The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Not sure if Shirow ever explicitly confirmed it, but in the original manga, Batou was supposedly based on 'hot new action star' Steven Seagal, so kind of glad they didn't stick to that at least...

Apparently Danish actor Pilou Asbæk has been cast as Batou for the upcoming live-action GitS movie. More intriguingly, Variety also makes mention of the Laughing Man in their description of the film's plot, perhaps suggesting that they're looking to SAC for inspiration, rather than the manga or the Oshii films.

As it says in the article they are at least using the laughing man plotline from SAC, rather than trying to construct a whole new story.

I tend to find the quality varies on Arrow releases, if it's a film project, the release will be flat out AMAZING.

Some of the foreign TV shows they've released, less so. Their release of BRAQUO is a train wreck, there's spelling errors, the translation is inconsistent and the blasted subtitles were forced so I couldn't correct them. Arrow create (or commission) the film masters themselves, whereas for the TV shows they might be given the master by their licensor, so I don't think it was Arrow's fault, but it still pissed me off.

The anime studio Manglobe formally began bankruptcy proceedings with the Tokyo District Court on November 4. 237 parties are claiming 544.5 million yen (about US$4.43 million) in debt from the studio. Manglobe had shut down on September 29 and filed for bankruptcy that same day. Animators reported not receiving their final paychecks from the studio.

While there's obviously brand association, the team that work on the Arrow Video and Arrow Academy titles (so, the films as you say) aren't the same team that work on the TV series and standard Arrow Films releases. But I'd imagine that any anime that Arrow would be interested in would fall under the Video or Academy label, so be in very safe hands...

To be fair, Michael B (a freelancer for Arrow, who also posts on the blu-ray.com forums) seemed to think they'd probably been given by the master by Zodiak, the people who sell Braquo internationally. Arrow don't strike me as the company who'd burn subtitles in if they had the choice.

And the one or two film releases I have off Arrow are really good. (I only have Time Bandits and the Doctor Phibes Collector's Edition.)

Not sure what shows they'd release. I don't know exactly what kind of films they put out but the only films I've seen of theirs in stores are obscure 70s and 80s horror films.

They're a bit like a British Criterion, but way less pretentious in the films they choose. They' tend to focus on horror movies from what I've seen, but theyve also released stuff like Time Bandits and The Long Good Friday. Their film releases are also of excellent quality, so if you see any films you like you probably won't go wrong by picking them up. (Or you could do what I did with Doctor Phibes, and buy something that has an interesting cover, maybe you'll discover something you really like.)

Arrow Video know how to put out a quality release, (anyone here pick up their Hellraiser release? It's bloody beautiful, one of my favorite purchases) I'd be stoked if they got hold of some Anime but with saying that, I don't think there's a place (as they wrote). Any classic titles that would potentially do well in the UK would likely be licensed by Anime Limited who already have the connections.

Perhaps the best known release of theirs here would be Battle Royale. I would be very surprised to see them release any shows, but I could see them pick up something like Patlabor or Belladonna of Sadness. But it does sound like there's nothing on the cards at the moment.
