^^ Puchimas!! Petit Petit iDOLM@STER ranked 164 on DVD, in between rank 139 and 245, which sold 289 and 180 respectively.
109 BDs were further added for GJ-bu@ in the period from May 19~June 9.
^^ Blade & Soul ranked 209 on DVD, in between rank 129 and 254, which sold 379 and 196 respectively.
^^ Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin ranked 130 on DVD, in between rank 129 and 254, which sold 379 and 196 respectively.

Well, IIRC 700 copies in a few months was enough to sink the original blu-ray release of Fullmetal Alchemist. The cost of the license makes a huge difference so there is no set figure.

--edit--

..which also makes the "Manabi Line" something of a myth. A show can have poor Japanese sales but still be a 'success' if it leads to a spike in manga sales for example.

Speaking of sales figures, it's a shame All The Anime don't do those blog posts any more every month looking at the Top 10 of the month's new releases. Obviously they weren't permitted to shed any light on exact numbers per title, but at least there was a bit of analysis as opposed to the 'vanilla' charts we get in NEO mag.

Yeah I'm well aware of that. I remember reading a post about how Nichijou most likely made money despite the Individual volumes selling terribly. Merch and Boxsets can make more money than the entire Volume run.
It's just sad to see a show I really enjoyed not do too well in Home Video numbers. Seems to be a running thing for me. Golden Time also didn't do amazingly on home video either.

Regarding that Fairy Tail question ..I wonder what constitutes as a "flop" "so so" & "hit" with Manga, sales wise.
I'd imagine:
Flop - Doesn't make back it's advance and loses money.
So So - Sells decently - enough to break even and/or make a profit.
Hit - Sells enough for Manga to get a small swimming pool full of cash.

I find that aswell, I really enjoy a show, only to find it bombed in Japan killing all possibility of more.

It also occurs to me that when we talked about Anime pricing we never did look beyond that into the multi spectrum of goods on offer when an Anime hits the shelves (though this is not the place to reopen that topic)

Imagines paddling pool full of £10's in Jeromes office

If you want to look over data for Japanese sales figures (sources in English):

Bluray and DVD/CD/Manga/LN sales:
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=737625 (easy to navigate, data back to December last year, very little analysis, data usually posted faster here than any other english language source)

Details and data on Bluray and DVD sales:
http://www.someanithing.com/ (data stretches back as far as there is data available, with weekly data back to 2009. Very limited data as far back as the 1970s. Lots of Analysis)

DVD and Bluray sales estimates/release dates:
http://rederoin.motionsforum.com/

Every week's sales rankings as reported in MAL's news threads for manga and LN sales (NOTE: MAL's light novel sales lists have at times been very incomplete)
manga: http://animetics.net/2008-2013-weekly-m ... es-charts/
light novels: http://animetics.net/2009-2013-weekly-l ... es-charts/
(no analysis on the above links but some in blogs on the site, data updated very infrequently)

LN anime airing sales boosts from re-ranking of past volumes:
http://forums.lndb.info/showthread.php?tid=26300
All time bestselling light novel volumes (deliberately using a very liberal definition of what is a light novel):
http://forums.lndb.info/showthread.php?tid=54

Remember that store exclusives also help sell titles in Japan (they can watch the show when it's airing so it's the collectors who actually buy stuff) and when a store exclusive is at a location that doesn't report its sales to Oricon...we'll never know how well that title did. Obviously this only affects niche shows since Love Live is indisputably the king right now no matter where most people are buying it ^^;;

Really good news about Funi potentially listening to people on Attack on Titan. I want a box to keep my LEs together and I'm not willing to spend a fortune smuggling the exclusive edition in through a third party.

Andrew has said a few times it'd be coming back "soon"... I hope he'll be sharing info about previous months and a review of sales in 2013, even though we're halfway 2014..
And personally I'm also interested in a breakdown how titles are performing from the Anime Ltd catalog, and what's being noticed in Blu-ray sales for all distributors.
I'll have to be patient, I know... But Andrew, if you're around.. Any idea when you'll have time for more sales charts?
I said in the past I don't mind waiting, and being patient. I'm just worried we won't get data for November 2013 up til now..

Hmmmm.... I do want to watch The Kawai Complex Guide, Black Bullet, Beyond the Boundary, and am not as excited for the more popular ones.. Have I hit my head?!
No, of course not... If it comes to Monogatari I'm waiting for collection boxes (and the riddance of the disc count logo).
Alright, Kill la Kill is also of interest.. I just need to somehow afford the UK release if I want to watch it. XD

(Yeah, Tiger & Bunny is still on the fence. Love Live haven't I considered yet.)

Looks like the Funimation Exclusive set of Attack on Titan can be bought on RACS. Question is whether they ship to the UK/Europe. It also makes me wonder whether UP1 and Rightstuf can get the set since it kind of suggests that it flopped on Funimation's site.
Yeah, why else would they submit it to other retailers..
I wouldn't be surprised the idea behind it was making their own site more popular..

NormanicGrav said:
@MangaUK Any interest from you guys in picking up the newly announced Psycho Pass Extended Edition of Season 1?

Manga Entertainment I don't double dip.
*sigh* Pardon my language, but this sµcks big time.

I have been on the fence about the current (upcoming for UK) Blu-rays for multiple reasons, so it saddens me somewhat to read that...
I'm leaving this title on the fence for now if it comes to supporting the UK BD release. Maybe at a sale. Maybe.

