Upcoming Overseas Anime DVD Artwork

Classy, especially if those are solid perspex boxes. When you've got the name recognition of Eva you don't really need anything else.

I also quite like the simple look of it. I really wish it had English subs. Then again even if it did there is still the fact is costs an absolute bomb. Someone really needs to get this to the UK at some point. The rights situation with Eva in the west is heartbreaking.

It does look great, but let's be honest, if they slapped a hot image of Rei and Asuka on them, they'd probably sell a good few more.

Looks to be a similar design to the US Weeds LE set.

The perspex box on that is very solid :thumb:

Seems rather, underwhelming?
I think it looks incredible. Most (i.e. almost all) anime Blu-rays/DVD's look ugly as sin in my opinion. But I get it, not every series can afford to go with the minimalism of Evangelion , because it's bloody Evangelion :p Can't wait to get my hands on it. Very close. The packaging alone is making me squeal

Agreed, I think it looks great and suits the series.

What is the difference between the episodes that'll be on the Blu-Ray and in the archives set?

Would it? I feel Evangelion is a big enough show, especially in Japan, to where people know it's not that kind of show. I mean, I don't think anyone would buy it because of hot picture on the box knowing full well there is little to no fanservice in Evangelion. That kind of bait and switch might work if a show wasn't as well known but I don't think it would work for Eva.

@Yami, I think (Going off memory) the Blu Ray comes with End of Eva, Death and Rebirth and a ton of extras whereas the DVD is just the episodes.

I've read that the Archives DVD will be the only way to have the broadcast versions of the episodes, but I've yet to see anything detailing what differences these are.

As far as I can tell, the Blu-ray set is Evangelion remastered and restored with new tech, the best the series has ever looked while the DVD set is a literal archive of the series as it existed when it first aired on television. A time capsule if you will, a means to preserve the series in its original form, hence the name. The series has undergone many little changes here and there in-between the TV air and the various home releases from extended previews at the end of each episode and changes in the animation etc and this is the first time that the series has been released unaltered in its entirety. Its the most faithful release in that sense, exactly as it was seen on TV back when it first aired. The DVD set comes with Death(True) and Rebirth while the Blu-ray set comes with Death and Rebirth.

I'll just leave this image here:

I love this quote too:

''"Rei's popularity soared in Japan, with books featuring her image on the cover selling like hot cakes. She was christened by the media, "The girl who manipulates magazine sales at will", "The fastest route to the sold-out sign!" And even, "The Premium Girl."" pg 39 of Fujie 2004'' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rei_Ayanami#cite_note-33

I believe one instance can be called a little. I've only seen Eva once and that was some time ago, so maybe there is more than I recall. I really want to watch it again. I think Imaestro teased a community rewatch could be on the cards after Nadia so I'm holding out for that.

May be best to wait for the blu rays to come out over here so everyone can watch it legally.

Yeah, that's the only catch really. I'm not sure how many people here actually own the series with it being out of print and all. However if we waited for a UK BR release, we could be waiting years. It might not even come out at all. I think we could do one now and do one again way down the line again if there is enough interest.

It's kind of sad in a way too, as Eva is totally one of those titles well known enough that it could swing casual buyers who might just happen to see it on the shelf in HMV and be curious. I suppose there's the rebuild movies for that, but even so...

My Evangelion Collection isn't impressive in the slightest (a true fan is never satisfied!) but I do own multiple copies of the series. I own the Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum Perfect Collection (Tin), The Renewal of Evangelion DVD Box, The whole series on Japanese LaserDisc plus the Death and Rebirth + The End of Evangelion Limited Edition LaserDisc set and Manga DVD of EoE. I also intend to buy this Blu-ray set :p (£160? Bargin! )

I want the EoE Laserdisc set so bad. It looks beautiful. I can't really justify the cost considering it's a japanese audio only release, with no subtitles, not to mention I don't even have a laserdisc player but man does it make for an amazing collector's piece. I only have the Platinum Collection Tin (Digibook version) myself, the Manga EoE and Death and Rebirth Collection and 1.11 and 2.22 on blu ray. I also have a T-Shirt and a Phone Case but I don't think you could count those...

I've got the Platinum Edition DVDs, along with the Death & Rebirth and EoE movies. Also have 1.11 and 2.22 and will be picking up the JP BDs. Definitely in for any rewatch :thumb:

I only have the old ADV singles - took me about a year to track them all down at reasonable prices second hand.

Manga's old DVD of End of Eva is quite possibly one of the worst DVD transfers I've ever seen in my life - why did people ever think it was a good idea to artificially letterbox widescreen films to fit into square tellies back in the day?
