The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Honestly, I barely even know what GG is. I tend to use SJW to describe people or sites with a certain slant. The whole 'Fan Service is Evil' thing really gets my goat, and I assume Polygon may have been similar to Kotaku in that way. I suppose that's a different discussion though. Again, sorry if you felt insulted, that wasn't my intention. Even when I'm not talking about YOI as a show, I still manage to put my foot in it :p
I don't think anybody completely understands GG, though "it's about ethics in video games journalism" is always a good punchline when somebody asks what something is... :p

I'm sorry, I probably overreacted too, as I've been saying a lot of the whole "Why do shows for men never get second seasons?" and "The girls have had their shows for ages, now it's time for the men to finally get one too" posts recently, that have rather pissed me off. (The obnoxious level of ignorance behind the idea that somehow Keijo!!!!!!! is the only show in recent years to include fanservice obviously targeted at men does my nut in.) I guess I monologued to get it out of my system in one go, so you ended up with the full brunt of things that weren't your fault. :(

I would argue that Re:Zero appeal's to a wider audience than Yuri On Ice. Though YOI fans seem very vocal on the matter they do seem to find it difficult to comprehend that it's not everyone cup of tea. Its certain not something I would ever consider watching more because I have no interest in sports anime.

The whole gay relationship in YOI shouldn't really be an issue and it kind of sidtracks discussions of if the show is actually any good.

Regardless Re:Zero's is popular despite the barrage of hate it gets. I still hope this will all lead to a season 2 at some point.

Barrage of hate? I'm maybe one of two people that vocally doesn't like the show. I think you're overplaying it a bit...

Re:ZERO fans equally found it difficult to comprehend that I actively disliked the show and i's protagonists, so it seems rather unfair to try and accuse YOI fans of that.

Also, the classification of YOI as a sports show is a weird one, because it kind-of is and at the same time kind-of isn't. It's more like Free! in the line of it being a "show with sports" rather than a "sports show". I wouldn't dismiss it just because of it's genre.

It's a marmite show so instills strong feelings in those who dislike it. Having seen some discussions on MAL degenerate into a slanging match its not over the top. You only have to look at some of the twitter comments from the original Crunchyroll post.

MAL in general is a shithole. I wouldn't touch their discussions with a bargepole if you value your brain cells.

MAL represents the very worst of anime fandom, I really wouldn't take them seriously.

Was about to question whether it could possibly be worse than CR's forum, which could charitably be described as bedlam, but having stopped to think about it, I don't remember it being especially malicious, so idk.

Anime News Network's "Megal Poll" for the best anime of the year has been announced. @IncendiaryLemon - look away now.

The Best Anime of 2016 MEGA POLL - Anime News Network:UK

I'm not so mad at YOI winning as I am at the best anime all year (in my opinion), Sound! Euphonium S2 coming 15th. Like, I know YOI is going to top most polls, both because of it's quality (according to most :p) but also because of the enormous buzz around the show, even from outside our little niche, but even so, I'd have expected Sound! to breach the top 5, top 10 at a push. This is just heartbreaking :(

Second seasons probably suffer from only appealing to a subset of those who watched the original, or feeling as though they're from a previous year. Though AssClass did oddly well considering how few people actively talk about it.

It's a real shame that Anime of the Year™, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu didn't even manage to break the top 10.

:^)
The fact that it's even getting a second season warms my cold, dead heart and means more to me than its inclusion or lack-thereof on a stupid list. RIP Aku no Hana. It was too good for this world.

Sound! has just had literally nothing being said about it. Like Rakugo, it's probably suffering from just having too few people actually watching it.

That said, I would note that yaoi and yuri shows seem to be different in tone and level of explicitness in their depiction of the yaoi/yuri relationship. I have never seen a yuri show, but the gifs are all of disgusting saliva kisses or reasonably "explicit" images (not in a sexual sense, but in a sort of clarity of purpose sense) of the relationship. Whereas with yaoi shows it seems to be reasonably discreet and mostly open to interpretation/all in the audience's head. I wonder if the "explicitness" of their depiction is perhaps why some shows seem to do better than others, despite the surface level similarity.

The other thing to perhaps bear in mind is that sound didn't get a good home video release and PONYCANUSA doesn't have the same marketing plans in place that Funimation or Sentai or even AoA has.

Or as I have taken to calling it, the AOTYEYNAASV poll. (That is to say, Anime of the year excluding Your Name and A Silent Voice.) I want motion pictures!
Your Name has had an incredibly limited release and A Silent Voice has had no release in the US. The only way they could be included is thanks to piracy. Even if everybody that attended a UK screening of ASV voted for it, it probably wouldn't do that well. (And **** yes, I'm still salty there weren't any screenings of either near me.)

Man her voice still really annoys me for some reason lol I dunno what it is but I just hate it (I know this adds nothing, but I felt like sharing this information...). Still, really looking forward to HF.

Just voted in the Crunchy awards, its a shame they couldn't include more titles. Asterisk wars have a great soundtrack is one that should be on there.
