UK Anime Blu-ray & DVD Bargains

Should have asked to buy $5000 off them for £2500 while you had their attention, Shiroi.

edit: No, Grav, that's not how it's supposed to work. You're only supposed to be charged tax on shipping if the item is over the limit anyway. But if the item is over the limit, then the tax is applied to the full value including shipping.

Upping the tariffs to cover anything over £15 basically killed importing for me, interesting they'll do that to protect things like the the home video market from international competition but not the steel industry. I guess Dave & Co. have friends in retail.

I rarely import any more except from people who are willing to under-declare (and preferably include no receipts in the parcel). If you can't beat 'em, join 'em and I don't see why I should have to pay any tax if the likes of Amazon don't.

It has nothing to do with protecting local retail and everything to do with the government wanting more money...

I've noticed I only seem to get charged VAT on shipping when it's done by pareclforce, while anything deal with by Royal Mail just charges me on the item itself. It's always seemed to me that you basically get hit hard for using expensive fast shipping, while the slow kind they just tax the item.

Charging any kinda tax on shipping seems pretty dubious, I know it's a service, but it's one you contracted to a foreign countries postal service to provide, surely that means you paid your dues to the nation and shouldn't be billed extra. Undervaluing the item and overvaluing the shipping would be pretty easy to spot, afterall customs can see the size of the item and weigh it, making it simple to determine if that $300 shipping and $5 item value is really correct.

VAT
You pay VAT on goods sent from non-European Union (EU) countries and EU special territories (eg the Canary Islands) if they’re:

  • Gifts worth more than £36
  • Other goods worth more than £15
  • Alcohol, tobacco products and fragrances (eg perfume, eau de toilette and cologne) - of any value
You have to pay VAT on all goods sent by mail order from the Channel Islands no matter what their value.

You’ll be charged at the VAT rate that applies to your goods. VAT is charged on the total value, including:

  • The price paid for the goods
    Postage, packaging and insurance
    Any duty you owe

I've had a few, being honest about the prices but then I started going crazy, regularly importing Blu-ray sets and Figures worth 20k+ yen and marking them down to 2000 yen lmao. Good times.

I don't think I've ever been charged when importing from Japan, even though the shipping would take it over the threshold.

If you order from Amazon JP then they take care of the custom charges. Much like if you would choose the Expedited shipping over at Amazon US. Dealing with Amazon JP marketplace sellers is different, and i had it not so long ago with two of the Yamato discs that i had to pay custom charges.

I thought the customs threshold was £17 :?

It used to be £18.00 but got reduced to £15.00. Yay for progress.

I remember going to collect a parcel that had been hit with a grey slip shortly after this changed. And I walked right into a REALLY ugly scene. Loads of people, queued up outside the door of the collection office. All holding grey slips. People were NOT happy. And can you blame them? The lack of coonsistency and the measly threshold really are atrocious.

French version of Space Dandy S2 CE ~£25 @Amazon FR.
Based on this review of the UK release it should be safe to assume that the discs are the same
Audio:
Whilst it is a shame it has the audio in only 2.0 English and 2.0 Japanese, it also has a 2.0 French track combined with having English and French subtitles.
But I'm not sure so if someone could confirm it... I think the only difference would be the o-card.
I'm not really interested but thought I should mention it since a few people are waiting on the price of the UK S2 to drop. So, depending on your need for consistency and your loyalty to the UK branch this may or may not be a good deal. Your choice :p
