The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Viz partake in a bit of grave dancing in regards to scanlations whilst not really having a leg to stand on between Jump being a rag with only three series worth a solid damn and their sorely emaciated UK Digital line up.

So yeah. They're doing the sort of talk that gets one hit if you follow my saying.

The wrath of Warner Bros is upon us... maybe we should send them to Mars so they can suffer the fate of becoming a basketball.

Then again so should Kaze themselves.
I just wish it could have been paped out ahead of JoJo's so we'd not be looking at that possibly getting the can.

It's 69p. Even if you're only reading two series that isn't too bad. I'm currently reading three series in the magazine (or would be if the volume releases weren't so far behind) and there's a few others I've considered but aren't availabile digitally in the UK.

Technically it's not really their fault the UK digital line-up is bad, Viz Media Europe is an entirely different company and they use a UK imprint so blame Simon and Schuster...

I'm not paying 69p to download half a rag just to get 21 pages worth anything close to a damn and I can't get the digital version of Soma (Which I would do in a second, just so we're clear) because Viz have their head up their arse and they can't keep their international channels in line with the fist of god as they bloody well should.

I know where I stand with CR Manga; I have the series I want to follow pinned (UQ, Sins, FT, Tale of the Wedding Ring and Don't Say I Love you) and I go and read those every week. If I want to see what, perlexample, Unlimited Fafner is all about, I just look into CH1 of that and if I like it, fair play, I pin it. If not, all I lost was the small time it took to load.

With Jump, you're downloading Naoshi Komi's creative bankruptcy (Because one does NOT go from Double Arts to Nisekoi without having lost their artistic soul along the way), World Trigger, which is Training Arc: the comic book and Bleach, which sucks, every week and you're going to freaking well like it otherwise you're not getting those 14 pages that you actually like with scant appearances from Blue Exorcist and Seraph every four weeks ostensibly for good behaviour.

And then there's Platinum End.
Good FREAKING Lord is there ever that excuse at money digging.

So yeah, that's a Can of Irn Bru or a nice cold bottle of sparkling watter that I can have instead and I can enjoy the whole of that!

What the hell of kind of cheap bottled water are they selling in Scotland?

That said, putting Platinum End as a separate release instead of Weekly Shonen Jump is clearly a money grab, and is actually quite disgusting.

Those 500ml bottles of Tesco's Own Brand are pretty good and come in between 30 and 50p, S.Pellegrino is slightly more than a Jump Rag but is fantastic.

Hell, the worst bottled water I had was Lidl's Own Brand stuff which was just meh rather than wildly offensive.

So yeah, Sparkling Watter, better than a Jump Rag.

I'm honestly going to say I am not unhappy with Viz taking down the scanlations for JUMP. I am subbed to JUMP and I have been since it was available in the UK (so about two years now?), and have never been unhappy with the price I've paid for it. I don't read every series in it, but I read the majority and frankly would much rather have the official translations anyway.

I don't really think it's fair to be picky about spending less than £1 for a few series, I'd rather support the industry than have less of it because we didn't put a bit of money in now and again when Viz do good things. I think scans have a place, but quite honestly for the big series, which you have legal access to, it has been a long time coming for them being brought down.

I relied on scanlations for years, even after Jump became available legally here mainly due to two things.
1)Viz in their ultimate wisdom don't allow non NA subscribers to use their pc manga viewer, and
2)For some moronic reason Viz blocked the Jump app from larger form factor Android tablets, a block that was only removed when the Nexus 9 was released last year.

€2.21 per month isn't bad though for what you get, but over a year is still over half the price of a 12 month Cruncyroll subscription which you get a lot more for your money with, €26.52 vs €40.

Also, having to download the lot in one go as opposed to CR's model is a royal PITA that I am sick of.

Like I said, if I could just get The series I wanted via digital GN (or separately, as much as I want to put my fist in Roger Mellie's face for Platinum End, if they offered that for Hero Academia, Soma and the monthlies I'd pay top dollar to do so) then I would do that but no, ether I'm forced into getting half the value with all the encumbrance or buying physical which I do not want to do period.

Viz's site won't let you buy manga on a PC outside NA, but the Shonen Jump sub-site will.

Animatsu is dropping hints at an Himouto Umaru-Chan acquisition

and by hinting, I mean practically confirming.

I wonder if Himouto would do well here, I hope so. I'd say it's one of those shows with hidden depths, though I'd like to see them do even more with a second season.
