The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

To be fair, it was the scene where Yukine tries to sexually assault Hiyori in her sleep that killed the show for me, rather than anything Yato does.

Though I still think he has no positive traits at all and pains me to see the show constantly back him up.

I don't really hold gods and spirits to the same moral standards as living humans. Yukine is annoying but if I view him as Yato sees him based on his own worldview, rather than as a human boy with a stake in behaving like a rational human being, it makes a lot more sense to me.

Yato is pretty popular though. I can see it being hard going if you want to see less of him.

To be honest I was the complete opposite, I saw Yukine as the rational human being and Yato as the bizarre irrational "god". I guess that explains why my view of the show is the complete opposite to everyone else's (and probably says a bit too much about me and my worldview). :p

I'm happy for people that couldn't afford the UE.

I'm a tad pissed at @anime_andrew though for misleading us all into buying a UE we didn't necessarily want.

I always said we may do it down the line - see my own words on digital paper/screen:

I definitely said:
8. A standard version of the films / parallel works may get sold as a pack later down the line, but right now we’ve set no firm plans for it. So right now the Ultimate Edition is the only way but we’ll see how things play out based on demand though!

Source: Gurren Lagann: Ultimate Edition follow-up – All the Anime

We had no firm plans then and in fact after over 2 years of no other way to purchase it and requests at events to do it growing over the last year, we thought it'd be nice to do something for it given it's been a long time. 2 + 1/4 years after a release of the Ultimate seems like enough time...

Or are you now saying it's not unfair to people who bought the standard edition (the only easily accessible retail available version of Gurren Lagann since approx about January 2015) that they can't own the films? Because you just had a go at me separately about Noragami so I'm finding this a bit inconsistent ;).

So with that in mind, how precisely did I mislead anyone :)?

Best,

AP

Don't worry I'm happy about it too, I own the UE (still feel very ripped off) but frankly I think locking parts of a series behind it and not making them available in a reasonable priced alternative is ******. I guess if it was stated that the movies would be UE only I can see why people would be annoyed, especially if they bought that expensive version when they normally wouldn't because of it.

See above - but I never said that it'd be UE only forever, I just said we had no firm plans at the time (which we didn't until I was checking our rights vs titles out when laying Q1 out). We revisited it as the Ultimate is now basically out of circulation and the Standard BD has been the predominantly available version for about 2 years by release date. We definitely don't want to firewall stuff like that and never have particularly but it was always more about supply & demand (think I covered this somewhere before too) and since demand has been pretty clearly even at events growing - we figure it's time to do it :).

So wait, is a complete Space Dandy standard edition being released in place of a S2 standard edition? That seems a bit of a dick move to people who bought the S1 standard edition already.

We'll be catering to both but given I know precisely how many bought S1 standard only - it's best to run that as an AlltheAnime.com shop exclusive.

Happy about Space Dandy getting a complete season 1 & 2 set, currently sitting at a good price too. It's a bit of a kick in the teeth to those who bought a standard edition of the first season though, I was gonna say I expect better from AL but I'm not sure if I do actually. :/

Pretty disappointed about Overlord not getting a collector's, considering some of the crap/choices they've put out in said format it's also kinda surprising too tbh. The price is decent enough, speaking of price did we ever hear back if the RRP of ERASED was being adjusted or not? Maybe not the place to ask.....

Indeed - but I covered the ERASED price separately and like I said before on OVERLORD - people may be jumping too early on the no LE version as some products do go awol when being listed...

Re Dandy, see previous comment but given the majority of sales were via our own store and over all were less than 500, I'm running that via our own store to keep it all simple. So there's no teeth kicking, I just didn't list and update as a lot of my team are on holiday and I'm juggling a lot ;).

So what they removed Fumoffu? What's the point then, seeing as Fumoffu is the bit people actually like?

Again, not every title is listed yet. We did state that it was UE only but have since revisited that policy given a bunch of reasons - like I say - we've been straightening things out based on consumer feedback this year :). Hopefully for the better but I'll get complaints whatever we do...

And the GL movies have now taught us that when Andrew uses the word exclusive in relation to disc content in an expensive ultimate edition, we should just wait it out and see if he changes his mind.

Again, where did I say it was exclusive content (genuinely asking in case I've written something else down that I need to apologise for)? Even as we announced the Gurren Lagann Standard Edition - I detailed how I would do the films if we did:

What I actually said:
WHY THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE BETWEEN ULTIMATE EDITION & STANDARD?
If you compare to Zavvi (which still is the lowest price point for the Ultimate that is still in stock) then there’s approx £50 difference in pricing there! So if the above didn’t make it clear already we figured we’d quantify a bit. If we released the movies separately they would each include one of the Parallel works releases too or as a double-pack. Either way you’d be looking at about the following real cost (i.e. Amazon/Zavvi price, not SRP) if you bought them separately:

Standard amaray edition(s): £20 – £30 of value
Collector’s edition(s) ala TB The Beginning: £30 – £50 of value

Add in a large-sized hardback art book and rigid box to store it all in and hopefully this helps contextualise somewhat for folks!

Source: Gurren Lagann – Standard Edition Blu-Ray – All the Anime

So we hit in between with an SRP of £24.99 (I get that value is a variable term but it was 2014 and we were overworked as a team of 3 so forgive me for being a bit vaguer sans Jeremy to loom over me + check what I said) and we released it exactly as I said we may. So I'm again really unsure how I have mislead anyone and I am pretty certain I never said it was going to be restricted to the UE forever (I always defer to the written notes though and we've definitely never said that on the blog...)

At the time though, it was exclusive and it remained that way for +2 years so if you wanted it then that was the best way. We're now correcting that for a chunk of titles and getting everything uniformed now :).

Best,

Andrew

Dandy S2 as a standalone gets my money. I was overjoyed to pick up the first season in the sale last year. And heartbroken to hear it's sold less than 500 copies.

It did well would you believe :)? I think people just really liked the Collector's Edition or mostly expected a complete BD down the line just ;_;.

AP
I bought the season 1 BD CE. But I'll probably go standard for season 2 given how there's barely any consistency between the season 1 and season 2 CE. I'm not a fan of toploading.

Well, at least that's good news! I grabbed the CEs myself but I'd have thought Space Dandy would have been a strong title to cross over and pick up an audience of people wanting to pay less. These things are so unpredictable :S

I guess knowing it would be split by season would have made a bunch of people sit and wait for the complete set as you say.

I still remember the rage from some fans when people started doing complete collections and the cost 'per volume' increased accordingly (even though the total cost of ownership was much, much lower, and the distributor's exposure much greater). You just cannot win.
