The final nail in Media Blasters' anime coffin? I thought QB was one of their better selling titles, and they said they were dubbing more of it.
Good. Live by the crappy titty anime, die by the crappy titty anime.

May they never darken my door again, I have a better man in Discoteck.
Is there any company that you actually don't want to die?
Discoteck, Kaze, Funimation That's about it. Seriously, they're just about the only companys that don't act like crap throwing monkies.

Depraved of a version that hasn't been pressed through the video conversion ringer, all because six twits can't operate a PS3...

They can't hide behind "Licenser say no" ether, that's bunk.

Edit: because here I am, playing Seto No Hanayome (Funimation's and NSTC all all get out) and it runs perfectly fine on my pal PS3. I can also confirm it's a pal PS3 cuz it doesn't play my copy of Xenogears.
I already went through the trouble of confirming with photographic evidence. You should see me in that twitter thread linked above confirming that it wasn't just a technical issue.
If a licensor says "no" to something then they can't do it. That's not bunk. If these are the same guys who think that locked subtitles are a useful deterrent to reverse importing then I can absolutely see them thinking R2 NTSC discs are a bad thing, since R2 PAL discs will not play on Japanese PS3 and possibly other hardware too.

Why would Japan insist anything of the sort? That doesn't make sense even by Japan's own batshit standards of insanity.

If that was the case, they'd be forcing Australia to use PAL and that's not the case.

Hell, it wouldn't even be their call to make if Manga's using Madman for their ISO creation.

Australia isn't region 2. We are, and so is Japan.

Actually this is potentially bad news for UK-only buyers in future, if the Australian companies start using NTSC for everything and Manga/MVM can no longer use their materials. Kaze do the conversions themselves I believe.

Honestly? The way this is sounding, it only sounds like Magna's utterly screwed. And, ignoring AOD, I'd be happy for Kazé to to be our defacto release company.

Mm, someone's going to be inconvenienced by it no matter what happens. I wonder whether the savings Australia gets from switching to NTSC will be blown by not being able to sell their materials to Manga any more, or whether we end up holding them back, as it were, and they stick to PAL after all. Maybe Kaze will end up wielding more power.

Personally I'd prefer to pay more and get unconverted NTSC rather than than the brutalised messes Manga releases all too often, but as I'm in a minority there, it's probably best they keep converting for the good of their preferred demographics.

Thing is, if MangaUK went up to the license holders in Japan and said "Can we release this in the United Kingdom in NTSC format instead of PAL?", the Japanese said no, but Manga went and did it anyway, that would put them in breach of contract which would be very bad news. It's a shitter that if our guesses are right, that the Japanese won't let them go ahead with it.

If Madman Entertainment and other Australian companies move entirely to NTSC (I've heard they're doing some NTSC releases, but what is the likelihood of a complete change?) then yeah, it will be very bad news for MangaUK and MVM. Sure, Kazé may do their own disc authoring, but don't they use MangaUK for distribution? So if we lose Manga, Kazé will have to find another UK distribution partner. I doubt we will lose Manga UK over it, but it will probably mean their releases will become more expensive and there will be fewer releases and higher sales needed...could see how that could finish them off though.

Honestly, I wish Manga would get bought out by Kaze and we just end this nonsense. Viz (being Shuiehsa and Shougakugan) would have a bigger platform to stand on and better faculties to use.

Maybe they can also put a certain PR person on a night course in PR.

Not really - I just think that with regard to that particular discussion, it's a good idea to look at things in the most general way possible.
Fair enough. :) As I said, I don't disagree with you in general.

What job do you do, btw?

Squid Girl is weird, I like it well enough (albeit not enough to put it in the same sentence as those others) but some of my friends have a crazy level of affection for it.
"Like it well enough" is a pretty good way of putting it, I think. It was one-and-a-half great characters and a great premise, let down slightly by the writing not being consistently funny. I can see why some people would absolutely love it based on either a) total devotion to Ika-chan or b) not having seen a bunch of funnier shows, but not much else.

Totally cool - I didn't take it that you did!

Seeing as you ask, I do a little bit of everything. But the stuff I get PAID for (regularly, at least) is lettering, believe it or not. (And yes, comic book letterers ARE artists in their own right. Very specialised artists, in fact.)

The majority of my clients tend to be small press outfits or independent publishers. Working closely with those guys, I'm quite well placed to hear about market trends, sales figures, what's hot and what's not... that sort of thing. Sometimes, the stuff you hear is quite surprising.

After fighting TVTokyo to keep the license, 4Kids are selling Yu-Gi-Oh! it?! With Saban as the stalking horse...

Oh dear...

Also, I wonder how FUNimation's partnership with NicoNico is doing...
It's not just YuGiOh that's geting sold. It's apprently most of 4Kids' assets including thier DBZ Kai airing rights (Of which includes streaming apprently, Funi/Nick had to pay them for it).

I'd easly watch Saban One Piece more than any 4Kids of the same.

I never knew 4Kids had any rights relating to DBZ Kai.

The Terrestrial Digital rights to air it in the US.
