For those not in the know - no BAFTA nomination for Your Name.

Of the four nominations for the best animated film, three of the four are Disney/Pixar (Finding Dory, Moana and Zootropolis). The other is Kubo of the Two Strings.

EE British Academy Film Awards Nominees in 2017
Not surprised Your Name wasn't nominated for best Pixar movie, only reason the category exist is to keep animated stuff out of the best picture category.

I've heard that a lot of the Oscar voters don't bother voting on the animated category and just ask their children... usually while heaping praise on mediocre movies just because they do something a little different.

I'm not sure this is really fair, Your Name got limited theatrical and presumably no awards push. It never really stood a chance of getting a nomination or winning, because most of the Academy won't have seen it.

We did give it a push within the restrictions we had FYI (no screeners, which is a tough challenge) so the presumption while fair is off the mark (although it's also accurate that Japanese animation has in over 10 years not been nominated at the BAFTA's).

That said the result is not a huge surprise - over the last 10 years of nominations in only one year did any non US or non UK or non US / Aus / Denmark (Lego Movie) get nominated when in fact 2 works did; Persepolis (France) and Waltz with Bashir (Israel). Both were amazing works and were beaten by the third nominee - WALL-E. Also skipped in BAFTA noms were When Marnie Was There (which I love), Anomolisa (despite the Oscar nod last year) and a bunch of other indie film I love like The Little Prince, Ethel and Ernest, Ballerina and more.

The more you know etc!

Best,

Andrew

I might be wrong, but I don't think The Little Prince got any theatrical in the UK. Paramount sent it straight to Netflix, so it may not have been eligible.

It made it to the long-list which means it qualified - the criteria are relatively loose for that so long as some work was put in. At the end of the day tho, similar issue to the Oscars for BAFTA votes alas ;_;.

Voter #5: I only watch the ones that my kid wants to see, so I didn’t see [The] Boxtrolls but I saw Big Hero 6 and I saw [How to Train Your] Dragon [2]. We both connected to Big Hero 6 — I just found it to be more satisfying. The biggest snub for me was Chris Miller and Phil Lord not getting in for [The] Lego [Movie]. When a movie is that successful and culturally hits all the right chords and does that kind of box-office — for that movie not to be in over these two obscure freakin’ Chinese fuckin’ things that nobody ever freakin’ saw [an apparent reference to the Japanese film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, as well as the Irish film Song of the Sea]? That is my biggest bitch. Most people didn’t even know what they were! How does that happen? That, to me, is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.

MY VOTE: Big Hero 6
