What Games Are You Playing?

When I do get around to playing them I'm gonna go in order of release date rather than the chronological timeline, peace walker isn't part of the collection anyway and I'd worry that by the time I get to MGS2 I'll just be spoiled by the camera/controls of MGS3/PW... and maybe graphics of MGS3.

But I'll also need to dust off the wii and play twin snakes.

Um...Peace Walker IS in the HD collection =/

ALso Release Date Means you'd play MG1, MG2, 2, Twin Snakes, 3, 4 (if you have it), Peace Walker. Also the graphics/ controls of 3 aren't that big a leap and I get the feeling that PW is different enough to not be a problem. I never had a problem switching controls between different Resis.

Yeah, that's what I meant, it's pretty damn hammy! David Hayter especially. Sometimes when he's saying a line, it's almost like he has no idea what the meaning behind the line is, so it sounds terribly odd. Some times it even sounds like he's concentrating so hard on making each syllable as gravelly as possible that he forgets how to pronounce words properly. Some of the other VA's do fare a lot better, however.

Saying that, David's voice is hilarious and he is dedicated to Metal Gear, so I give him props.

Mmm, I think Cam Clarke wins as the hammiest of them all though =P BRRRRRRRRRRROTHER!

It's quite annoying that Lori Alan (the Boss) is one of the better voice actors, yet I can't take her completely seriously because she's Diane Simmons from Family Guy...

Exactly what i'm doing. It came at about 9am yesterday and I was going to start FFXIII-2 but that hadn't arrived (And wouldn't arrive till 4pm but that's another, somewhat tragicly funny, story) so I decided to just play the collection. I started with 2, despite wanting to replay 3 the most, as I knew I likely wouldn't go back to 2 if I didn't play through that first.

I stopped for about 10 minutes to have a nice healthy breakfast of chinese takeaway before spending the entire day beating MGS 2, finishing up around 11pm - even forgetting to eat dinner, which I've not done with a game in such a long time. I forgot just how good it is, despite the fact that there is SO MUCH WAFFLE in Raiden's bits. I swear those last few conversations leading up the final boss last around an hour. It does make me want to replay MGS 4 after this though...

I find that the VAs in 2 seem to be off tone for what they should be saying some of the times, but in 3 they seem to get the balance right. I probably wouldn't enjoy it half as much if the voice acting wasn't corny as heck. David Hayter's gruff voice is great though!

It's the, albeit brief, interactions between him and Snake that just end in gruff shouting matches. They're absolutely brilliant and I bet they had a lot of fun recording their lines.

45 minutes from beatng the Rays to fighting Solidus (I timed it last time I beat it :p) There's a similar amount of waffle in the Virtuous mission. In fact the Virtuous Mission up to beating the Ocelot Unit is about 80% cutscene...

Still, both solid games (no pun intended)

Also I would like to retract my previous statement about the Steal/Stealth thing in the manual, they were correct, I was wrong (but the button names are still incorrect)

Totally agree with replaying the games in release order, although I'm disappointed you guys didn't hunt down/dig out copies of MG1&2 and MGS1 to play, first. :p

I re-beat MGS1 on my psp about 3 months ago, although I have no excuse with MG1&2 as they're included in this as part of MGS 3 Subsistence. I've never even played them, so I was going to do it after. Probably not my best plan, admittedly :p

Interesting that I hardly remember any of what happend, although I remember that it's a really good build up for the rest of the game. Kind of like the Tanker segment for MGS 2. Infact despite having a special place in my heart I hardly remember much of 3, except getting to the sequence near the end of the game on my european extreme playthrough before throwing in the towel! I'll be beating it this time around for sure...

To get away from thinking about all this snow that's due I decided to test my new pc out with......Skyrim...yeah because skyrim really helps you forget about snow. Brilliant plan(!)

Definitely, I thought she was actually the best VA in the whole game, and I don't watch Family Guy so that's not a problem. The Boss is easily the best character in MGS3.

I would also be playing it in order of release date rather than chronological, as going backwards from PW and 3 probably won't do 2 any favours even though it is still a great game. I know Kojima suggested playing the game in chronological order (at least I think he did), but it's not like he really planned out the story to go the way it did from the beginning, he just kept on improvising with it!

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Those games totally stand up, btw. I played through everything in that 20th anniversary collection I linked to after I got it, and enjoyed all of them. POps maybe not so much, although the story is still cool.

I feel out of place, here but I played MGS1 years ago, never played 2/3 and never got into 4 :(

On a just slightly different note, have just started Yakuza 4, after playing 3 back in September/October. They're pretty cool games, not sure I've played anything else like them. The cutscenes are pretty well done too, it's not quite Noir, but theres definately a lot of thought into things like facial expressions.