Also, "I don't double dip"? I vaguely remember there being a few titles Manga has or Manga has been interested in that'd essentially be double dips.

*sigh* It's funny how this demotivates me to watch things like Ghost in the Shell, because it bugs me I don't own Clannad on BD. >_<

NormanicGrav said:
Hey @MangaUK , you lot released Season 1 of Squid Girl, any plans for the second season yet?

Manga Entertainment No. Sorry.
*insert rant here about Media Blasters being about as bad as Kaze* (My hope is also with Sentai)

NormanicGrav said:
@MangaUK Is Fairy Tale a big hit in the UK?

Manga Entertainment So-so.
Good. That means I can wait for the collections to get this anime. =P
I wouldn't mind if Manga would release the guild collections Madman is planning to release with 48 episodes per box.
That is assuming both Manga and Madman will be allowed to do Blu-ray releases for them.

Emulsion said:
Apparently Madman's release of Kill la Kill is going to be 5 volumes. Was posted here yesterday.

So I wonder if their release is basically going to be a port of AoA's discs. Same way Blue Exorcist is.
Most likely. Unless Anime Limited are planning to do 5 discs split over 3 volumes.

Fairy Tail: Phoenix Priestess is available on Amazon Instant:
@MangaUK Why does amazon instant video have the fairy tail movie?

Manga Entertainment Because we put it on there.
Seems this raised up some kind of trial thing.

@Thedoctor2016 In response to your serious question. The market dictates how we should distribute our titles. Some customers want VOD only.
@Thedoctor2016 Some want finished packaged goods and some want download to own or download to rent.
@Thedoctor2016 Will putting #FairyTailMovie on @AmazonVideoUK harm our DVD sales? I don't think so. My POV is that VOD is more like a TV
@Thedoctor2016 platform and as you are well aware. Considering there is zero TV coverage of anime in the UK, we may as well see where VOD
@Thedoctor2016 ...can take us.
https://twitter.com/Thedoctor2016/statu ... 5573808129

This is where I think Animax and Manga should work together on some sort of cross promotion with each other.

When I first heard that Sony was going to be showing anime I assumed they'd all jump on the chance to put an advert at the end of the credits or at least promote the hell out of it on social media. Nope, nothing.

Manga UK's Podcast is coming soon and they're doing another #AskMangaUK on Twitter. You've got until 12pm to ask them a question on Twitter.

Personally the last few only had a few questions answered but I guess that's because the others were either 'already answered' or the usual 'Nothing to confirm'. I can't think of any questions to ask, the last one I asked was about adding Blu-ray versions to their catalog titles a year ago.

download to rent
Does ANYBODY seriously do this? It seems like the most pointless thing in the world. I understand subscribing to streaming sites for a monthly fee, I understand buying a digital copy, but paying (usually around half the cost of download to own) to download something to your computer just to watch it once? It seems like a very expensive way of watching things. Especially if you decide you'd like to see it a second time.

It's a useful option for the bandwidth crippled.

I have in the past (not for anime though) - it only really works for films, not episodic TV (the difference in price is too small per episode)

It's more a mass market thing. If I'm casually flicking through and fancy checking out the new Tom Cruise movie that's just come out (and that I know I'll probably only watch once), I'd rather pay only 3 quid to watch it than the full 10 to buy the digital copy.

Many new releases won't appear on subscription services like Netflix for anything up to a year or two after their initial release - and in that window, if someone wants a digital copy, buying or renting is the only way.

As streaming services become more mainstream - and eventually replace DVDs as the mass market way of consuming new (as in, just come out in the past few weeks) content, we'll see the pay to rent/own digital model become the norm.

It's Jerome here. I've just signed a contract for a pretty big release. We will tell you about it @MCMExpo #Manchester on Saturday 20-July.

Since the JoJo anime wasn't announced at Anime Expo (despite a dub created for Stardust Crusader's first few episodes), I'll be amused to how they're going to handle it if it turns out to be JoJo.

If I was a betting man, I'd go with it being Jo Jo's though; it's one of the buzziest shows of the moment so to not cash in on that now would be silly. Seems too early for it to be a Sailor Moon announcement, and the Madoka movies issue has already been gone over at length.

I asked about the third season of The World God Only Knows and got a definitive 'no'. It's nice when Jerome answers tweets because you usually get a straight answer (no offense Jeremy). The first two seasons didn't sell well apparently. At least I know to just go ahead and buy the US or Aus release, assuming someone picks up the license.

Just a heads up some minor issues on the Season 1 Blu-ray. Source and Source, there's also mention of defective audio on Episode 12 but some people say otherwise.

Meanwhile:
@MangaUK #AskMangaUK do you think more retail stores willstock anime and manga now that its become popular like it was in the early 2000's

Manga UK We'll definitely cover this one in the podcast. @JeremyG__

@MangaUK @jeremyg__ awesome thanks guys! Podcast on itunes or podcast on youtube?

Jeremy Graves No problem. All going well, will be on iTunes by the weekend, failing that the start of next week.

Manga UK won't license the Extended Edition of Psycho Pass:
@MangaUK Any interest from you guys in picking up the newly announced Psycho Pass Extended Edition of Season 1?

Manga Entertainment I don't double dip.

From a business perspective it must be really annoying when you've got a release a fair way into production and then the Japanese announce something better and which will prompt your customers to demand the better version and ignore the one you haven't even released yet. The downgrade to a complete (higher priced) set suggests they don't expect many casual purchases for this one. Did that occur before the Extended Edition was announced or after?
