The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Do you remember them talking about a potential 'club Manga' or some kind of subscription deal? That sounded quite interesting.

My first response to this is, Manga have their own online shop??

So yes they have failed, their shop needs to be like MvM's
The Manga online shop was actually run by MVM last I checked...

Well if I don't know their shop exists it's a given I'd not know it was run by MvM.

In any event I was referring to the way MvM ship their stuff earlier because by default they have stock first, there needs to be an incentive to shop there.

FUNimation have announced, the day before release, that their Senran Kagura DVD/BD combi-pack doesn't include the 6 OVAs that it was advertised as having for quite some time.

What, the, Hell?!?

Did the one sane person at Funimation leave a while back because they have had a string of stupid mistakes this year that is making me question if I should pick up any of their releases.

Some people have noticed that FUNi losing Charlene Ingram (brand manager) to Viz correlated with FUNimation's overall quality taking a nosedive (and meanwhile, Viz have suddenly started doing a lot of things right). That sucks for people who already ordered the set.

I wasn't 100% serious about that one person thing but maybe there is something to it, and I'm one of those that already ordered the set. :|

I just found it funny that the exact same thing happened to have been debated quite seriously :D

I don't really know Charlene (keeping tabs on US anime staff isn't a hobby of mine) but I have to say that the announcement interviews she gave for Viz's Sailor Moon acquisition got me champing at the bit to buy it - even though I already own it! That's the kind of infectious enthusiasm I want to see from the people trying to sell me stuff :D

Okay, somewhat postponed reply to Andrew and the crowd... Full Metal Panic, the value of combopacks and the SRP of Kill La Kill. Let's roll.

In general, people who are curious about what the Japanese booklet of FMP holds, this blog has a little preview.
anime_andrew said:
FMP disc count -> Yep it'd be 8, not 10 but really depends on extras. The Japanese set was 10 so I like to be cautious. 8 is still 2 more BD50s than the Gurren Lagann Ultimate though.
Understandable.

anime_andrew said:
Price for FMP -> £129.99 would have been the SRP - so you'd be looking at £84.99 or so average price probably via retail (hard to really estimate though).
Oh, that changes a lot! The clarification really makes a huge difference!
Fifty episodes, rigid packaging and a 50-page booklet for £85 feels like great value for money. Just like Durarara!! ^_^

I'd be a bit at the mercy of the exchange rate to Euro in and at that time, as that hasn't worked in my favor the last few months, but still...
And I'd be at the mercy of the other releases in the same timeframe, but unlike TTGL I have no doubts about which version I want with that content vs price (if it stays like that).

Also we'd be re-digitising the Japanese HD masters - so the quality would differ to the Funimation ones (based on reports anyway, I could again be mistaken). So it's hard to estimate what the impact is as the two products also target different demographics - collectors for Anime Ltd vs standard editions from Funimation (both have merits).
Kadokawa: 1080i. Funimation: 1080p.
I'm so happy you guys have proven to be capable to author both! (otherwise I'd be seriously worried)

Guesswork has its perils, but given your great reputation and the ability to stay true to the customers gives you a clear advantage.
Especially with such a small price difference between the supposedly inferior Funimation release and superior Anime Ltd release.

anime_andrew said:
Interesting point too if you do maths on the SRPs is if we worked on the standard runtime + discs vs price - we'd be looking at > £130 for standard editions of each (if you assume £29.99/34.99 for half series like FUMOFFU and TSR and £59.99 for first season). So you actually probably make a better saving with one ultimate AND better materials too actually...

(...) Single editions are still possible but often off the back of the success of an Ultimate actually.
Thinking about it it'd (indeed) not be worth doing standard editions. It all would end up being cheaper going for the Ultimate Edition.

List it far enough ahead, be open from the get-go on Facebook/Twitter about the aspects and all will be fine.
Perhaps look into the possibility that IF the Ultimate Edition sells out to release a new complete collection without booklet and cheaper packaging at a lower SRP.
But I don't think it'd be a great plan to only release 2 out of 3 seasons as a separate regular edition down the line. (that's at least my opinion)

anime_andrew said:
Format for FMP-> While a good idea - the issue is it gets complicated when you do that kind of differentiation.
I must be honest this sentence confused me because it'd - in my point of view - make things easier for everybody, not more complicated.
But as indicated earlier in this post I do believe, given the clarification on the SRP, that my idea wouldn't be a good one to use with Full Metal Panic.
Perhaps another Anime Ltd release will be able to use my idea though (hopefully?).

