait for more Eva!

Wowzers. I'm getting impatient for these movies.

Its funny how soon as a trailer spawns up on the internet about 500 different YouTube accounts upload the same thing.

Oh god I hope not. That will be a complete reversal of why Eva was good in the first place ie that it looked at a real human issue in a realistic and mature way.

ooooooo.

Was a bit 50/50 when I watched the first trailer and realised they were using CG, but after seeing this i'm really looking forward to it. :D

And, they've put bubbles in the LCL. Yay for small details. :D

I wonder why they havn't used 'Thesis' yet though? :?

I just had a scary thought: What if they don't use Cruel Angel's Thesis?! It would be awesome if they got Utada Hikaru to do a version of it! ^_^

Yeah, a new version of Cruel Angel Thesis would be better than the meh music I've heard for the movie's up til now.

Are you serious? I've loved the music in both trailers so far! "Beautiful World" and Hikaru's version of "Fly Me to the Moon" was all I listenend to for a few days, I liked them so much! They couldn't have picked a better singer for this movie series IMO.

Now that would just be sick and wrong. :(

No!

Just..... No!

'Fry me to the moon' was a sin against God, it was so bad. :x

I am serious. I don't like her voice.

It's probably her style more than here voice for me, if she were to sing the songs how they were meant to be sung, I probably wouldn't find them so offensive. :?

Actually that's exactly what I meant.

Utada Hikaru is awesome, that's just a FACT! :p

What does that have to do with Utada's music for Rebuild of Evangelion? :?

What? Beautiful World is her own song, so I'm pretty sure she gets to decide how it's meant to be sung. And Fly Me to the Moon isn't 'meant' to sung the way it is in the series, but you don't complain about that ....

I don't see how it would be a "complete reversal" of why Eva was good in the first place, but I'm not sure if it would be wise of Anno todo that. I don't see a "protect the environment" message fitting in too easily with Eva.

Yeah I know what hes saying though.
She sings it giving it a bit too much effort almost raising and lowering her voice when it really isint needed, like when she sings boulevard of broken dreams. Its not very good.

I love her version of Boulevard of Broken Dreams! ^_^

Utada Hikaru's music for Eva has been upbeat, yet sad and that suits Evangelion perfectely.

There's no denying that Utada has a brilliant voice, anyway.
