The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

To be honest I'm pretty confused about the criteria for the award. It's the 2016 readers choice award but is it series that aired in 2016 (erased) or physical releases in 2016 (fullmetal alchemist) obviously it could be physical but this being the UK anime awards and Erased not being released in this country yet is a bit weird. Point being seems like two awards mixed together or they just didn't know what to nominate.
I looked at the nomination page and I don't particularly remember seeing that series from the end of last year were allowed, I must have missed it. (Or perhaps they deliberately hid it.)

It seems not many were especially clear on the rules. But given how rude they were in reply to the legitimate question as to how the biggest smash hit of the eligibility period wasn't nominated, I doubt I'll be missing out on much by skipping it this year.

I enjoyed last year's deliberations, even if it was tedious hearing Shirobako win everything. It's a shame certain contributors to their site have become unbearable this past year...

I think the biggest surprise is that there are 8,336 other World Trigger fans...

In all seriousness, who do I need to suck up to finally get it released with English subs? I will take DVD only, I will suffer through PAL speed up. I just need a physical release of it (that I can afford, before anybody suggests the Japanese :p)...

The fact Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is ranked so low is honestly surprising to me.
It was a twitter poll, and the most popular titles were at the top of the voting list, so initial popularity will have self-perpetuated.

Because it was performed via Twitter, it was subject to all the usual campaigning. Western YOI fans were pushing each other to vote, and I'm sure similar things happened iin Japanese. Its just a fun, but ultimately pointless poll, I wouldn't take it too seriously, especially for a probably quite niche show like Rakugo.

That said, the reason @crashmatt doesn't like the survey is because he has awful taste :p

Another problem is that excellent shows like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu are amazing to watch - artistically speaking it was definitely one of the absolute best all year - but they don't lend themselves to all of the online hype and fan wars that shows with. Titles like YOI, Gintama, Love Live etc generate a lot more hype because everyone ends up rooting for their favourite characters, writing fanfics, thinking up theories, taking up RL ice skating/wisecracking/karaoke, buying doujinshi etc and this kind of phenomenon means they stay in the limelight a lot longer. Voting for a classy-but-self-contained show is as good as throwing your vote away in a popularity contest.

The poll is also very heavily female-biased and specifically biased to certain age groups who use Twitter etc. Immediately obvious from the results alone, which are mostly insane. I mean, I love all of the top three TV shows but the one in third place is unlikely to have reached that spot through normal means ;p

Taste is subjective as as such mine is subjectivity better that yours

I mean, they did change it from Sci-fi to SyFy to help pronunciation. If you still can't pronounce it, I think the UK education system has failed.
I was joking, and my own pronouiation isn't great but I would pronounce SyFy as closer to swhy-fwhy than sigh-figh...

In all seriousness, the pool of people that cares about anime is small, the pool of people that care about anime, don't own these titles and have satellite/cable must be tiny...