Also if you're going to do a premium product the last thing that makes sense is to use Amaray cases, even if Japan uses them. May well look at other options than Digi's though as I know not everyone is keen on them though! So let's see what comes out of that too :).
I've seen enough premium/collector's editions with Amaray cases in and outside anime. I don't mind it too much. It all hinges on how the complete set is handled.
However, do with the packaging as what makes sense to you or as to what's the most viable. I have faith it'll turn out great.

Just offering my viewpoint as 'Consumer X' here. I'm very much the meat-and-potatoes kind of anime fan. So long as I've got a show on nice, shiny discs and a box to put them in, I'm happy.
I appreciate that view too - it's a sucky answer on my part but we will cater to that too as soon as we're able to - but it does mean a wait into 2015 though when this run is done. I always feel like an ogre saying it though - the other option is to try and clear a DVD collection complete at the end of the release maybe, but I can see us getting that knocked back too just due to general world-strategies on it.
I really don't believe all that much in the value of combopacks for series.

It's a bit hard to put it into words why I believe that a combopack seems useless, but some arguments I have against it are:
1 - I don't believe people really need to watch anime on a road trip, when they go to family/friends or something similar. (unless that's the trip's purpose)
2 - If the purpose of the trip is watching anime and I need a Blu-ray player: I'd just take my own if I knew it was safe. It'd be a waste of the BD otherwise..
3 - It would really be a waste of the Blu-ray to watch the DVDs...
4 - I would for the love of Kyubey not even risk taking a collector's edition with me on holiday. Recipe for disaster!
5 - If you need to watch something on the road trip or holiday: I suppose you own something on DVD or have a Blu-ray player in your laptop. (alternatives available)
6 - This one targets Kill La Kill mostly: it's available on Wakanim and Netflix. (just download it ahead of or during the trip)
7 - Also targeting Kill La Kill: I don't think I would want to watch it somewhere else than my "man cave". (see "2" for if I were to make it an exception)
8 - If you need a frisbee on a road trip... either buy a real one, use a crappy non-Anime Ltd release or play a different game.

Okay, okay... people who don't have a Blu-ray player and can't afford one have a problem...
But if you can afford paying the Kill la Kill CE and not a Blu-ray player I'm questioning logic because Blu-ray players aren't all that expensive anymore.
And in the case there isn't a cheap one available now I'm pretty sure there'll be one by the time Kill La Kill volume 1 to 3 are out in the UK.

However, I think I made it clear I'm in favor of a separate DVD collection down the road. Perhaps promote Wakanim/Netflix a bit for those people in the meanwhile.

If we're very very careful we maybe could do it at SRP: £59.99, SRP £49.99 and SRP £59.99 (a rigid box to hold 3 x rigid boxes is pretty extreme cost wise as you can imagine...
It'd be pushing the limits for me at those SRPs, but none go over my monthly threshold... Tough decisions!
Can't wait to see a complete confirmation on the model at the end of August. I have a slight hope some stuff will change in my favor, but yeah...
Either way, I have no doubts about having a few Anime Ltd titles on my "to acquire"-list this fall. There're enough Anime Ltd titles I want to acquire! ^_^

Insomni-posting again to directly reply to Andrew.

Cheers for being a real gent about your responses, first and foremost. It's great to be able to have this kind of dialogue with someone who's in the business of making anime available to us all.

This is one of those instances where I sort of think 'just gimme the show!'

I appreciate that these are neat extras, and represent a nice gesture toward fans. But, speaking solely for myelf here, they're things I wouldn't be overly bothered about. Even as a working designer / comic book guy, things like bundled art books / booklets don't hold a lot of appeal for me.

Just offering my viewpoint as 'Consumer X' here. I'm very much the meat-and-potatoes kind of anime fan. So long as I've got a show on nice, shiny discs and a box to put them in, I'm happy.

Lemme see though - I do hear you and I know there is a market on that front.

Nothing sucky about this - and nothing to feel like an ogre about, either!

Bottom line, you're dealing in a commodity that is NOTORIUSLY problematic to provide to people in a manner everyone is happy with. What Anime Limited is doing is laudable, and I'm well aware that my personal viewpoint isn't necessarily the norm - at least on this board. You have some great material lined up, and I'm itching to support you guys whenever I can.

Watching with interest!
