The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I took a screenshot of that tweet just in case it ends up getting removed:

I'd prefer it 16:9 myself (assuming it's stretched, not cropped) but it's really scummy that they would do something like that. What was the point of having a poll at all? Just as a scapegoat?

It's to make you feel like you had some input in the product.

What that tweet doesn't say is how close it was, if it was close, it's possible FUNi decided that the sales data would be of more importance. Also, that survey likely only took into account hardcore fans of the show, would casual fans be willing to accept a 4:3 BD? I see why FUNi did it, but they could have perhaps sugar-coated their lie a little.

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest - DBZ is arguably the most popular 'casual fans' series out there, and they'd take one look at 4:3 and think it looked crummy and old and probably not buy any more of it.

Personally, I'll always prefer to have the choice - if you have it in 4:3 it's easy enough to just zoom in with your TV remote if you want to watch it widescreen, even if you do miss a little off the bottom and top.

Studio Canal are likely hoping to fill the gap the loss of Studio Ghibli titles will leave in their releases.

Really looking forward to this film.

I wonder if they'd consider releasing more Non Ghibli stuff? I know they did Vampire Hunger D Bloodlust in the past. There's a few Satoshi Kon films crying out for Blu-Rays.

It would be nice if they'd get Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves out on Blu-ray (are there any others missing?).

I wondered if Anime Limited would get The Boy and The Beast, it seems like it might be their kind of thing. It's reasonably likely that I'll give it a go anyway.

I wonder if it'll end up on TV at some point like the Ghibli films. I've no idea if Studio Canal is involved in that aspect at all or if it's all different licenses.

I believe C4 has a deal to show all of Studiocanal's films.

I'd be surprised if Studiocanal go after anything old, they have a huge catalogue of their own films to release, without acquiring old anime from somebody else.

Viewster have announced a premium service for their streaming website 'OMAKASE' which includes ad-free and HD streams for new and existing titles (to ones that they have access to).

It's starting this winter but it's not confirmed if this is worldwide or US exclusive.

Considering how much I've been asking for them to announce something like that recently, I could not be less whelmed by the way that announcement has come out if I tried.
