Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku (Japanese audio) - Episode 13 (Completed)

With the exception of the last few episodes of Golden Kamuy Season 4, I pretty much finished the simulcast watch for the shows that I was going through. I would have gone through more but I didn't want to overdo it (and I suppose trying to beat the Anime Planet Challenge isn't helping either).
 
My Tiny Senpai ep1: Ugh, not to my taste. I have nothing against fetishy content (which this very much is), but when it's presented as clumsily innocent despite clearly being extremely contrived it just rubs me up all the wrong way. The core 'plot' of a senpai at work being really short and childlike, surprising the useless lead, has been done a million times before in slightly different ways and this added absolutely nothing to the formula. Any moments of actual comedy in this episode felt unintentional on the part of the creators. Dropped.

Horimiya Missing Pieces ep1: I don't remember half of the side characters properly but this was a nice episode. It's nice to see body insecurity from male characters depicted somewhat sympathetically, and also nice that in spite of the seriousness, the teen cast reacted naturally as teens would and behaved like a bunch of dorks throughout. Horimiya always does a good job of making its characters seem like flawed human beings rather than blushing moeblobs and for that I am extremely grateful.

UQ Holder complete series: I enjoyed this, despite the violence and plethora of severed limbs. I did think the theme tunes were much too jaunty for the subject matter. And now I find I have to watch Negima, another series that seems to have passed me by, to understand the back-story.

So much anime to watch, so little time.

Fate/strange Fake was a decent set-up for the upcoming series, I don't have much to say about it until the full series releases but I'm looking forward to it. In the meantime I still have a lot of Fate to catch up on as I've only seen Fate/stay night, the movie version of Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Zero and the first two Heaven's Feel movies as well as the first season of Fate/kaleid and the short Fate/Prototype OVA.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury - Episode 24 [Final]​

The main story wrapped up a bit too quickly imho but I really liked that they gave plenty of room for a proper epilogue at the end. I have loved G-witch and it has been consistently excellent from start to finish and for me has been the best Gundam show since 00 aired.

Not sure what to think of that ending,
some bits were cool (the combining of the Gundam), but most of it was either dumb (Suletta becoming space Jesus and using the Force or whatever to destroy the laser and then everything disintegrating didn't make much sense) and kind of a let down with how rushed it felt (no one got punished apart from one person, loads of people didn't get a final fate like most of the corporate higher ups we were introduced to) and the vast majority of the main cast got happy endings, and even the ones that deserved it weren't explicit enough (there were only vague hints that Suletta and Miorine actually got married!).
Overall the personal stories were quite interesting and I understood the motivation of most of them, but not all their actions and equally the corporate manoeuvres went over my head. But the giant space robots went pew-pew and there were many pretty colours 😅
Art and animation were the same as the first season.

Am I Actually The Strongest? ep1: Predictably, this extremely generic isekai completely failed to impress me. The lead is reincarnated but no effort is put in fleshing him out first besides 'nerd who was bullied', so the reincarnation elements feel fundamentally pointless? Check. His death isn't even slightly relevant to the plot? Check. He doesn't really care that he's dead anyway and moans that nobody ever looked after him even though he lived comfortably as a NEET? Check. He's reincarnated by incompetent, bumbling deities who make a mistake in the self-indulgent premise of his new life? Check. He's reborn as a baby so the first part of the series covers his growing up, accompanied by hilarious internal commentary about his situation? Check. The world treats him harshly for no real reason? Check. He's completely overpowered with no sense of earning his skills, even in terms of struggling to use them? Check. Naked dithery fox girls and lactation jokes? Check. A cute younger sister who is conveniently not actually his sister and seems awkwardly shy around him despite him having been her brother for her whole life? Check. Pointless lies designed to set up artificial drama which nobody ever questions? Argh. It's all so boring and familiar, and the fact that the basic setup is so similar to last season's phenomenal [Oshi no Ko] just makes the character writing for the lead seem even worse. So much opportunity for interesting introspection squandered in the endless quest for mediocrity. Dropped.

