Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but do you mean to say that you think Kiki sold badly (relatively speaking)? I think it would be interesting to see which Ghibli films have sold the best. Presumably Spirited Away is top and I could imagine Totoro being second but I wonder what it's like after that.

Not that it sold particularly badly... Just that there would be quite a few that we don't have as steelbooks (and have not been announced) that sold more...

I'm shocked to see Grave of the Fireflies sell so substantially lower than the other films in Japan. I suppose it's tearjerking realism might not be suited to the Blu-Ray buying market.

The political climate in Japan at the moment is more than a little tense, with regards to their involvement (or lack of involvement) in wars. Maybe it's just not the right time for Grave of the Fireflies to receive a big push.

It's also, to my very limited knowledge, the only Ghibli film to get a 12 in the UK is not? Perhaps, it's simply not benefiting for the children and family market.

Some more Japanese sales data that I've collected. Hopefully people find them interesting. Most of it is Ghibli but the Miscellaneous section at the end is also interesting. This is only a sample of the numbers I have on hand. If anyone has any requests for titles they want numbers for, let me know and I'll see what I can dig up. All data is ordered from best selling to worst. Tracking of sales is not 100%, keep that in mind. LTD = Life to Date. :

My copy of Spirited Away is 12 rated, not sure if that's because of the extras tho as I remember it being a PG.

I doubt the political climate has much to do with it to be honest - it's a classic, rather than a new film, so it shouldn't need a marketing push. In fsct, discussion of Japan's military and constitution could well boost sales rather than dampen them.

True, it's rated 12 here, but let's not forget that it was originally shown in cinemas as a double bill with Totoro...

Has there been a Ghibli simulwatch before?

Sure enough, i have something of  WHAT, to see that women like gangsta and rampo so much but no sign of it in the men's top ten.

Surely this should be evident enough just by looking at the avatars on the forum?

Obviously there are some exceptions to this rule, such as Danielle and Professor Irony, but for the majority of us, the females have male characters in their avatars and males have female characters in their avatars.

Apologies for quoting such an old conversation, but I'm still catching up on all the topics I missed when I was away....

I never did understand why so many people pay attention to the numbers on the Studio Ghibli DVDs/BDs, they have so little meaning that they might as well be random numbers. I just keep mine in the order the films were made and leave it at that.

No, the numbering doesn't bother me either. Doesn't with the Disney blus either. One of the reasons I like the steels, no numbers anyway.

Like the Disney films again though, I just hope that eventually they ALL get a UK release.

And Ufotable's GOD EATER gets bumped again. At this point they're probably having to rewrite later episodes or the finale will get bumped to later in the year.

It's a real shame, from the two episodes I've seen, the show's not brilliant, but it has potential and being ufotable it looks good. I was personally hoping the show would be able to solve it's writing issues this season and then hopefully we'd get another season once it had sorted itself out. I'm guessing that's not going to happen, but at least ufotable will have learnt from the experience.

Are those extra episodes actual extra episodes or are they just recaps or something to buy more time to work on the episodes?

I saw about 30 seconds of one, it's people talking for 30 minutes. It was clearly done last minute so they'd actually be able to fill their airtime and not piss the networks off.

Weirdly, the episodes themselves do actually look quite good, so I'm wondering if the show's not actually that far behind schedule, and ufotable are being overly fussy.

I see. It is quite worrying that they have to do it so often. I was going to pick up the show this season but I didn't get around to it. By the sounds of it, it looks like I made a good choice. Delays like that so often would infuriate me to no end. I think I'd still like to watch it but I'll just wait until it's done so I can skip all the extra episodes.

I don't know, the second extra episode (titled Extra 01 just to confuse you) seemed to have been scheduled in advance, as I didn't see any reports that they'd replaced a delayed episode with it. Nobody seemed surprised by it either. Perhaps the reason the first bonus episode was titled Extra 00 is because they knew the second one (Extra 01) was coming?

Either way, I'd wait and see if it gets a proper conclusion first, because I think we're heading for Blood Blockade Battlefront-type situation where the finale gets pulled indefinitely.
