Neon Genesis Evangelion

I know that the symbolism was most likely just put there to distinguish Evangelion from other mecha shows, but the imagery is still striking. In any case, I've decided to buy this thanks to the reccomendations of certain people here. Thanks for the help, all of you! :D

I thought Evangelion was universally loved in anime circles, but I guess I was very wrong, huh?

I'd say it's striking as well but like I said that's just personal preference.

It's also probably true that you tend to find heavy use of symbolism more in films (anime or otherwise) rather than series. I guess that does make Eva different.

God No!,

This happened to my Evangelion thread way back when; and by that i mean everyone starts talking about the character developments and the apparent philosophical meanings of life shown in this particular anime things along those lines.

Here we go, been looking for this. this is exactly how the box set comes.

RahXephon struck me as a very evil show.
Purposely didn't mention that show as it has nothing to do with the topic.
Anyway CitizenGeek Let us know what you think, and if you plan on getting the two movies as well. Wonder which side of the marmite like divide you'll fall on.

Yep, I'll be sure to dig up this topic in a few weeks, when I've watched all of the episodes! I'm thinking I'll end up really liking NGE, mainly because I loved the first two eps! I really hope I like it anyway, seeing as it cost me €115!

I can't not say it.

The first two eps aren't necessarily that representative of the rest of the show. Though there are probably very few anime where they are.

Even I'll agree with that. It's the last two which really gets the marmite going.

Really?

I don't think I've ever heard any fan of the show say that they really like the last two episodes.

Well, even if the last two episodes are bad, there's always the movie that replaces it, right? The End of Evangelion, I think is the one.

EoE is more of a remake of the last two episodes. Whereas Death And Rebirth is a remake of all the other episodes 1 - 24.

It's also a dire confusing mess that is hell to follow even if you've already seen the series.

I really like the last two episodes of Evangelion. I'm pretty sure I said this and explained why in the last thread we had on Evangelion, so I can't be bothered to do so here.

Whilst the first two episodes are not a good basis to judge the show, they are a good indicator of whether you're going to enjoy the series, with the exception of the final two episodes and similar sequences, the only way to find out of you're going to enjoy them is to watch them. Although watching the first four episodes is probably better in that respect.

Heh, generally speaking it's a well-liked show. There will always be people with anything that disagree with the majority (for good reasons or bad), and Eva is certainly a show that causes commotion when it gets brought up.

The first two episodes are fairly representative of the rest of the show, as is the case with most anime. The last two episodes are somewhat different, but that's why we have the term "Gainax ending".

As I've said in all the other Eva threads over the years, I genuinely liked the last two episodes. In fact, quite a few people like the last two episodes. And have told you as such

End of Evangelion (EoE) is a remake / alternate version of the last two episodes, however they're so different from each other that it's probably worth watching both. Don't bother with Death & Rebirth though.

Well, I personally don't 'mind' the last two episodes but I would have prefered a propper ending. :?

Don't get me wrong, I love Evangelion, but to me, ( and as i've said before ), the series had always screamed. 'Oh crap were running out of money. What can we do to pad it out a bit?'

Lets take a look at a few at a few things used during the series...

Clip episodes
Dramatic pauses, where nobody/nothing moves.
Reusing the same few seconds, over and over and over and over...
Reusing the same animatoin but with different voiceovers
Pencil/magic marker concept sketches
Stills of the scripts/production sheets
And even animating straight lines for F'sake

I'm sorry, but to me EoE is the ending they wanted to make originally but just didn't have the money for.

Does all this mean I don't like it? No, as I said I still love the show, I just think it could have been so much better.

But then, if it wasn't how it is now, would it still have the same charm/appeal?

1) I think that's pretty much been established as fact. Same thing happened with Kare Kano and Gainax.

2) Why do kids in this country always apologise before they state an opinion even if it's not offensive to someone? I've only noticed it recently but now I see how prevalent it is. Have we reached a stage where we feel guilt about thinking for ourselves?

Hehe, I realise that about EoE, but the creators deny it's that way so... :D

I just use it as a way of opening a sentence, nothing to be guilty about, just a figure of speech. :D

As for the term 'kid', I probably outgrew that ooooooh at least 20 years ago. ( Havn't been called that since I was about 15  )
