Hibike! Euphonium

e.6 - The Tuba-kun scene. I died.

e.7 - Holy balls the middle of this ep was devastating. And then the end... which notably didn't end with Kumiko's usual catchphrase.

My unsavoury pals and I had an '80s themed viewing day. Much VHS noise was had.

Circuit Angel (1987)

Workman-like racing drama about a young biker and her sneering, wealthy rival. Nothing spectacular, but certainly answers any questions you may have about what Initial D would have been like with a female protagonist.

Riki-Oh: The Wall of Hell (1989)

Feels a bit like on of those 'highlight reel for fans of the manga' setups, but a passable bit of macho nonsense nevertheless. Bonus points for hilariously unsubtle christ metaphor and prison riot guard guy with a flail. A flail.

Girl Detective Club (1986)

A girls' school sci-fi fluff piece, this was no doubt a shameless attempt to cash-in on the success of Project A-Ko, but it's every bit as daft (if not more so) and actually quite charming, if curiously long for its relatively brief runtime. Had it been longer, it might have outstayed its welcome, but a fun way to spend half an hour.

Urusei Yatsura ep1

First I've seen this outside the BBC's infamous joke dub. The change in art between this first episode and the later seasons is certainly pronounced, but I feel its sense of humour has aged far better than you might expect. Will probably come back to this once I've finished the first series of Slayers.

City Hunter 2 ep16-17

I gather this second season is mostly made up of two or three part stories, which is an interesting expansion from the mostly self-contained episodes of the first. The story, about Umibozu hiring Ryo to guard him from a female assassin, was nothing you wouldn't expect from the show, but I could scarely care less. City Hunter soothes me like a warm bath.

Wild Seven ep1 (1994)

The real surprise of the night (not least of all because it was significantly newer than I originally thought), I stuck this on expecting a piece of laughable rubbish, but we ended up quite enjoying it. It's absolute macho power-fantasy crap, but the execution is super-slick, with a surprising amount of care lavished upon the production. The retention of its original 1960s trappings also feels pleasingly quaint, as the armed robbers flee their crime in a vintage citroen van and a later villain holes up in a tower block with a clockwork guard system to rival the castle of Cagliostro.

about 7 eps of My Love Story. I do like it, but it's starting to push even my threshold of sickly anime sweetness. And my threshold for that is higher than most.

Aha, I was waiting for vash to step in with an opinion on Ore Monogatari!!, since it was down to him that I watched My Little Monster (not that I'm even sure that's a fair place to start making comparisons).

That post makes it sound kind of medium, though.

My Love Story is fantastic, but yeah, it's kind of relentless in its super sugary positive-ness, you can kind of only really watch one episode at a time or it gets too much.

Paranoia Agent (Dub)-Episodes 8-13 Complete

Episode 8: Okay, I'm going to need some explanation here. I don't know if the point of this episode went right over my head or if there was no point at all and as such I have a ton of questions. Why was that group of people trying to kill themselves? No reason is ever given. What was the point of the episode in the overarching plot? Lil Slugger only appears briefly and doesn't do anything. Why was that group of people really freaked out when they looked at the photo? Surely they saw the group behind them, right? What was with the last shot? I don't get the link between the episode (and the episode title for that matter) and Extra Thin Condoms. This episode just baffled me. From the weirdly goofy tone that is pretty inconsistent with the rest of the show to how little it links to the other episodes, I just didn't get it.

Also, in regards to the BBFC cut, ouch. That was not subtle at all. I don't agree with cutting it, but if you're going to cut it, you could have done it so much more tactfully than that. You could have shown The 2 adults in the noose and just implied the child was in the noose then cut to the branch falling down without having a close up of the girl in the noose. It still wouldn't have made much sense but it would have made a bit more sense then how they did cut the scene.

Episode 9: More filler. Meh.

Episode 10: Well that was a really weird episode. Disappointed to see a third episode in a row that is pretty much just filler.

Episode 12: Okay, what the hell. You can do the whole characters percive things different to reality thing, and the show does it well, but when you have characters gaining information in a way that is in their heads that would be impossible in reality then not give even a hint at how they really got that information just creates plot holes.

Hello!! Kiniro Mosaic-Episode 11

I NEED A KINIRO MOSAIC MAGICAL GIRL SPIN OFF RIGHT NOW

The reason that group of girls freaked out when they saw the photo was because they saw the ghosts of the two men and little girl. They succeeded in one of their the suicide attempts earlier in the episode so the girls didn't see them until the photo was taken. I was confused too when i watched the episode so i looked it up on wikipedia and this is what i found:

"At the end of the episode, Fuyubachi notices that the three of them don't have shadows when a man walks between them without noticing it (And indeed, they do not have shadows throughout the episode, although the two men do seem to cast shadows in the very early part of the episode, indicating their very first suicide effort may have been effective)."

I agree with the BBFC cut, it's a really jarring one that should have been done better.

Ah I see. That also explains The guy walking away after jumping in front to a train. I'll have to look out for the lack of shadows if I ever rewatch the show. I did a bit of research about the episode too but I haven't come across anything regarding the name of the episode and the last shot in regards to the episode itself.

e.8 - This episode was delivered BEAUTIFULLY. There were so many moments where it could have felt dumb, but never did. Best use of finger-on-nose animation in some time. I may have watched it more than once.

e.9 - So this threw the curveball of not ending on the obvious cliffhanger, which was both extremely fair but at the same time completely brutal. It only hit me that Natsuki wasn't going to make it literally as the names of the other Eupho players were called out. I "probably" should have guessed, but damn that was tough. Reina getting the solo was not a surprise, but the atmosphere in the room when it was announced was palpable.

e.10 - Natsuki is the goddam best. Asuka is the realest though, and her key scene in this episode was some of the best character work in the show so far.

"... rabu?" Literally thigh-slapping levels of entertainment.

I'm glad I caught up now with e.11 just around the corner and not a few days ago, because the wait for the trumpet showdown would have killed me.

Slayers ep5-6

Inferno Cop (complete)

Having never finished Inferno Cop on its original run, I got the chance to watch it all in one sitting this time. Not sure I'd recommend doing so as, while it's a bit of a Python-esque giggle at the outset, I was getting pretty tired of it around the time the Evangelion jokes kicked in.