^
Have you played Shenmue? It's basically everything Yakuza wishes it could be! But if you liked Yak 3 I'd recommend Yak 2, as I think it's the best out of the three (I haven't played 4 yet). And don't worry about not getting into MGS4 as the game serves no other purpose than to satisfy/infuriate(I lean towards the satisfied side of the scale) hardcore MGS nerds.

No, I missed the Dreamcast, had an N64 and went to the GC. I did enjoy Y3 though, SO FAR (like an hour in), Y4 is looking to be more of the same, but with more characters with thier own fighting styles, and less bits of content cut.

Looks like there's no second city either, although Kamurocho has been expanded and now has underground and rooftop areas.

Yeah i'm kinda jealous of that collection, it's a bloody nice one. It's nice to know the games still stand up. I must admit I'm now debating in my head whether to do MG1 and 2 before MGS3...

Don't get me started on the Yakuza games, I will ramble for hours. I am utterly in love with them and adore them in every way. If it wasn't for Dark Souls last year then Yakuza 4 would have been my game of the year. I was so happy that I got a comment on eurogamers readers top 50 for it just because it's one of my favourite series.

If you haven't already then, like vash, I would HIGHLY recommend playing Yakuza 2. It was my fave of the series till 4 came along. It was the game where Sega started to not dub the games, used a far better translation using far less swearing, added so much to the gameplay with side stuff that you could do and had the best storyline out of any of the games. In fact I'd say the transistion from the western 3-4 is similar to 1-2 in the way that everything was cut out of 3. 4 became such a rich experience because of it and

SEE I'M DOING IT. I just started typing a little bit and i'm launching into it like a crazed fanboy. Must reign myself in.

I don't know why but I hate the Shenmue-Yakuza comparisons, despite the fact that they are very similar, that I've made the same comparsions MYSELF and that I absolutely adore both series. Would I like Shenmue 3 in the Yakuza engine like everyone else? Hell yeah! That would be amazing. But...I just don't like the comparisons between the two, for whatever reason.

Although, great. Now I want to bust out my dreamcast and replay the Shenmues now. This will inevitably lead to wanting Shenmue 3 again, whilst also opening the door back open to PSO. Thanks! :p

Yeah Y3 was alright, I thought the orphanage stuff was really well played but I didn't think the overall main story was as good as the previous two, although some side missions were excellent.
Bit of shame Y4 doesn't have another city, as after already playing through three Yakuza's, Kamurocho's starting to get a bit boring for me. I still want to play the game eventually, though.

Really? I guess I'll have to play 4, then.

Don't worry, I actually hate those comparisons, myself. I just said that as a kind of joke to myself, as I always hear people say "Yakuza is what Shenmue should have been" blah, blah. When really they are actually almost completely different in every aspect other than being open world third person games set in Japan. Yak is more of a straight up brawler with RPG bits fused in here and there, whereas Shenmue is more of a proper adventure game. Saying that, Yakuza does certainly carry some of Shenmue's DNA in it somewhere.

Y U NO WANT TO PLAY IN CORRECT ORDER!? =P

I guess it's a Star Wars thing. In some ways release order can make more sense than chronological, but personally I've always been a stickler for chronology. Plus MGS3 is the one I wanted to play most. For all those saying 2 won't compare favourably, I think that's a tad unfair, much of 3's newness was down to the setting and CQC aside the controls are still basically unchanged so I don't think it would be like "Oh god how did I ever play this!?" If anything I think it would just be easier due to having the radar.

There are some small subtle differences in Kamurocho this time around, including 2 new "mini-areas" that actually help you traverse it a lot better, despite not being full blown areas. There's also another type of new gameplay mechanic, which greatly helps the game. I don't want to say it, just in case, because it could be a huge spoiler. And another important point to make - The only things cut were one song and AnsxAns.

4 intially didn't grab me as well as 2 did, but as the plot progresses it becomes such a delight, even referencing events that have transpired in the ps2 Yakuzas, as well as some character development. Once I got about half way through the game is when I started thinking to myself, "You know what...This is shaping up to be better than Yakuza 2..." and it just goes from strength to strength. I'm singing its praises highly but I think having the content cut from Y3 actually helps Y4. There is so much in there that feels "new" (Despite being in Y2) that the game feels so rich as a result. And goddamnit I spent 40 hours on a chapter that should have taken 40 minutes. That's how rich the game is.

On-Topic: Started playing FFXIII-2 last night. Sigh. Unlockable themes. I'm going after that platinum again~

Apart from despairing over that, an interesting start for sure. I'm liking Caius as a bad guy over Barthandelus, even though we've not seen his motivations yet. He seems to have more of a presence and an impact. Might need a bit of time for Serah to grow on me but Noel seems pretty cool. Not sure about the change to the Crystarium yet, partly because it takes me so long to decide what to pick. A new ATB could be cool - But what about those new accessories I got! Or a new role! Arghhh...

Battle system is nice and wicked again though. Still not sure about monsters as a third party member though...