AYAKA ep1: A weak start which occasionally showed glimmers of potential but ultimately failed to hook me. The hero has far more reason to be traumatised by the circumstances of his upbringing than all of the last year's worth of isekai protagonists put together but he's handling it relatively well, and then suddenly his life turns into an supernatural/action story - yet his agency is still completely dismissed by everyone he meets. The characters are the worst part of this premiere as they're either super passive or annoyingly abrasive, with very little work done on giving me a reason to like them. It might improve when the suspicious folks who were paraded past at the end (and beginning) are properly introduced but I'm not feeling it so far and the summer is looking busy for me. Always nice to hear an angela song again, though.

Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero ep1: Another fantasy reincarnation story, though this one's a comedy and there's no world-hopping (though there may as well be given how much the setting changes before and after the lead dies!) It's not actually all that good, but at least the characters have some dynamism in their interactions and the gags flow fast enough that even when half of them don't land it's still more engaging than the competition. The horny camera angles to highlight the lead's assistant's swimsuit-clad butt were a desperate attempt to hide the crummy jokes, but having the main character being the demon lord rather than the loser ex-hero is definitely a big plus. I didn't hate the show but it's not funny enough to earn a second episode. It's one of the few recent fantasy comedies which actually have a discernible identity.

Pompo The Cinephile: Enjoyable movie looking inside the making of a movie. And it made me feel guilty for having Lawrence of Arabia and La Dolce Vita sitting on my pending pile for so long. Maybe next week.....
 
It feels like they aren't going to make another series for Gundam Witch from Mercury given how quickly they sped to the ending point on this one. A shame as I think a 2nd series would have been very well received.

On this new season, so far I've only seen the 1st ep of Ryza, which is a double length episode. It's very much setting the scene which I think it did well, but like the games I think it will be pretty chill/slice of life, will see if it can keep my attention.

I watched Am I Actually The Strongest? last night myself. I realize it's not a very good isekai but it still held my interest through eight episodes in one sitting, so evidently I was enjoying it well enough, lol.

I did start in on the first episode of Thunder-Thighs Riza from the Summer season, but I only watched the first 15 minutes; I think that one is going to be too mellow of a slice-of-life for me.

I'm really looking forward to Mushoku Tensei S2 and Horimiya S2, but I haven't quite finished all of the first season yet for either of them.

Insomniacs after School episode 13 Commemorating. (Complete. A likeable school-based series, might check out the manga for this one.) 3.5/5

It will perhaps be too slow for many people, though it got a little better once they introduced the actual alchemy bit towards the end.

I'll see how next couple of episodes are.
 
Insomniacs After School ep 13 (complete)
Adventures end.
A sweet romance about 2 insomniacs who gradually grow together as they have to form an astronomy club to be able to use their favourite napping place at school. This leads to plenty of beautiful moments both in their relationship and the scenery of the places they visit to view the stars.
The art was very nice in the scenery department, but the character designs weren't as consistent. Most of the time they'd be very nice, but occasionally be a bit goofy. The animation was pretty minimal, but being a mostly sedate SoL there's not going to be anything too flashy.

This seems a bit dumb (he stops pestering a girl and then she starts liking him? Re-reading the synopsis she has always liked him? So why not except his advances? And also sounds like this will be the status quo with misunderstandings aplenty from now on 🙄) and far too wordy too (I correctly guessed it was a LN whilst watching). Might give it one more, but not the best of starts!

Not sure on this one either, if she was that blind how on earth do you forget your glasses? Later they are broken and then she gets contacts, so I'm guessing it's not going to be the same thing again and again, but just the icebreaker. But equally there's nothing particularly attention grabbing about either lead.

Being honest, it's a bit boring. Too much talking and no Pepper until 20.
