What Games Are You Playing?

I'll be playing a lot more PC games from now on.

My first ever PC build. Specs here. It hasn't exploded yet so that's a good start. Now I can slowly make a dent in my Steam backlog.

Finished The Wolf Among Us. Fantastic title with a gripping story, brilliant array of characters and stellar music/presentation. Really hope there is a season 2, especially with that ending!

Just started Steins; Gate. My first visual novel. Should be an experience..

Noice. No time for your backlog though, get on The Witcher 3. :p
Sure thing! Right after I start The Witcher 1.

And The Witcher 2.

And after I finish my replay of Xenoblade.

And once I complete South Park The Stick of Truth Skyrim Lego Harry Potter Bioshock Jazzpunk Trails in the Sky oh god it doesn't end

Just play The Witcher 1 and 2 Ath instead of looking at summaries. =p that's what i'm doing~ and making good progress too. I'm in the biggest act of the first game now, so once i get through this it should be plain sailing and i can get onto Witcher 2 in no time.
Also been playing a ton of Splatoon in my free time. God this game is super fun. The multiplayer is addictive and brings out my competitive side. I've still not kinda started the single player yet >_> that needs rectified!

If, you know, 60-ish hours of gameplay between the two is no time at all! Although tbh you could do neither (read the summaries or play the games), and just read the books to get the setup for the Geralt/Yennefer/Wild Hunt/Ciri story that is the catalyst for the third game. The first two games are neatly tied in, but are ultimately 95% filler.

After putting it down three years ago, I finally picked up my Half Life 2 save today and finished for the first time. I enjoyed it and it's a good game, but I think it's a little over rated IMO. Will start Episode 1 tomorrow.

You could probably just play The Witcher 3 without any background fairly safely. I haven't completed much of the main story but the parts I've encountered that involve Geralt's past have been fairly well handled to explain things without seeming unnatural.

That said, it'd be a shame to miss out on the previous games altogether. While I think The Witcher 3 does a great job of capturing the "monster hunter" aspect of Geralt's life, the other games have some pretty good points too. I may be in the minority but I think I generally prefer The Witcher 2 (enhanced) combat over that of the current version of The Witcher 3. I find that weaker enemies (usually groups) tend to take a bit too much effort, while bosses can occasionally be kind of weak (though they're mostly fun either way). The combat in The Witcher 3 can look great but I can't help wishing they'd just gone the full Batman/Shadow of Mordor approach (though maybe that wouldn't work as well for larger foes).

I can't comment too much on the story of The Witcher 3 because I've only been playing a bit over 50 hours and have done about three main story quests.

I just don't think Batman combat would suit Geralt thematically (and certainly not SoM combat). He generally should have a hard time fighting monsters, not just be whipping through them with "push the L stick now for tag team decapitation".

I think The Witcher combat is already pretty similar to Batman at heart. You have a collection of abilities and each is especially useful against a particular enemy and/or attack. The advantage of Batman combat is how precise it is. It flows very well and you usually know exactly what options you have at any time and can execute them without having to fight the controls. I think that's what The Witcher 3 lacks a bit, Geralt occasionally looks a bit clumsy rather than like he's an expert fighter battling a tough opponent. It can certainly be great when it works but the animations don't always sync up properly. For example, there are occasions where Geralt does a big wind up spin attack (supposedly fast) when he's standing right next to a monster that then has plenty of time to compose itself and deliver it's own (actually fast) attack before being hit. Little things like that tend to pull me out of feeling like I'm actually playing as (possibly) the best monster hunter in the world. When I play a Batman game, I usually feel like I'm playing as Batman (except when I mess up and get punched by pathetic goons, the embarrassment is worse than mere death). I'd say the actual combat balance isn't too bad in general, it's just that the game doesn't always pick the right animation or give the right feedback.

To be honest though, I don't have a major problem with the way The Witcher 3 combat is now. It has it's quirks but it mostly works fine and you get used to it after a while. I certainly think it works better with bigger monsters than groups of monsters but I haven't encountered an enemy that I didn't think I could beat yet (though I have occasionally used tactics that might have been a little cheaper than I'd like, although in some ways that might suit Geralt since there's no reason for him to fight fair).

Geralt is definitely not above cheesing his way to wins. :D

I understand what you're saying about effectively wanting more cinematic combat, but so many games provide that these days since Arkham Asylum set out the blueprint that I'm sometimes happy to go back to a more "traditional" slightly awkward style of RPG combat.

I guess that's true. To be honest, I spend far more time wandering about picking flowers or playing Gwent than actually fighting anyway so the combat is really only a small part of the game either way.

Okamiden

This game is just glorious. Obliviously not as technically impressive as its predecessor, the game still looks great on the DS and the characters and world is as charming as ever. Binged on it for about 3 hours this morning, too good.

Steins;Gate

Just amazing. Experienced two endings so far (using strategic save files to carry on after each one) and the stuff that isn't shown in the anime is just awesome. Suzuya and Faris-chan endings so far. Both what could be deemed "bad" endings and both extremely sad in their own ways. I believe the anime was an adaptation of the true ending which is what i'm gunning for (yes i'm cheating and using a true endings flag guide....)?

Game Of Thrones episode 4. Soooooo gooooooood!

Since the PSN is a bloody joke my Brother and I lost all our data. I decided not to replay episodes 1-3 for the moment and gambled with random decisions. Thankfully all but one of my decisions were randomly chosen so I got very lucky :)

Dekamori Senran Kagura (PlayStation Vita)
I have managed to achieve the Platinum trophy for this trophy list. Unlike the digital only versions, the retail one has a slightly different list and since all 20 characters were unlocked (2 of them are DLC but the retail copy comes with a code for them) the requirements for some of them extended to those characters as well. I used the cheat to unlock the undies trophy since I couldn't be asked spending ages going through them multiple times. I did however go through Arcade Mode which was fun while it lasted (and I say that because it's fixed to certain characters, I was hoping it would be randomised). Overall I had a blast with this game, spent over 20 hours trying to finish it all and I have changed the clothing for each and every one.

Tales of Hearts R (PlayStation Vita)
Going from Symphonia (which I still haven't finished yet) to Hearts I like the gameplay. After having 2 companions join the crew I realised my team were getting screwed over and then I realised I forgot to upgrade their soma, heh. Still I've spent at least 5 hours on it so far and I'm enjoying it.

Yakuza 4 (PlayStation 3)
After watching a 50 minute video about the Yakuza/Like a Dragon/Ryu ga Gotoku series I realised that I have yet to start the fourth instalment so I watched the recap clips of Yakuza 1-3 and started the first part of the game. Only spent a couple of hours on it due to the weather (the heat pretty much prevents me from playing my PS3 so I have to force myself to go downstairs instead) but I'm loving the graphics as usual. I do plan on importing the 1 & 2 HD Edition and Kenzan! at some point for the PS3.

The only thing I've been playing when I've had a chance the last couple of days is the Heavensward expansion for FFXIV.

What games have I preloaded today waiting to play them when they come out though? Arkham Knight and Fire Emblem if.

Bought Heavensward (kinda sucks that because I play on PS4 and PC, I'm gonna have to buy it twice...), now I have to actually grind all the way to the new content as I never actually finished the story lol should have just resubbed and done the content before buying Heavensward tbh as I apparently have A LOT to do still.....hope finding people for story dungeons isn't gonna be a problem :/
